USMTS - United States Modified Touring SeriesTIPTON, Iowa-Events in Iowa and Missouri await the drivers of the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by Swan Energy this week with three critical battles on tap in the hotly-contested Major League Bowhunter Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports.
The Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, Iowa, will kick things off on Thursday, April 24. From there, the tireless USMTS touring titans return to the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway in Bloomfield, Iowa, on Friday, April 25, before wrapping up the tripleheader weekend on Saturday, April 26, at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo.

Each event will pay at least $2,000 to win and a minimum of $250 to take the green flag in the main event.

With three regional points races in the books, three different winners have tasted victory. The top five drivers in the rankings are separated by a mere 42 points.

Defending USMTS National Champion Rodney Sanders leads a herd of high-horsepower hustlers in the regional points standings, but not far behind-eight points to be exact-is Zack VanderBeek, who will make his 600 career start with the United States Modified Touring Series on Thursday.

Stormy Scott, who is the only driver still eligible for a $100,000 Road Runner Challenge bonus money at season’s end, is just five markers behind VanderBeek. If Scott can win all four regional titles and conquer the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup, he will take home a record $100,000 for his efforts.

Dereck Ramirez sits fourth in the standings while USMTS Rookie of the Year points leader Jake Gallardo of Las Cruces is fifth. Johnny Scott is sixth, seventh is Austin Siebert, Dylan Smith holds the eighth spot, Hunter Rasdon ranks ninth and tenth is all tied up with Kelly Shryock and Darron Fuqua.

Thursday’s tilt will be the fourth straight year the USMTS Modifieds have invaded the high-banked quarter-mile clay oval in Tipton. Johnny Scott, Stormy Scott and Ryan Gustin captured wins in each of the three previous stops.

Also running will be IMCA-type Late Models paying $1,000 to win. Adult tickets are $20, kids ages 13-16 and seniors get in for $15 and children 12 and under are free, Pit passes are $35. Racing starts at 7 p.m.

It’s been nearly four years since the USMTS Modifieds made their sixth visit to the Davis County Fairgrounds in Bloomfield, Iowa. Ryan Gustin won that night, breaking the stranglehold that Kelly Shryock had on the 3/8-mile slightly-banked clay oval.

In the previous five meetings, Shryock won them all, including his victory in 2006 which was the last of his 11-race win streak which still stands as the USMTS record today.

The last time the USMTS Modifieds churned the clay in Bloomfield was Aug. 1, 2008, when nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock capped a record string of 11 straight wins before Mike Hejna ended Shryock’s streak the following night in Memphis, Mo. In fact, the USMTS has visited the Bloomfield Speedway five times – all of them won by Shryock.

Sharing the spotlight on Friday will be the Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars ($750 to win) and USRA B-Mods ($600 to win).

Adult tickets are $17, kids ages 7-14 are $5 and children 4 and under are free. Pit passes are $35.

The first green flag is slated to wave at 7 p.m.

Saturday night will find the series back at the I-35 Speedway for the first time since the controversial finish last August that saw Stormy Scott profit from the last-lap skirmish between Jason Hughes and Jeremy Payne.

Other former winners at the 3/8-mile semi-banked dirt oval include Ryan Gustin, Ron Ver Beek, Johnny Scott, Mark Noble, Scott Drake, John Van Den Berg, John Allen and Kelly Shryock who leads all drivers with three wins here.
