LOCUST GROVE, Ark. (Aug. 2) — Jason Krohn didn’t score any points Friday night. Instead, the 2007 USMTS national champion scored $5,000 in a convincing win as the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup kicked off at the Batesville Motor Speedway.

Although he isn’t running for the season-ending, the 41-year-old from Slayton, Minn., served notice that he will be a force to be reckoned with at any event he enters from here on out.

Krohn, who ranks Mooney Starr’s popular 3/8-mile oval as one of his all-time favorites, took the lead at the drop of the green flag and dominated the 35-lap main event while registering the 28th victory of his career and first since Aug. 30 of last year.

“I always enjoy coming here,” Krohn said in victory lane. “Tonight things worked our way. We drew up front for the heat and heat position was big. That got us enough points and then they (the other drivers in the redraw) left me the 2 and the 5. I was lucky enough to pull the 2 and at that point we had a good enough car.”

Rodney Sanders drew the pole for the feature race with Krohn starting on his right. After Krohn jumped out to lead the initial lap, Sanders was unable to close in and contest his teammate.

After the race’s second and final caution on lap 12, Jeremy Payne was able to get around Sanders on the restart but was unable to keep up with Krohn.

Krohn rode the high line to a huge lead and worked every inch of the track’s surface to maneuver through lapped traffic. Payne closed the gap to about three car-lengths late in the race but was never able to challenge for the lead.

“After the “B” Mains I was kind of worried-I think everybody was-about right rear tire problems. They blew a couple out and were just wearing them out,” said Payne. “I was kind of trying to save mine. Jason had a good car, he was fast from the start. We just ran out of laps.”

Sanders held on to finish second with Stormy Scott fourth and Chris Brown fifth. Terry Phillips was sixth, Johnny Scott wound up seventh, Jason Hughes earned an eight-place paycheck, Kelly Shryock nabbed the ninth spot and Johnny Bone Jr. rounded out the top 10.

Johnny Scott remains the points leader in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup while Stormy Scott advanced three positions and sits just six points behind his twin brother as the series heads for the West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Mo., for the second of twenty scheduled events in the title chase.

Mother Nature thwarted the series debut at West Plains in 2011, but fans finally got their due last year and witnessed Shryock take down his 177th career USMTS triumph. This past May, Hughes picked up the win in the series’ second visit to the historic speedplant.

The West Plains Motor Speedway is a 100-acre motorsports facility with an exciting 3/8-mile red clay oval surrounded by seating that will accommodate more than 12,000 fans who can enjoy the action from their choice of molded contour seating, ground level bleachers or high-rise stadium style seating.

Pit gates open at 5:00, grandstands open at 6:00, hot laps begin at 7:00 and racing starts at 7:30. Also in action will be USRA B-Mods, Hobby Stocks, Super Stocks and Crate Late Models. Adult tickets are $15, Kids ages 6-11 are $5 and children 5 and under are free. Pit passes are $35 or $15 for kids.

Pick up a coupon good for $2 off adult grandstand admission at any of the four Casey’s General Stores locations in West Plains. To find the location nearest you, visit www.caseys.com.

The West Plains Motor Speedway is located 6 miles south of West Plains on US 63. For more information, call the track office at 417-522-9891 or 417-257-2112 on race day. The track’s website can be found at www.westplainsdirt.com.
