Jacob Poel Wins Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series Gary Cook, Jr. Memorial at FALS

American Modified SeriesFairbury, IL- May 23, 2014- The Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series presented its second event of the 2014 Memorial Day Weekend Trifecta on Saturday evening at Fairbury’s American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, IL with the inaugural running of the Gary Cook, Jr. Memorial and Jacob Poel of Spring Lake, MI would take the checkered flag on Saturday evening to score the $2,064 payday in the 30 lap contest aboard the Lakeshore Custom Service/Gilboe’s Lock and Safe/A&A Manufacturing sponsored #82 Rocket Chassis powered by a Rhyne Race Engine.

The victory was worth $2,064 for Poel and would be his second straight series win after winning the weekend’s opening event at Farmer City Raceway the evening before in what was the series 45th event and second ever visit to Fairbury’s American Legion Speedway.

Jay Ledford would take the race lead at the start of the 30 lap main event, with Matt Mevert, Jacob Poel, and Lance Dehm giving chase. The action would heat up on lap 7 as the trio of Ledford, Mevert, and Dehm would battle three-wide for the lead, with Dehm coming out on top for the lead on lap 8. Dehm would be challenged repeatedly until Mevert would take the race lead on lap 16. Mevert would hold the top spot and look poised for the win until Poel made a late move and would take the race lead on lap 28 and hold on to claim the victory. Mevert would take runner-up honors in the event, while Ledford would finish in the third position. Steven Brooks would race his way into the top five and come home in the fourth position, while hard charger Jeff Leka would start 16th, but would finish in the fifth position.

The remainder of the top ten at the completion of Fairbury’s American Legion Speedway’s Gary Cook, Jr. Memorial A-Main would be Lance Dehm, 17th starting Mike McKinney, Jeb Friedman, 18th starting Jim Farris, Sr., and Cory Schwengel. The 30 lap, $2,064 event would be slowed by three caution periods.

In preliminary action, Jay Ledford would be the Quick Car Racing Product top qualifier among 37 entries at 13.993 seconds. Summit Racing Equipment heat one went to Matt Mevert, while Jacob Poel scored the win in Wiles Driveshafts heat two. Hypercoils heat three went to Jay Ledford, with Lance Dehm winning Frankland Racing Equipment heat four. Mike McKinney and Jim Farris, Sr. would be the winner of the Stealth Racewear B-Mains, while series provisional starting positions went to Rick Weekly and Jimmy Dehm.

The next events for the Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series is tonight May 25 at Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, IN for the inaugural Kim Richardson Memorial. The event will be 40 laps and pay $4,000 to win and $225 to start, plus there will also be a special non-qualifiers event that will pay $750 to win and $100 to start.
