Hitt Doubles Up at Quad City

EAST MOLINE, IL – August 11, 2013 – It was two for the Price of one if you were a 4-cylinder fan at the Quad City Speedway on Sunday.

4-cylinder’s had, not one, but two features. The first was a make up due to last Sunday’s (8/4) time constraints. The result was the same in each of them as Aaron Hitt swept the evening.

The make up feature opened with a two car accident off turn four on Lap 2. Mike Wisdom was headed for the infield to park when he came across Gage Setser’s nose. Hitt dominated after that with Ken Stogdell and Zach Bollinger bringing out two more cautions on Lap 6 and 7.

Eric Stogdell and Brandon Dahl were battling for the lead on Lap 8 in the second feature. Stogdell’s No. 50 slowed up entering turn three and Brandon Dahl slammed into his back bumper. It resulted in the two wrecking each other in turn four.

Zach Dahl restarted in the lead, but was passed by Hitt with three to go to take the checkered. Zach Dahl finished second in the scheduled feature. Brandon finished second in the make up.

Eric Gustaf started on the pole in the Eriksen Chevrolet-Buick IMCA Late Models feature. Gustaf pulled out to lead for the opening three circuits. Cory Goldbeck’s spin in the middle of turn’s three and four on lap four brought out the only caution flag of the feature.

The Field regrouped and restarted with 21 laps to go. Mike Zemo Jr. put the pass on Gustaf in Turn 2 just after the green flag dropped. Car “Z” led from there on out to take his first feature win at QCS in 2013.

After threatening Zemo’s lead with 11 to go, Todd Malmstrom dropped back to finish in third. Nate Beuseling finished second after passing Malmstrom with four laps to go. Mike Cothron and Rob Toland rounded out the Top 5.

Toppert Services UMP Modified 2013 QCS wins leader Milo Veloz Jr. took command of the lead on lap two by passing pole-sitter Colin Thirlby. Thirlby’s No. 47 machine couldn’t move forward in the 20-lapper as he settled for a fifth-place finish.

Shaune Lewis’s lap-four spin in Turn 2 brought the lone caution out. This was the only shot the field had at Veloz Jr. On the restart, it was Veloz Jr’s V43 that continued to lead. By lap 11, the V43 had checked out on the rest of the field, setting sail to his fifth feature victory of the year.

The real race was second-through-sixth. Side-by-side by action for most of the middle part of the event made it exciting. Cody Bauman took the runner-up spot with Matt Werner and Brock Bauman rounding out the Top 4.

Greg Durbin took his No. 8 vehicle to victory lane under caution in the U-Pull-A-Parts/Cimco IMCA Modifieds 20 Lap feature. The race saw seven yellow flags, including the one that officially ended the event on the final lap.

Durbin started on the outside of row five and was already in second position by the time the first yellow waved on Lap 4. He passed Leland Bushong on the restart to assume the lead. Bushong’s night got worse from there. With three laps to go, Bushong spun from seventh spot. He still rallied for a ninth-place finish out of 15 cars.

Eric Barnes had a nice night coming through field, starting right in front of Durbin. Barnes finished second with Jason Bahrs, Brian Bushong and Craig Crawford rounding out the Top 5.

The Mod Lites came close to exceeding the caution limit in their 12 lap feature. Seven cautions were brought out in the first eight laps. Series points leader Shon Sanders made quick work getting to the lead after the first yellow flag.

Sanders restarted in fourth and was leading off turn two on the opening lap. He and his No. 4 machine threaded the needle between Bryan Brinker and Mike Pershing on the restart on lap two. Pershing finished sixth and led the only lap Sanders didn’t lead. Brinker came home in second.

Jarrett Franzen took home the Weber Auto Group Street Stocks trophy for the sixth time at QCS in 2013. A wreck involving Rob Nylin and series points leader, Chris Lawrence, on Lap 2 may spoiled Lawrence’s night.

All though Lawrence finished second, the man tailing him in the points won the feature.  Cary Brown finished third and Gary Weatherington Jr. finished fourth.
