(Warrensburg, Mo) Mother Nature dealt a hot one for fans in the stands and drivers on hand for 98.5 FM ‘The Bar’ night at the races. Sixty-seven came through the CMS gates in five divisions, 16 USRA Modifieds, 16 Street Stocks, 20 B-Modifieds, 5 Pure Stocks, and 10 ULMA Late Models.

Drivers competed in regular weekly championship racing one week after the special-events held during the Independence Day weekend. Pure Stocks started the night off with a couple of new drivers on hand in the fledgling class. Drivers participated in a lone heat race to sort out their main-event lineup for later in the evening. Newcomer Kyle Rowland of Olathe, Kansas took the checkered first over Don Johnson and Leroy Morrison, Jr.

B-Modified drivers again produced another solid car count and were the lone class to have at least three preliminary heat races during the program. Point’s leader Dean Wille of Warrensburg claimed heat one with Richard Brainard and Dallas White following him to the line. Cody Brill came from fourth to take heat two over Eddie Bray, Jr., and Jordan Clemons. For heat three, Scotty Martin of Independence, Missouri took the win over Dean Truelove, and Chris Stout.

Guest Class ULMA Late Models were next for two heat races on the card. Outside pole-sitter and defending ULMA Rookie of the Year Payton Looney claimed the first heat with Jon Binning and Steve Clancy following him to the line. Lockwood, Missouri’s Dwight Niehoff drove to the win in heat two over Gage Wineland and Jefferson City, Missouri-driver, Chris Cox.

One week after their special big-money event, Street Stocks took to the track next in a pair of 8-car heat races. Brett Wood rolled to a big win in front of his L&L Pest Control Sponsors on hand for heat race number one. Visiting driver Jay Prevete looked strong in second with Bobby Raybourn finishing third. Allen Perryman of Belton, Missouri claimed the win in heat two with Troy Turley and Clayton Campbell of Otterville, Missouri in third.

Finishing out the preliminary heat races were the USRA Modifieds, who also competed in a pair of 8-car heat races to determine their main event starting grid. Brian ‘Back in Black’ Johnson put on a domination clinic for the opening heat race for the USRA Modifieds with Dean Wille edging Tim Karrick in a classic battle to the line for second and third. For the final heat race of the night, Jim Moody went from fourth on the grid to first in a matter of a lap-and-a-half to beat Terry Schultz and Gunner Martin to the line as preliminary action completed.

First out for their eight-lap main event were the Pure Stocks. Picking up right where he left off in preliminary action, Kansan, and newcomer to the Pure Stocks Kyle Rowland dominated the main event for the class. Don Johnson ran a steady race all throughout the event to pick up a strong second, his best of the season, while Leroy Morrison finished in third.

Dean Wille had been the strongest in B-Modified action through the first half of the season claiming four wins along the way and securing a solid lead in the B-Modified standings. For the main event, former track champion and multi-time winner Scotty Martin claimed the number one starting position on the grid with Wille to his outside.

The 15-lap event began with Martin quickly pulling out to an early race lead with Wille and recent main-event winner Troy Carlyle in tow. The first caution of the event flew on lap six for a single-car spin in turn three as Martin led Wille, Carlyle, Eddie Bray, Jr., and Cody Brill inside the top five.

Shortly after the ensuing restart, Ernie Walker and Olen Stephens encountered trouble as they spun in turns one and two once again slowing field. Martin still held point over Wille and Carlyle through lap ten after the race resumed. Clearly, Martin had the best car on this night as he easily sailed to victory, his 22nd career win at CMS. Wille held strong in second, followed by Carlyle, Brill, Bray, and Curtis Berry, who advanced from fourteenth on the grid to the top six.

The Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Models returned to the speedway next for their 20-lap main event. Dwight Niehoff, already a ULMA winner this season began the race from outside of row one in search of his first-ever CMS win. Niehoff quickly shot out to an early race lead over pole-sitter Payton Looney and former track champion Jon Binning.

