(Warrensburg, MO) Near-perfect temperatures greeted drivers and fans at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) Saturday evening as the track kicked off its annual Labor Day weekend special events with the first of two straight nights of competition.
A total of 67 competitors checked in for competition among the five competing classes, which included 23 USRA Modifieds, 16 Street Stocks, 6 Pure Stocks, 10 ULMA Late Models, and 12 Lightning Sprints. All total, fans in the stands witnessed 16 events throughout the night.
USRA Modifieds headlined the evening with the first of two ‘Twin $1,500-to-Win’ 35-lap feature events of the weekend and it was USRA National Point’s Leader Terry Schultz of Sedalia who powered his way to the front of the field to claim the night one main event. In Street Stock action, Brett Wood took his ninth feature win of the year while Jason Ryun of Kansas City, Missouri drove to his second-consecutive win in Pure Stock action. Non-sanctioned Lightning Sprints made their final appearance of the year at CMS a good one with Phil Heavelow picking up the victory while Jon Binning of Warrensburg captured the ULMA Late Model win.
Pure Stocks kicked off the evening with their preliminary heat race. Darrin Christy Started out the night with a heat race win ahead of last week’s winner Jason Ryun and Lee Scott to setup the main event lineup. Christy and Ryun started on the front row of the ten-lap main event with Ryun quickly shooting out to an early race lead. Christy hounded Ryun through the early stages as Scott’s night came to an early end with mechanical woes. The entire race distance was the Fox and the Hound story as Christy pursued Ryun all throughout the race. Don Johnson stayed solidly in third with Leroy Morrison fourth. In the end, Ryun captured his second straight win in the Pure Stocks with Christy settling for second, Johnson third, Morrison fourth, Robbie Sullins fifth and Lee Scott sixth.
The Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Models took to the track next in two exciting heat races. Two-time track champion Jon Binning drove to the win in heat one ahead of Payton Looney and Michael Weir of Kansas City. In heat two, Lockwood, Missouri’s Dwight Niehoff claimed the win. The feature event lined up with Binning and Niehoff taking the initial green flag from the front row.
Early on, Binning set a torrid pace as drivers settled in for the 20-lap race. Niehoff never let Binning out of his sights and stayed close through lapped traffic with Looney running solidly in third. Some of the best racing came from Todd McCoin, Ryan Petersheim, and Lane Ehlert before the halfway point at lap ten. With Binning and Niehoff in lapped traffic, things got a little dicey for Binning as he left the door open for Niehoff in the closing laps. Off of turn two, the pair split lapped cars and Niehoff shot out front.
With just two laps remaining, Binning fought hard to stay with the new leader and maneuvered his way around the track on the low side with Niehoff in the middle lane. On the white flag lap, Binning found a fast line and pulled even with Niehoff on the back straightaway to setup up a final turn three and four sprint to the finish. Coming off of turn four, the pair were dead even with Binning ultimately narrowly outgunning Niehoff for his third win over the year during the caution-free event. In victory lane, Binning said “Dwight is so clean to race with and it’s a lot of fun when it’s like that, I’ve got a lot of people here tonight including my Mom and Dad so this was a special night.” Niehoff finished second with Looney third. Todd McCoin was fourth, Ryan Petersheim fifth, Lane Ehlert sixth, Greg Clemmons seventh, and Chris Cox eighth.
Lightning Sprints were next in the running order for two preliminary heat races. Beau Heavelow of Sibley, Missouri was victorious in heat one ahead of A.J. Tice and Mark Billings. For heat race number two, Phil Heavelow captured the win ahead of CMS veteran Bobby Lane and M.K. Billings.
The Heavelow’s owned the front row for the start of the non-sanctioned lightning sprint main event and from the drop of the green flag, Buckner, Missouri’s Phil Heavelow shot out to an early race lead with Beau Heavelow and A.J. Tice in tow. The drivers were on their A-game as the field raced through a blistering pace throughout the 20-lap main event.
Even through heavy lapped traffic and a lightning-fast surface, Phil Heavelow stayed comfortably in the lead ahead of Beau Heavelow. Tice stayed comfortably in third with Mark Billings in pursuit in fourth. As the laps wound down, it was evident something drastic would have to happen to keep Phil Heavelow from victory lane once again at CMS. In the end, Phil Heavelow captured his second-straight Lightning Sprint win in a race that ran caution free for 20 laps with Beau Heavelow finishing second just ahead of A.J. Tice with her best finish at CMS this season. Mark Billings recovered from early night mechanical issues and came up to finish fourth, with M.K. Billings and Ryan Kent rounding out the top six.
Street Stocks made their way to the track for their two heat races as the exciting action continued. Heat race winners included Warrensburg driver Brett Wood ahead of Marc Carter and Jermiah Wilson in heat one and John Clancy out of California, Missouri over Bobby Raybourn and Brett Cox in heat two.
Brett Wood and John Clancy started the action for the Street Stocks in row one with Marc Carter and Bobby Raybourn just behind. Earlier in the night the Lightning Sprints and ULMA Late Models went green to checkers and it looked like the Street Stocks would do the same. Wood grabbed the early lead with Clancy and Carter in pursuit as the race ran caution free until lap 14.
