(Warrensburg, MO)  A huge crowd packed the stands at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) Saturday night for the track’s official opening night. Drivers and fans alike were thrilled to be back in attendance at the track on KOKO AM 1450 Radio race night. Saturday night featured the USRA ‘Mighty’ Modifieds, B-Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Pure Stocks, CMS also hosted sprint cars with the first-ever appearance of the Impact Signs, Awnings and Wraps WAR-Wingless Auto Racing (WAR) series with 15 drivers checking in and Chris Parkinson taking the checkers. Visit THIS LINK ON STLRACING for complete WAR results.

The exciting news rolled in late Wednesday afternoon from the United States Racing Association, that CMS’s weekly ‘Mighty Modified’ program was approved to be USRA sanctioned for the 2014 season.  The fans were happy to hear the roar of engines with a good field of drivers on hand to entertain the crowd.

In modified action, 14 drivers competed throughout the evening. Jason Bodenhamer tumbled several times in turn 3 in heat race one, he was uninjured in the incident and his crew made repairs in time for him to return for the main event to close out the evening. Terry Schultz and Dean Wille snatched the two heat race checkers.

On the opening laps of the modified feature, Schultz led the field into turn one and never looked back for the 25-lap main event. Back in the field, Trevor Hunt and Dean Wille battled early on with Aaron Marrant in the mix just behind. No one really ever challenged Schultz as he captured the win and the $1,000 payout.  Trevor Hunt looked strong in second with Aaron Marrant, Tyler Schmidt and Jim Moody filling out the top five.

For the B-modifieds, 21 cars contested four heats with opening night victories going to Curtis Berry, Chad Staus, Chris Cain, and Jacob Ebert.

In the main event, Dean Wille flew into turn one with the early lead with Curtis Berry, Chad Staus and Chris Cain close on his tail. Wille looked to be the driver to beat early until he got together with Staus, which ultimately caused a flat tire. Wille later returned to the action after his crew changed the tire on the infield, a new feature at CMS this season. Cain moved into the top spot with Ebert hot on his tail down low followed by Curtiss Berry, until he went over turn three.

At the checkers Chris Cain from Columbia grabbed the first B-modified feature victory of the season with Jacob Ebert, Johnny McGinnis, Joe Walker and Nic Bennett rounding out the top five.

Street Stocks battled for the first feature win on opening night with veteran driver Jay Lyle and relative youngster Bryce McMillin claiming heat wins.

As drivers accelerated to the green flag for the feature, Brett Wood and Troy Turley battled for the lead while McMillin spun and restarted at the tail of the field. Wood showed his skills early in the race, maneuvering throughout the track for the top spot.  After several laps, Turley dove to the low side to grab the lead; however, after the next yellow, Wood returned the favor and captured the lead for good. The veteran driver from Warrensburg, Jay Lyle showed the youngsters how to race with a strong run in the top three.

When the double checkers finally flew, Brett Wood from Warrensburg claimed the feature win. Jay Lyle, Roger Stone, Larry Ferris and Donnie Tanner filled out the top-five slots. Turley was disqualified after crossing the line in second due to a post-race rules violation.

Pure Stocks are a new class to CMS this season with room to build upon, but that didn’t stop the three cars from doing their best for the fans on hand. Darrin ‘the bear’ Christy from Kansas City showed his experience by picking up the first feature win of the year in the pre-stocks with 15-year old Leroy Morrison in second and Gary Akers third.

Join us again next Saturday night for Pepsi Night at the Races with all four weekly classes and the return of the ULMA Late Models for their first of six appearances at CMS this year.