The cars on hand set a blistering pace with Niehoff commanding the race in front of a fierce battle for second between Binning and Looney with Steve Clancy and Lane Ehlert inside the top five. On lap 11, Jimmy Jobe encountered problems in turn four as the caution waived for the first time.

On the restart, Niehoff continued to lead Looney and Binning, still engaged in a torrid battle for second. Just shy of the 15-lap marker, Late Model newcomer, Troy Reasoner, Jr., and Jobe were involved in grinding crash off of turn four, which brought out the red flag. Both drivers were okay but were done for the evening.

For the final restart Niehoff held strong out front with Binning moving to the high side to take second over Looney. Lap-after-lap the two drivers ran hard for the second spot while Niehoff kept a comfortable lead out front. Gage Wineland moved into the mix in the race’s closing segments but in the end, no one had anything for Niehoff who easily captured the victory. Binning made his late-race pass for the lead stick for a runner-up finish just in front of Looney, Gage Wineland, Steve Clancy, and Chris Cox.

A full moon set over the speedway ground as the Street Stocks came to the track for what turned out to be a caution-filled main event. Multiple cautions plagued the 15-lap event with caution appearing right of the gate for a multi-car incident in turn one. Several cars were involved including Jay Lyle and Chad Eickleberry.

Just past the middle of the race, close proximity racing led to several occurrences on the speedway as drivers seemed unable to find the needed rhythm to settle in for the drive. Clayton Campbell exited the track due to a flat tire while earlier in the race a strong run by Perryman came to an end after contact off turn to ultimately forced him to spin into the infield.

A second yellow flag fell over the field for Herb Dannar’s spun machine in turns three and fourth. At the restart, Brett Wood led Jay Privette, Troy Turley and Allen Perryman. On lap 10, another caution waved over the field.

Not even multiple caution periods and a serious challenge early on from Privette and Turley, no one could prevent Brett Wood as he claimed his sixth victory of the year, this time ahead of Turley, who recorded a season-best second-place finish with Bryce McMillin also running strong in third. Bobby Raybourn advanced to fourth at the line with Bret Cox and Larry Ferris rounding out the top six.

With last week’s outstanding feature event still weighing heavily on the minds of many CMS returns this week, the grid for the main event pulled onto the track for the closing race of the night. Schultz led early with Moody and Brian Johnson filing in just behind the leader. A lap-two caution flag waived over the field for Dean Wille, who came to a halt on the front stretch but was able to continue on in the event.

The spectacular racing continued through lap ten as Schultz remained out front over Moody in second and Tim Karrick third. Karrick’s night nearly came to an end as he went over the turn embankment, ultimately re-starting at the tail of the field.

By lap 20, Moody regained the lead from Schultz as the pair continued to thrill the fans with yet another race set to come down to the wire. I late-race caution flew on lap twenty as the man on the move was former champion Aaron Marrant who by now made his way to third. Dalton Krik also ran solidly inside the top four all race long.

To close out the event, the field was stopped twice more by single-car spins and each time Schultz was able to hold his line and eventually crossed the line first over Moody, Marrant, Kirk, Karrick, who rebounded to claim fifth, and Brian Johnson inside the top six.

In victory lane, Shultz said, “We’ve had a lot of bad luck the last few weeks. I’m just glad things seem to be working right” stated Schultz. It was Schultz’s third CMS win this year and 54th of his career at CMS and first USRA-sanctioned win since last winning at CMS on May 31. Schultz now has seven USRA wins on the year at five separate tracks.

Next week at CMS on Saturday, July 19 is 95.3 KDKD Night at the Races featuring USRA modifieds, b-Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and guest class the Allstar Midget Series. CMS is now accepting donations for the annual kid’s night at the races on August 2 to include small toys, school supplies, kid-related goodies, candy, or cash donations. The goal is for every kid in attendance will receive a goody back filled with various donations from drivers, fans, and staff, who all enjoy the kid’s night festivities.