With what was the one and only caution flag during the event waving over the field six laps shy of the finish, Wood again held point over Carter, Clancy, and Allen Perryman. Wood again distanced himself from the rest of the field as Carter and Clancy ran strong in second and third. Meanwhile, ninth-starting Jay Prevete had a successful return to CMS as he made his way into the top five. Ultimately, Wood was again too strong for the rest of the field as he captured his ninth main event win of the year. Carter settled for second with Clancy coming away third. Prevete moved up to fourth at the finish with Perryman holding on for fifth, Clayton Campbell sixth, Brian Ziegler seventh, and Brett Cox eighth.
Finishing up the night’s preliminary action was USRA Modified drivers competing in four 10-lap prelims to determine the passing points order, which ultimately built up to the top 8 redraw to set the front four rows of the night’s main event. The first heat race went to Dean Wille over the travelling Father and Son tandem of Bob Timm and Jake Timm of Winona, Minnesota.
Heat number two belonged to former champions of the Modified class at CMS as Jason Thompson claimed the win ahead of Terry Schultz and Aaron Marrant. For heat three, former CMS feature winner Justin Johnson drove to the win over Tim Karrick and a returning Shad Badder. For the final heat race, Quincy, Illinois’ Robbie Reed picked up the win over Fulton, Missouri’s Kevin Blackburn and last week’s feature winner, Dustin Boney.
The top eight passing-points earners, which included Wille, Thompson, Johnson, Reed, Karrick, Bob Timm, Blackburn, and Schultz, re-drew for their 35-lap main event starting positions. Karrick drew the number one starting position with Kevin Blackburn, Son of two-time CMS Modified Champion, Gary Blackburn, Jr., to the outside at the drop of the green flag for the main event.
Karrick led the field to the green with a strong running Blackburn side-by-side for many of the opening laps. After a rough start and a few black-flag warnings to various drivers, things seemed to settle down just a bit as drivers were eager to make their way to the finish and gain valuable spots in the solid paying race.
Blackburn was strong on the high side with Karrick mostly running low. Robbie Reed and Dean Wille faded early on with Reed coming out on the worst end of contact and ultimately suffering a cut tire, only to have his crew make quick repairs so he could return to the track in time to make it back out on the field as the race resumed. Meanwhile, Bob Timm began charging to the front and blasted into the top three with Schultz and Jason Thompson also in the mix.
In what turned out to be a fantastic race with some of the strongest USRA drivers battling hard for positions, Timm continued his charge to the front chasing Schultz, who pressured and eventually took the lead from Blackburn who slipped to third. A few laps later, Timm darted out front on the low side. Soon after, Schultz switched lines and moved to the low side to keep Timm in close quarters. Timm looked like he was going to sail onto the victory as he and Schultz were the class of the field.
Aaron Marrant came to life from his eleventh starting spot and broke into the top three late in the race and added his name to the possible list of winners. Timm and Schultz ran close until Timm suffered mechanical issues and exited the track with just a few laps remaining. With the drivers now in a good rhythm, Schultz took command with Marrant in second and twelfth-starting Shad Badder blasting through the field to come all the way to third.
As the white flag flew, Schultz hugged the low line with Marrant close behind as Schultz ultimately led to his National USRA point’s lead with the victory over Marrant. Badder capped off a nice charge into the top three in third with Blackburn recording his best-ever CSM finish in fourth. Dustin Boney had an up and down night but still came away with a top five with Jason Thompson sixth, Tylyer Schmidt, seventh and Karrick eighth. Chad Lyle was ninth followed by Justin Johnson in tenth.
CMS kicks right back into high gear on Sunday, August 31 for the second-straight night of action to close out the Labor Day weekend with ‘Open Wheel Madness’ night, featuring another $1500-to-Win USRA Modified main event, a $1500-to-win USRA Sanctioned B-Mod main event, plus Mod Lites and the W.A.R. Sprint Car Series in their final appearances at CMS this year.
Admission prices for Sunday include: Adults $15, Senior Citizens 65+ and Active Duty Military w/I.D. $12, Kids aged 6 to 12 years $5, Children five and under are free. Pit passes are $30 each night.
There are no track registration fees; however, Modified and B-mod drivers MUST have a USRA license or purchase $10 temporary license. For B-Mods the entry fee is $50 if the driver has raced twice at CMS during a regular weekly race program PRIOR to this event. If the driver has not raced twice PRIOR to this event at CMS during a regular weekly race program, entry is $75. Entry fees includes driver pit pass.

Same night entries are available in ALL competing classes throughout the weekend, there is no “pre-entry” for any competing class.
Mod Lites and WAR Sprint Car competitors will draw for their starting positions and compete in heat races and additional preliminary events as needed. Mod Lites will line up by passing points earned in the heat races, with the driver earning the most passing points starting on pole position of the main event. WAR Sprint Car series drivers will line up and use their normal protocols for competition throughout the night.
Rain date for the weekend is Monday, September 1, with one hour earlier start times. Primitive camping is permitted at CMS; however, there is no dumpsite. Campfires are allowed only in fire pits. All personnel on the speedway ground are responsible for their own disposal of waste items and will be held accountable for their actions!
No track points will be awarded in any classes this weekend; however, USRA Modifieds will compete for National USRA points on both Saturday and Sunday while USRA B-Modified drivers will earn National USRA points on Sunday night during their $1500-to-win special event. ULMA competitors will earn ULMA points, W.A.R. Sprint Car drivers will earn series points.

For the remainder of the season, CMS is taking canned and boxed good food collections as well as clothing in good repair for donations to local charities for the less fortunate. Fall and Winter-time clothing has been requested from our community partners as cooler weather will soon settle in over the area. Look for donation drop boxes in the main foyer on the front side, on the pit side, donations may be dropped off in the office.
