Lucas Oil Speedway Weekly Series Season Champions Honored this past weekend!

Wheatland, Missouri – November 5th, 2013 – With nearly 200 drivers, crew members, sponsors, family, and friends in attendance this past Saturday evening at University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, Missouri, Lucas Oil Speedway officially crowned the 2013 Season Champions in each of the (4) Weekly Racing Series classes. Lebanon, Missouri’s Kris Jackson scored his second consecutive Lucas Oil Speedway Season Championship in the Tri-Lakes RV B-Mods while Brian Schutt captured his first ever championship in the Carson’s Corner Napa Factory Stocks. Sedalia, Missouri’s Terry Schultz took home top honors in the Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds while Henley, Missouri’s Jason Russell backed up his 2012 USRA Modified Track Championship with a Championship in the ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Models.

A social hour kicked off the the evening’s program as all in attendance were able to gather for fellowship and reflection on the 2013 racing season as an outstanding “Thrills and Spills” video compiled by Robert Claunch from RCR Designs played on the giant screen at the front of the banquet hall. Upon completion of the Invocation by Allen Perkins and Larry Smith of Raceway Ministries, dinner was served promptly at 7pm as guests enjoyed a delicious combination of Grilled Beef Medallions smothered with Mother’s Brewery brown ale demi glaze and Grilled Chicken with roasted fiji apple compote.

Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager/Promoter Dan Robinson began the formal portion of the awards banquet with a welcome and thank you to all those that make each season possible. Robinson noted that LOS averaged over 118 cars for each of the weekly shows in 2013 while also noting an overall attendance increase of over 18,000 fans in 2013 over 2012. Robinson also announced that all four weekly racing series class sponsors had signed on for 2014 to a round of applause from all in attendance. Robinson then turned the mic over to long time track PA announcer Kevin Fletcher to hand out the the driver awards.

The first class up was the Tri-Lakes RV B-Mods as the Top-10 were honored culminated by Jackson receiving his championship hardware and an outstanding package of cash and contingency awards. Runner-up in the B-Mods for 2013 was young Colt Pruente out of Verona, Missouri. Ryan Eddy took third followed by Jeff Douty in fourth and Steven Muilenburg in fifth. Sixth through tenth went to Scott Chism, Jim Cihy, Gary Clark, Zach Zeugin, and Bobby Williams respectively.

Up next was the Carson’s Corner Napa Factory Stocks as fellow Lebanon, Missouri area driver Brian Schutt stole the show with his heart felt acceptance speech as he thanked a long list of family and friends that allowed him to capture his first ever racing championship. Joplin’s Johnny Coats improved to second this season while former track champion Marc Carter held down the third spot after the final event of the season. Kenny Carroll and Chip Shaddox rounded out the top-5. Another former track champion Randy Gilmore held on for sixth with newcomer Shawn Whitman finishing in seventh just ahead of Ted Welschmeyer. Craig Danuser and Francisco Escamilla took ninth and tenth. With six of the top ten cars this season running Josh Franklin Motorsports built cars, the drivers surprised Franklin with a photo collage courtesy of Chris Bork at CB Race Photos.

In one of the most competitive classes in 2013, Sedalia, Missouri’s Terry Schultz outlasted a stellar field of Pitts Homes USRA Modified competitors to score his first ever LOS Championship. There were 882 drivers in 2013 that ran under the USRA modified banner nationwide in 2013 and five of the top-10 in USRA National points ran at Lucas Oil Speedway! Nevada’s Jon Sheets compiled an outstanding season to finish second at the finish while local favorite Jason Pursley scored a win on the final night of the season to lock up the third spot. Jason Russell used consistency to finish in fourth while Chanute, Kansas veteran John Allen held down the final spot in the top-5. Stephen Muilenburg, Nathan Vaughn, Lucas Dobbs, Jeff Cutshaw, and Tyler Brown completed the top-10.

The final class of the evening to be recognized was the ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Models as Jason Russell dominated the class from start to finish to cap off a dream season scoring his first ULMA Late Model track championship. Russell was also the overall ULMA Late Model Champion. 2012 Champion Jeremy Kelley came up one spot short this year finishing in 2nd while upstart second generation driver Payton Looney finished in third. Veterans Jon Billing and Tommy Cordray came out in fourth and fifth at the finish. Barnett, Missouri’s Todd McCoin finished his first full time season running at Wheatland in sixth as Larry Jones took the seventh spot. Ethan Young, R.D. Peterson, and Justin Russell rounded out the top-10.

Finally, to cap off the evening, Ozark Entertainment DJ Gabe broke out the jukebox turning the awards banquet into a dance hall and party atmosphere as those in attendance enjoyed the best music selections available. All seemed to enjoy the evening and couldn’t wait to talk about 2014.
