AMARILLO, Texas (June 22) – Stormy Scott bested 52 other USMTS Modifieds in front of a standing-room-only crowd Saturday night at the Route 66 Motor Speedway to earn his fourth win of the season on opening night of the 4s Motorsports Southern Speedweek powered by Lecolift.

Although he led all 40 laps of the main event, his pursuers kept him in their sights and the action behind him was heated.

After an early-race battle with Randy Timms and Daniel Hilsabeck, Thomas Tillison Jr. settled into second place and chased Scott around Bill Worthen’s popular 3/8-mile clay oval in Amarillo, Texas.

With ten laps to go, the drama level rose a few notches when Jason Hughes made contact with Timms while the duo raced for the fifth position. The ensuing melee collected several others and forced officials to wave the red flag.

The result was the end of the night for six competitors including Timms, Hughes, Chris Brown, Joe Adams, Chris Dawson and Hilsabeck.

Back under green, Johnny Scott wrestled second place away from Tillison and then set his sights on his older twin brother.

Time ran out, however, and Stormy Scott crossed the finish line three car lengths ahead of Johnny Scott as the pair scored their second one-two finish of the season. Johnny Scott was the one in from the previous occasion.

The win was worth $4,000 to the 23-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M. It was his 13th career USMTS victory in a little more than two seasons racing with the series.

Tillison held on for a third-place paycheck while Dereck Ramirez turned a 16th-place start into a fourth-place finish ahead of local favorite Jeremy Gossett who started and finished fifth.

Zack VanderBeek scored the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award in coming from 22nd on the 27-car starting grid to finish sixth. Seventh was Rick Beebe, eight went to 21st-starting Tristan Dycus, 18th-starting Clyde Dunn Jr. was ninth and Kelly Shryock rounded out the top 10 after using a provisional to start 25th.

With his runner-up finish, Johnny Scott moved into the points lead of the Allgayer, Inc. Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports while Rodney Sanders slipped to second. Six more events in the next seven days will determine the regional champion and see the first group of drivers become eligible for this year’s Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup that begins Aug. 8.

The 4s Motorsports Southern Speedweek powered by Lecolift will continue on Sunday, June 23, at the Elk City Speedway in Elk City, Okla. Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstand gates open at 5:00, hot laps start at 6:00 and racing is slated for a 6:30 start time.

The Elk City Speedway is a 3/8-mile semi-banked clay oval located off of I-40 at Merrit Rd. (exit 34), then 0.5 mile north, then 0.5 mile west. For race and ticket information call 580-799-7572.

Action rolls on with the first ever visit to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, on Tuesday, June 25. On Wednesday, June 26, it’s on to the Heart O’ Texas Speedway near Waco, Texas, then back to the north for three nights to finish up on Thursday-Saturday, June 27-29, with repeat visits to the Kennedale (Texas) Speedway Park, RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, and Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.
