Double-X Speedway
California, MO
August 11, 2013

By: Dean Reichel

The curtain has drawn on another season of racing at Double-X Speedway but the performers on the dirt stage will leave fans with much to talk about over the off season. With an excess of rain on Friday in the area the traditional Saturday finale had to be run on Sunday night. The pits were full as drivers checked in for their last time to do battle at the Speedway in 2013.

Fans will be talking about the feature event in the Winged Sprint Car division for days to come. Wright City, Missouri shoe Adam Jones took the lead at the drop of the green over fellow front row starter Bryan Grimes and third starting Tyler Blank. Jones kept his number 1A sprinter on the top shelf and opened a small lead over the field in the opening laps but the battle was shaping up behind him. Fifth starting Cody Baker was biding his time and a lap 6 restart saw Baker put the Ted Hall #38 into second place and set his sights on the fleet car of Jones. While the leader began to encounter lapped traffic, Josh Fisher moved into second on lap seven but Baker was not to be denied as he reigned the number two spot three laps later. With the leader Jones working the high groove Baker used the low line to begin to challenge for the lead and moved into the number one spot on lap 21 by a slim margin but Jones continued attacking the cushion and regained the lead and held Baker off by a very slim margin at the checkered flag. Following the fleet leaders across the finish line were Tyler Blank, Bryan Grimes and Corey Nelson respectively in the top five. Josh Fisher would settle for sixth in the Curtis Boyer team car, Curtis Evans was seventh, TJ Muths slipped by at the finish to claim eighth over ninth place finisher Lanny Carpenter and Frank Brown rounded out the top ten. Qualifying heat races were won by Grimes and Jones. After taking the checkered Jones performed some celebratory victory donuts in turns 3 & 4 reminiscent of his friend Jesse Hockett.

The Street Stock division saw a high level of attrition in their feature event but that did not dampen the quality racing which occurred in the event. Derek Henson survived five failed attempts to start the feature and took the lead on the opening lap. Early challenges from Jerry Unger and then from hard charging John Clancy Jr. would ultimately see Clancy taking the lead on lap eleven and with victory in his grasp a yellow flag for the stalled car of Dylan Bias crossways in turn one would cause the yellow flag to be displayed on the final lap. As the field was shaping up for the restart Clancy’s engine would expire on the front straight which placed Henson back in first place. Henson would claim the victory on the green, white, checkered restart. Curt Turpin had a very strong run to take second, Jim Kimbell came home third, Mark Davis recovered from an early spin to take fourth and Jerry Unger was fifth. Dylan Bias crossed the stripe sixth. Heat race victories were taken by Ted Welschmeyer and Henson.

Fourteen Hobby Stock drivers answered the call for their feature event with Gage Wineland claiming another feature victory. Wineland was chased to the checkers by Will Register’s #77 machine. Kevin Prall claimed a solid third, Chuck Coffey was fourth and Mike Schrader claimed fifth. AJ Wirts was sixth, Larry Dickson finished seventh, Jeremiah Wallingford was crossed under the checkered flag eighth. Register and Wineland claimed the heat races.

It was once again the Dean Hathman show in the 600cc Micro Sprints as he claimed a comfortable victory. Behind the leader the action was quite intense as Dwayne Benson, Scott Hathman and Cole Campbell waged a torrid battle for second through fourth. At the checkered flag it was Benson who would claim the runner up position, Campbell was third, Scott Hathman fourth and Kyle Schlotz finished fifth,

After the evenings racing card was complete the season awards were presented.  Complete award results will be reported in next week’s edition of The California Democrat.

Track owners Kyle and Carol Wirts wish to thank all of the fans and drivers that helped to make the 2013 season at Double X Speedway a successful and memorable one. Enjoy the off season and we hope to see you all return for “Sunday Night Thunder” in 2014.
