Shirley Sharp in UMP LM Main

Gilpin Great in Mod Main

UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour   JULY 16 2014

By Scott Wolfe

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Chatham, Illinois driver Brian Shirley led every lap despite pressure from all twenty-one contenders, roaring to the $5,000 win in the 40-lap UMP Summer Nationals ‘Hell Tour’ Late Model feature at Brad McCown’s Atomic Speedway Wednesday night. In the companion Summit Modified UMP Summer Nationals ‘Hell Tour’ $1,000 to win 20-lap A-main, Devin Gilpin, Columbus, Indiana brought home the win after a heated battle with Late Model kingpin Jackie Boggs.  Dean Boyd, Williamsburg, Ohio claimed the Street Stock main and Flemingsburg, KY driver Mitchell Fields won the Sport Mod main.

Regular Saturday night racing returns to Atomic this Saturday, July 19 for a $3,000 to win Late Model feature.

The track was blistering fast in hot laps and qualifying, due greatly to excellent track prep and cloudy skies. The trade off for the clouds was rain in much of the area, an asterisk that took a bite out of the crowd in what was otherwise a great night in the first-ever appearance of the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) at Atomic.

Insane Duane Chamberlain, Richmond, Indiana started off the evening with a fast time of 13:766 in the Late Models. The mark was less than .35 off the track record.

Shirley was the class of the field in the feature, however, Chamberlain gave him an early run for the money. Chamberlain dogged Shirley on each of three restarts and kept the race interesting from start to finish. After the last restart though, Shirley turned on the afterburners and won by a straight-away amid a gaggle of lapped cars. Great side-by-side racing took place throughout the line-up with plenty of passing for position, a highlight that added an exclamation to Shirley’s dominance out front. Doug Drown and R.J. Conley battled 3/4 of the race for position after the father-son Conley bout ended around lap ten.

The Illinois driver said in victory lane, “I punched a hole in my radiator with about five laps to go, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. I just kept the throttle down and an eye on the gauges.  I have a lot of people to thank and would like to thank the fans for turning out tonight.”

With Babb dropping out of the feature and Unzicker posting a top ten, the points battle on the “Hell Tour” has tightened.

In the Modified main Devin Gilpin jumped out to the early battle with outside pole-sitter Cody Parker.  The duo battled hard ahead of Kenny Johnson and Jackie Boggs.  Boggs reeled in Parker, then Gilpin and began to flex his muscle when at the halfway point, Brandon Ramsey spun and Seth Daniels looped it to avoid contact. Boggs had no time to react and clipped Daniels, bending the front suspension on his D-4 mount.  Gilpin inherited the lead and withstood several late race bids from Dan Ebert to tackle the win.

“I was lucky tonight.  I had a second place car and really hated to see what happened to Jackie Boggs,” said Gilpin.  I came around and saw him crossed-up and couldn’t believe it. I am very fortunate and a blessed young man to be able to drive these race cars each and every night, and tonight to be able to stand here in victory lane.”

Rounding out the top ten were Gilpin, Ebert, Johnson, Jeremy Rayburn, Parker, Philip Bapst, Taylor Cook, Fireball Pinkerton, Adam Colley, and Jacob Poel.

Five cars qualified under the old track record of 15:226, a time set by Kenny Johnson last November. NASCAR’s Kenny Wallace set a new track record of 15:090 in qualifications. (UMP Official Press Release to be released )

In the Racer’s Edge Supplements Street Stock feature event, Evan Seitz led the first three go-rounds before Dean Boyd took the lead.  A three way battle ensued between Boyd, Seitz, and Jamie Adams. Adams took over second then after a restart performed a cross-over move took the lead at the flag stand.

Boyd came back the next lap and led the rest of the way despite having Adams within two car lengths for the duration. Rounding out the finish behind the winning Boyd were Jamie Adams, Evan Seitz, Justin Poling, Dave Landman, Tommy Mossbarger, Adam Jones, Shawn Valenti, Tim Cutler, and Brian McQuay. Hard charger Jamie Adams came from fifth to second.

Kentucky driver Mitchell Fields led the first 11 laps before getting loose in turn number two.  Something appeared to be hampering the handling of Field’s mount, allowing Harley Martin took over to lead the next two laps.  Martin lost the handle on the 14th circuit while leading, reverting back to the 13th circuit and also relegating Fields to the lead.

Fields and Harrison Hall battled the rest of the way, but Fields claimed the win.  Rounding out the line-up were Fields, Hall, Ricky Neace, Harley Martin, Mike Brust, and John Remy.

Saturday night racing returns Saturday, July 19 with a $3,000 to win Late Model special, plus Modifieds, Sport Mods, and Street Stocks.
