(Moberly, Mo) – Just 15 events remain for this year’s Lucas Cattle Company championship as points-earning opportunities become pivotal down the home stretch for title hopefuls. It appears that Vance Wilson, who claimed the 2010 ULMA championship, has positioned himself as a valid challenger to dethrone last year’s champion and current leader, Jason Russell.

Wilson’s stellar summer swing continued last weekend at Randolph County Raceway (RCR) when he registered his ninth victory of the year and sixth in a row on the high-banked facility located in Moberly, Missouri. It was Wilson’s 15th straight top-three finish; however, he has one DNF on the season. By comparison, Russell has 16 straight top-three finishes in 16 starts and leads Wilson by 71 points as the season draws to a close.

Saturday’s victory for Russell came from the pole position, which he earned by rocketing from sixth on the starting grid in the first heat race to claim victory ahead of Rookie of the Year candidate, Bobby Penney, while Larry Winn crossed the line in third. Former RCR feature winner Kenny Mudd claimed victory in the second heat race ahead of Zeke Langley and Terry Wilson, who was making just his second start of the season.

Vance Wilson and Kenny Mudd led the charge in the main event and from the onset Wilson ran strong at the front and kept all challengers behind him. A late-race caution made things interesting for Wilson as Penney, who ran consistent among the top three for the entire race distance, appeared as though he may have found a better line around the track than Wilson but time ran out on the young Excelsior Springs, Missouri driver as he settled for second place, his best ULMA finish to date.

Tommy Cordray rallied from 8th on the grid to bring home a podium finish of third with Terry Wilson finishing strong in fourth, one rung ahead of another driver posting his best-ever ULMA finish in fifth, Cliff Powell. Steve Dieckmann, Chris Cox, Ryan Petersheim, Dave Miller and veteran driver Richard Kimberling rounded out the top ten.

The fast and furious action at RCR continues this weekend as ULMA racing returns to the track for another night of racing on Saturday, August 17. Visit www.randolphcountyraceway.com or call 660-833-1727 for additional information.

Another Friday night program at Callaway was washed away by heavy rains last weekend as the track suffered its tenth rained-out event of the year. Track personnel and drivers are hoping for dryer weather this weekend and will try to convene at the track this Friday, August 16 in Fulton, Missouri. Information is available by contacting track owner and race promoter Betty Atterberry at (573) 220-1751 or (573) 592-7795.

ULMA racing returns to Lucas Oil Speedway Saturday, August 17 for “Travel Centers of America and Petro Stopping Centers Fan Appreciation Night.” According to the track’s latest press release, “Fans arriving prior to 6:30pm can take advantage of the special $30 pricing package that includes (4) Admissions, (4) Hot Dogs, and (4) Coke Products plus TA/Petro will have plenty of fan giveaways as well as food and drink specials throughout the night. The release goes on to say, “TA/Petro will also include an added bonus in each Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series class providing $300 Gift Certificates for the Lucas Oil Parts Store to the winner in each class on Saturday.
