For Immediate Release—

Sunday night racing at Double X Speedway in California has provided excitement for racing fans for over 20 years and last Sunday night proved why. Fans were treated to exciting feature events in all four divisions that were in competition.

Headlining the night were the visiting cars and drivers of the United Late Model Racing Association (ULMA). The heat races showed fans and drivers how quick these cars can get around the ¼ mile track. In the first heat, Todd McCoin of Barnett claimed the victory over Vance Wilson, Earl Roark, Justin Russell, Chris Cox and Kevin Coyne. The second heat race saw top ULMA rookie contender Bobby Penney claim the victory over Brandon Imhoff, Matt Sosebee, Greg Clemons and James Rutledge. This set the stage for an exciting and eventful 20 lap feature event.

The ULMA main was led to the green flag by McCoin and Penney. Todd McCoin jumped in to the lead and opened a comfortable lead over the field with Penney and Vance Wilson in tow. Wilson moved past Penney for second on lap 6 and began trying low and high lines to gain ground on McCoin’s fleet #7X machine. McCoin seemed to be in great form and he held his advantage over Wilson and the remainder of the field. As Wilson moved to the high line to close the gap on McCoin, the leader began to encounter lapped traffic and on lap 16, the Quincy, IL shoe, Wilson moved his #B1 machine past McCoin to claim the victory. McCoin claimed his best ULMA feature finish of 2013 in second. Bobby Penney ran a strong and consistent third, Brandon Imhoff returned to Double X to claim fourth and Justin Russell claimed fifth. Kevin Coyne raced his way to a sixth place finish, James Rutledge returning to racing after a few years absence overcame an opening lap tangle to finish seventh, Chris Cox was eighth, Greg Clemons finished ninth, Matt Sosebee was tenth and Earl Roark was eleventh after being involved in the opening lap skirmish also.

In the winged Sprint Cars, the experienced combination of driver Randy Martin and veteran driver/car owner David Brown joined forces to claim the feature victory. Martin started the feature event on the front row outside next to pole sitter Tyler Blank. At the drop of the green Blank charged into the lead and looked very comfortable and consistent leading the opening fifteen laps. The lead he had opened disappeared as a yellow flag was displayed for the disabled machine of Taylor Walton. The ensuing restart brought fans to their feet at it placed Martin right on the rear bumper of Blank. As the field charged into turn one on the restart, Blank entered the turn on the high line as Martin dove to the bottom and executed a classic slide job to take the lead as the duo went through turn two. Martin was able to maintain the lead as Blank charged up to the rear of the #48 machine but was unable to complete the pass as they raced under the checkered flag. Following Martin and Blank across the stripe were Jonathan Cornell, Jason Johnson, and Chad Ely in the top five. Bryan Grimes, Cody Baker, Tyler Elliott, Taylor Walton and AJ Wirts rounded out the top ten. Blank and Martin each claimed heat race victories respectively.

The close racing was not limited to the two feature divisions though as the Hobby Stock Feature event saw close racing for the top spot as well. Mike Schrader led the first five laps before being passed by AJ Wirts on lap 6. Wirts would lead for three laps before defending track champion Will Register would make a pass into the top spot on lap 9 and would pilot the Kelly Bullock owned #77 to claim the victory. AJ Wirts finished second, Schrader earned third, Chuck Coffey was fourth and Kevin Prall was fifth. Finishing in the top ten were Larry Dickson in sixth, Jeremiah Wallingford in seventh, Philip Dietz in eighth, Rudy Wirts ninth and Gage Wineland in tenth, Heat races were won by Wineland and AJ Wirts.

The Street Stock feature also features close racing at the top of the finishing order. Heat race winners Andrew Roark and Harlan Dowell, Jr. led the field and it was Dowell taking the lead and not relinquishing it for the duration of the 15 lap feature event. Roark pressured Dowell and looked comfortable in second but was edged at the finish by sixth starting John Clancy Jr. at the checkered flag. Following the lead trio, Johnny Wyman was fourth, Jay Lyle claimed fifth, point leader Derek Henson was sixth, Dale Berry was seventh, Jerry Unger eighth, Curt Turpin ninth and James Keeran completing the top ten.

Double X Speedway will be coming alive this Friday night for a special open wheel event with the ASCS Warrior Region making another appearance at the track. Joining the ASCS Sprint Cars will be the Mid America Lightning Sprints and the 600cc Micro Sprints running without their customary wings. The following Sunday night the Winged Sprints will be running for increased purse monies, along with the Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks and winged 600cc Micro Sprints. Race fans are also reminded to mark down Sunday July 14th as the first “Race for Riley”; Riley Hudson memorial race will be run featuring the return of the ULMA along with the three weekly core classes.
