POWRiMacon, IL. – Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana won the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series portion of the 2014 Dana Godfrey Memorial at the high-banked 1/5th mile Macon Speedway in Macon, Illinois. Nathan Benson of Concordia, Missouri brought home his 12th career win in the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series.

Devin Feger of Marquette Heights, Illinois drove a stellar show to claim his first career POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series feature win in the make-up feature for the rained out April 26th, 2014 event. Zach Daum of Pocahontas, Illinois started on the outside of the front row and checked out, bringing home his second POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series victory of the 2014 season in the make-up feature for the midgets.

April 26th, 2014 Make-Up Show

At the drop of the green flag, Zach Daum would jump out front to lead the first lap with pole-sitter Justin Peck of Monrovia, Indiana close behind. Driving the Daum Crop Insurance-sponsored, Toyota-powered Eagle Chassis, Daum’s run would be slowed as the red flag would come out on lap six for the flipping machine of Daniel Adler after Chett Gehrke made contact with Adler in turns one and two. Adler would be alright, but done for the evening as he climbed out of his heavily damaged car.

With the field lined back up, Daum would lead Justin Peck and Austin Brown of Millstadt, Illinois to the green. Daum would take off leaving Peck, Parker Price-Miller and Brown to battle it out as Darren Hagen and Bryan Clauson worked their way towards the front. When the checkered flag flew, it would be Daum leading the way, followed by Bryan Clauson in second and Darren Hagen in third, rounding out the top three. Coming in fourth was Justin Peck and rounding out the top five was Austin Brown.

“The championship; that’s the big picture here,” stated Zach Daum. That’s what Toyota wants us to do and we’re trying to deliver it. We sure haven’t won as many races as we would like to this year. But, I can’t thank these guys enough. They make my job easy.”

Driving the Turner Racing, Kawasaki-powered Hyper Chassis, Devin Feger of Marquette Heights, Illinois brought home his first career POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series feature win. “I don’t know what to say,” explained a clearly overjoyed Feger. “I ran through the middle, no one was trying to go there, so I figured I’d try it and it sure worked!”

September 6th, 2014 Dana Godfrey Memorial

POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series drivers who had competed in the make-up feature portion of the night set out to test their endurance in another 30 lap feature. At the drop of the green flag, pole-sitter Colten Cottle of Kansas, Illinois took off around the top to lead lap one. With two laps in the books, Cottle’s pace would be slowed as Austin Brown looped it coming off turn two, while Shane Cottle slowed on the backstretch.

When the field resumed racing, Colton Cottle would lead the field back to the green in the Cottle Flooring-sponsored, Esslinger-powered DRC, only to have the caution brought back out again one lap later by the spinning machine of Tyler Robbins off turn three. When Cottle led the field back to green, Robbins would spin again, this time off turn two. After the field took the green again, with four laps in the books, Cottle and Justin Grant would dual for the lead, sliding each other in typical Macon Speedway fashion. But, one short lap later, the yellow flag would fly again as Andrew Felker, Chett Gehrke, Justin Peck, Parker Price-Miller, and Spencer Bayston became entangled entering turn one.

Under yellow, Justin Grant would inherit the lead as Colton Cottle pulled in due to mechanical woes, ending his bid for the win. On lap 11, Parker Price-Miller spun in turn three, while Tyler Robbins spun off turn four collecting Jake Neuman. When Grant led the field to green again, he would do everything in his power to hold off Bryan Clauson to no avail, as Clauson would take over the lead on lap 15.

With Clauson comfortably out front, Darren Hagen would slip into second two laps later, but on lap 20 the red would come out as Shane Cottle got upside down collecting Tyler Robbins and David Budres. All drivers were alright, but damage to Robbins’ and Budres’ machines was enough to force both drivers to the infield. When yellow flag conditions resumed and cars pushed back off, Clauson would lead the field back to green and never be deterred. Following Clauson to the line was Darren Hagen in second and Justin Grant rounding out the podium in third. Coming in fourth was Zach Daum and completing the top five was Andy Malpocker.

“It was an awesome race,” said 2014 Dana Godfrey Memorial Champion Bryan Clauson. “I didn’t think me and the thirty-five were ever going to stop trading sliders. We certainly had the fastest racecar. We’ve been really good every time we’ve had it out recently. I can’t thank my crew enough for giving me the opportunity to drive such a great racecar. And I can’t say enough about the track crew tonight. What a great racetrack with two different shows ran on it and being racey right there until the end.”

“Were not worried about points, we just want to win races and put on a show for the fans,” said runner-up Darren Hagen. “This team is one of the best teams to drive for and we have fun driving up and down the road. I’m real proud to be a part of this team.”

“We had some good, hard racing up there with the leaders,” stated third place finisher Justin Grant. “This 35 was a rocket, especially the first half of the race. But, we got a little tight when the track rubbered up and couldn’t quite hang with those guys.”

Nathan Benson of Concordia, Missouri overtook pole-sitter Luke Verardi of Taylorville, Illinois on lap three, powering into the lead and running away with his fourth win of the 2014 season. “We’ve had a really rough season,” said Benson. “We’re going to have our work cut out for us for the rest of the year, but we got a little momentum going here at the right time, so we’ll see if we can’t steal this thing like we did last year.”

“I knew it was rubber from the start and we were setup for a rubber down track,” explained second place finisher Matt Howard. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow at Belleville, it’s always fun there.”

“That’s our first POWRi podium and the car was perfect tonight,” said third place finisher Nick Howard. I realized the track was taking rubber and moved the wing back and took off. I can’t thank my dad and uncle enough.”
