Sunday Night Thunder at Double X Speedway completed the bookend of racing for the Holiday weekend and the drivers in attendance did not disappoint. With the Winged Sprint Cars racing for an increased purse 20 drivers checked in to try their hand at collecting the top prize. The stands were buzzing with excitement as the feature line up was led by the father/son duo of Randy and Evan Martin. On the opening lap it was Evan Martin who would take the point and lead the first few laps with his father Randy following. Fans eyes, however, were also watching tenth starting Tyler Blank and twentieth starting Jonathan Cornell who were advancing through the field. A lap five restart saw Randy Martin move to the front with a pass in turns three and four. Randy would lead until lap nine when Blank would complete his charge to the front of the field and take the lead. From that point forward Blank would maintain a comfortable lead over the competition.  Randy Martin would claim the second position with Evan Martin coming home third, Lanny Carpenter claimed fourth and Jonathan Cornell would advance 15 spots to claim fifth.  Curtis Evans drove a steady race to claim sixth, Bryan Grimes finished seventh, TJ Muths advanced from eighteenth to eighth at the stripe with Kyle Bellm finishing ninth and Chad Ely claimed tenth.

Three qualifying heat races were run with Randy Martin, Evan Martin and Bryan Grimes claiming the three respectively.

The 600 cc Micro Sprints were on hand with Quinton Benson of Sweet Springs claim his first victory of the season at Double X. Benson took the lead on lap one and survived challenges first from Cole Campbell and then from Ayrton Gennetten to claim the fifteen lap feature event. Following the lead duo of Benson and Gennetten under the checkered flag were Dean Hathmann in third, Cole Campbell in fourth and Scott Hathmann in fifth. Completing the top ten were Corey Nelson, Kyle Schlotz, Tyler Key in eighth, Jordan Howell ninth and Clayton Hisle in tenth. Qualifying heats were won by Benson and Campbell

The Street Stock Division was also in competition Sunday evening with Derek Henson returning to victory lane.  Henson had the field covered for the entire fifteen lap main event.  Early challenger Dale Berry would claim the second position, Johnny Wyman placed third, Andrew Roark earned fourth after a race long battle with fifth place finisher Jerry Unger. John Clancy Jr., Kevin Perkins, James Keeran and Curt Turpin rounded out the field. Henson and Berry claimed the heat races.

The Hobby Stock division completed the card in Sunday evening. Former track champion Will Register again put the Kelly Bullock Racing #77 into the victory circle. Register rang up the victory over second place Gage Wineland who drove an impressive race by voluntarily starting shotgun on the field. Third place was earned by AJ Wirts, fourth went to Mike Schrader and fifth was claimed by Rudy Wirts. Kevin Prall ran sixth, Larry Dickson claimed seventh, Jeremiah Wallingford was eighth, Laura Atkinson ninth and Ethan Green completed the top ten. Heat races were claimed by AJ Wirts and Register.

Racing action continues next Sunday night with the first “Race for Riley” Riley Hudson Memorial race. The ULMA Late Models will be joining the three weekly classes for this special event. Special prizes will be available for fans and racing fans are encouraged to bring their children as there will be special give away for them as well. A small auction of items will be presented at intermission with the proceeds split between Children’s Hospital and the “Race for Riley” memorial fund to help make this an annual event.  Be sure to like Double-X  Speedway on Facebook and check out the website at www.xxspeedway.com.
