KANSAS CITY, Kan. (July 16) — In front of the biggest audience of the season for the USMTS Casey’s Cup Series, Jeremy Payne stole the show Tuesday night as he led from start to finish en route to a $5,000 victory at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.

Driving the #186 Randy Davidson Trucking GRT/RoushYates modified, Payne never trailed all night. He won his heat race from the pole, redrew the #1 starting spot for the main event and then proceeded to lead all 40 laps to score his fifth win in 10 starts in the Arbor Masters Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports.

The win, however, did not come easy as the 27-year-old from Springfield, Mo., had to fend off the challenges of several would-be leaders throughout the course of the race.

Payne beat nine-time USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock into the first turn at the drop of the green flag, but was soon challenged by local favorite Nic Bidinger for the first seven laps.

Dustin Boney blasted underneath Bidinger on lap 8 and ran down Payne. But Boney’s effort was cut short five laps later when he quickly slowed on the back-stretch before steering his car into the infield with mechanical troubles.

Jason Hughes, who finished third here behind Payne and Ryan Gustin on April 19, claimed the second spot at that point and made a charge at the leader when the yellow flag waved at the halfway point of the race.

Veteran Ron Jones wrestled the spot away from Hughes on the restart, but contact with the back-stretch wall one-half-lap later ended his night and gave Hughes the spot back. Bidinger regained the runner-up position two laps later, but Hughes returned the favor on lap 27.

Johnny Scott showed his nose to Hughes the next time around, with Hughes suddenly slowing and exiting the track with mechanical woes. Scott narrowed the gap between himself and Payne, but was never able to get close enough to change the outcome.

It was Payne’s second straight win at the historic half-mile oval, and all but assured him of the Arbor Masters Central Region points title which carries a $5,000 award. This Friday and Saturday’s events at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., will settle the regional points battle.

Terry Phillips came from the 14th starting spot to finish third while Bidinger held on for fourth in front of Rodney Sanders, who passed 11 cars from his 16th position on the starting grid.

Shryock faded as far back as 12th during the first half of the race, but got faster as the race went on and rebounded for a sixth-place finish. Tim Setzer (started 18th), Ken Schrader (started 21st), Aaron Marrant (started 27th) and Dereck Ramirez (started 24th) rounded out the top 10 finishers, respectively.

Tuesday night’s blockbuster event also featured the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series with hall-of-famer Billy Moyer taking the win over Steve Francis.

This summer’s hottest ticket on dirt continues tomorrow night as the stars and cars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and United States Modified Touring Series collide at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, for the biggest show ever to hit the dirt in the Hawkeye State.

The event in Webster City-the biggest ever at the historic half-mile oval-will also be the final points race for the USMTS in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region presented by Day Motor Sports. After the checkered flag waves, another handful of drivers will punch their ticket to challenge in this year’s Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup.

Tickets are $30 for adults, kids ages 13-16 are $15 and children ages 6-12 are $10. Pit passes are $40. Pit gates will open at 2 p.m. and grandstands open at 4. There will be an autograph session for fans from 5:30-6 p.m., with hot laps set for 6:45 and racing to follow.

For those fans unable to attend, both events will be available live online via pay-per-view at DirtonDirt.com. Fans can place their pay-per-view orders now at www.dirtondirt.com/liveEvents.php.

The swing wraps up on Friday and Saturday, July 19-20, at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.
