The 2014 Lucas Cattle Company ULMA championship season continued last weekend at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri and Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Missouri as Justin Russell and Vance Wilson came away with victories.

Friday at Callaway, 11 drivers made their way to the track for competition with Wilson and Russell fighting their way to the front of their respective heat races to secure front-row starting positions for the main event.

Wilson started the event in usual form as he appeared to be the man to beat; however, something quickly went amiss on his David Miller-owned car and Wilson was relegated to the pits with a DNF. This allowed Justin Russell to take command of the race shortly after an early race restart.

Russell looked strong leading the field as he was on a mission to take his first ULMA victory since September of 2011 at Callaway Raceway. Earlier in the evening, Russell’s older Brother, and two-time Lucas Cattle Company ULMA champion, Jason Russell, took a nasty ride in his USRA Modified during heat race action, later going to the hospital after flipping multiple times.

Third-starting Chris Lapp raced his way closer and closer to Russell as the laps wound down and eventually Lapp took command of the event using the low side to make the pass while Russell stayed within striking distance in the closing laps. Meanwhile, eighth-starting Cody Holtkamp raced his way to the top three but time ran out on his charge to the front, leaving Lapp and Russell to battle it out for the win. Russell regained composure and drove back around Lapp and ultimately collected his second-career ULMA victory.

At the finish, Lapp held on for second ahead of Holtkamp. Zeke Langley was fourth with Todd McCoin fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Chris Cox, Jon Binning, Ryan Petersheim, Daryl Dooling, and Wilson.

There are just two more Friday events planned at Callaway Raceway this season. Racing resumes Friday night. For more information, visit the track online at www.callawayraceways.com or call 573-592-7795 or 573-642-6580 for details. Gates open at 5:00 with Hot Laps at 7, and racing at 7:30.

Finally, Mother Nature spared the action at Randolph County Raceway (RCR) in Moberly, Missouri as 13 drivers competed throughout the night. Heat-race wins went to Vance Wilson and Cody Holtkamp. Wilson and Holtkamp began the main event as a result of their wins with Chris Lapp and David Melloway close behind.

From the onset, Quincy, Illinois driver Wilson shot out to an early race lead in front of Holtkamp and Melloway. Lapp was unable to hold on to a top-five run as he ultimately slid to sixth in the final rundown. Eleventh-starting Kenny Mudd made his way inside the top five by race end, one spot behind another advancing driver, Ryan Petersheim, who started in tenth.

Even a late caution flag that slowed and bunched up the field for a restart due to an incident involving Zeke Langley could not prevent Wilson from collecting his sixth win of the year. Holtkamp eventually finished second followed by Melloway, Petersheim, and Mudd. Lapp, Terry Gallaher, Larry Winn, Trent Everhart, and Richard Kimberling completed the top ten. It was later learned that Langley did incur some injuries after contact with the back stretch wall. ULMA would like to wish both Langley and Jason Russell speedy recoveries from their weekend incidents.

RCR will not be racing this weekend but will return to life the following Saturday, August 16. For more information, visit www.randolphcountyraceway.com or call the track Phone at 660-833-1727. Four ULMA points-earning events remain on the RCR schedule for this season.

ULMA action takes one more weekend off at Lucas Oil Speedway as the track hosts special-events racing again this weekend. ULMA racing returns Saturday, August 16. Visit www.lucasoilspeedway.com for information or call the track hotline at (417) 282-5984. Four ULMA-sanctioned events remain on the Lucas Oil Speedway schedule.

In the season long championship battle, Dwight Niehoff continues to lead the way, just in front of former point’s leader Chris Cox. Payton Looney, Zeke Langley, and Jake Williams are all within striking distance inside the top five and with the lone points-earning event Friday night at Callaway Raceway; drivers will be in search of valuable end-of-season points as they discard previous sub-par points-earning nights.
