West Memphis, Arkansas (06/22/13) – The COMP Cams Super Dirt Series (CCSDS) Super Late Models rolled into Riverside International Speedway (West Memphis, Arkansas) on Saturday night for a $2,000-to-win event, and it was Ross Camponovo, who survived a last lap thriller to score his second series win in as many nights.

Fresh on the heels of his first career CCSDS victory on Friday night at Camden Speedway (Camden, Tennessee) on Friday night, Ross Camponovo from Clarksdale, Mississippi started his outing on Saturday night by setting fast time at the 1/4 mile bullring. He then proceeded to win the first heat race to lock into the pole position for the 35 lap finale with Jon Kirby joining him on the front row.

The initial green flag was quickly replaced with a red flag in the first corner, when Robert Baker tagged an infield tire, which caused him to spin up the track. Several competitors were collected, which resulted in a blocked track. Baker along with all of the competitors, who were involved were able to continue as the field lined up for a complete restart.
When the green flag flew again it was Camponovo, who bolted to the lead as Kirby, Ashley Newman, Joseph Long, and Chandler Petty gave chase. Lap 5 found the leaders already in heavy lapped traffic as Kirby caught leader, Camponovo. Over the next ten laps Camponovo maintained a narrow advantage as the leaders endured insane lapped traffic, which battled three and four wide.

Lap 15 saw the event’s second caution flag be displayed, when Kyle Beard, who led the points entering the event, stopped in turn four with nose damage. After some body work by series’ officials he was able to rejoin the tail of the field. At the time of the caution Camponovo continued to lead the way and was followed in the running order by Kirby, Newman, Petty, and Baker.

After one more caution flag on lap 16, the race set up for a nineteen lap dash to the checkers. As the race approached it’s closing laps Camponovo held a comfortable advantage over Kirby and Newman. However, with just five laps remaining Newman moved into second and quickly erased a straight away lead by Camponovo. As the leaders took the white flag Newman bolted to the inside of Camponovo and took the lead down the backstretch as the crowd came to its feet in anticipation of a thrilling finish. Entering turns three and four for the final time the lead duo was side-by-side, and Camponovo used a strong run on the cushion exiting turn four to score the victory by a few feet over Newman. Jon Kirby, Robert Baker, and Jeff Floyd rounded out the top five finishers.

The Larry Shaw Race Cars Hard Charger $100 bonus was claimed by Jeff Floyd, who raced from thirteenth to eighth, while Allen Murray was awarded the Quarter Master Hard Luck Award after mechanical woes after time trials forced him to scratch from the balance of the program.

Heat race action found Ross Camponovo getting the victory in GRT Race Cars Heat Race #1 with Jon Kirby winning the NEA Super Gas Heat Race #2. Allen Manufacturing Heat Race #3 was topped by Joseph Long.
