Vance Wilson of Quincy, Illinois, added his second and third Lucas Cattle Company ULMA victories of the 2013 season at Callaway Raceway and Randolph County Raceway last weekend and in the process continued a hot streak of seven-consecutive top-three finishes dating back to mid May.

Wilson’s winning ways began Friday at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri; however, it wasn’t an easy task for the 2010 ULMA Champion driving his Finish Line Auto Sales, Tony Dunker Advanced Trading, Big River Auto Sales-sponsored MasterSbilt #B1 into victory lane.

The night’s action began with three preliminary qualifying races among the 14 drivers on hand. Larry Winn claimed the first heat race from the outside poll position; Jason Russell drove to the win in heat two from his outside row one starting spot, and in heat three, Justin Russell picked up the win from outside of row one.

Over the years at Callaway Raceway several main-event finishes have come right down to the wire and this night was another example of the close racing the track. Without question the late model drivers put on the best race of the night for the large crowd in attendance as just two cautions slowed the pace for the 20-lap main event.

It was an all Russell Brothers front row as Justin and Jason Russell led the field to the initial green flag. Although the Brothers Russell paced the initial stages of the race, many onlookers had their eyes on eighth-starting Wilson and tenth-starting and leading Rookie of the Year candidate Payton Looney, as they both charged through the field into the top five.

By mid-race, it looked like another Rookie of the Year contender; Earl Roark of Henley, Missouri might be the man to beat as he passed Jason Russell for the lead on the low side just before one of the caution periods. However; on the restart, the field was once again shuffled around in the ensuing laps as Wilson and Looney continued their forward momentum to the front.

At the line, Wilson edged Looney by less than a fender in the closest ULMA finish of the year. Jason Russell continued his streak of solid finishes by coming away with third place while younger Brother Justin claimed the fourth spot in one of his better outings this season. Chris Cox had a strong run in fifth spot followed by Roark, Winn, Chris Lapp, Zeke Langley, and Todd McCoin to round out the top ten.

Racing resumes Friday night at Callaway Raceways as the track hosts another weekly racing program. The track is currently experiencing website troubles; however, information is available by contacting track owner and promoter Betty Atterberry at (573) 220-1751.

Racing at Randolph County Raceway (RCR) in Moberly, Missouri, took place on Saturday evening as 16 drivers made their way to the high-banked facility for a pair of heat races and 20-lap main event. Vance Wilson began his night trying to pick up where he left off Friday evening as he came from sixth on the starting grid to claim the victory in heat race number one over early race leader Tommy Cordray of Browning, Missouri. Outside row one starter Bobby Penney of Lawson, Missouri dominated the second heat race with an easy win over third-starting Jon Binning of Warrensburg, Missouri and seventh-starting Jason Russell.

Wilson and Penney started the main event side-by-side at the front to pace the initial laps; however, it was Wilson who shot off to an early lead leaving Penney to battle with Russell and Binning. Penney’s chance for his first-ever win faded when he made contact with the backstretch wall. Shortly after Penney’s demise, caution flew over the field for the first time on lap three for a single-car spin by Steve Dieckmann.

When racing resumed, great battles ensued behind Wilson, who began stretching out his lead over the rest of the field. Ben Ballard and Tommy Cordray raced hard in their bid to crack the top five while Russell and Binning continued their tussle to move into the runner-up position along with previous RCR winner Kenny Mudd, as he made his way to the front of the field.

Darren Turner experienced a hard crash into the turn one concrete and although a bit shaken, was otherwise okay after the lap 11 incident. Wilson led Russell, Binning, Mudd, and a fast-moving Jon Melloway on the next restart. Another five laps were contested with close battles throughout the field including Melloway’s charge into the top three. Binning’s hope for a podium finish came to an end when a piece of debris came into his car and kicked it out of gear coming down the front stretch.

At the start of lap 17, Melloway sat comfortably in third position but became the latest front runner to suffer mechanical woes as he exited the speedway with three laps remaining shortly after a single-car spin by Dalton Imhoff brought out the final caution flag of the race.

For the final dash to the finish, Wilson again drove away from his closest pursuer, Jason Russell in second and multi-grooved running Tommy Cordray, who now occupied third. In the end, no one had anything for Wilson has he scored his second-consecutive victory in as many nights and second in a row at RCR. Russell came away in second with Cordray third, Mudd fourth, and eleventh-starting Larry Winn in fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Binning, Zeke Langley, Imhoff, Cliff Powell, and Dave Miller.

ULMA competitors have the week off from competition at RCR this coming Saturday but will return to action on the fast high banks of the track Saturday, July 6. To learn more about RCR point your web browser to the track’s website at www.randolphcountyraceway.com.
