ARDMORE, Okla.-Stormy Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., drew first blood Thursday night as the United States Modified Touring Series kicked off the first of three nights at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway for the inaugural Halloween Havoc.
After a dominating heat race where he took the checkered flag with nearly a full straight-away cushion over Clyde Dunn Jr., Rodney Sanders and Jason Hughes, it was clear that ‘The New Mexico Nightmare’ would be the man to beat in the main event.

Drawing the seventh starting spot for the 30-lap feature gave his competition some hope, but it didn’t last long.

Polesitter Jeremy Payne bolted out to the lead at the drop of the green flag but 2014 USMTS Rookie of the Year Cade Dillard ran him down and seized the lead the next time around.

But Dillard’s lead was short-lived too as Scott came roaring to the front and took control on lap 4.

Nine-time USMTS National Champion briefly held the runner-up spot before giving that position back to Dillard with 10 laps in the books.

Payne fought back to move into second with 22 laps complete but Sanders, who started 11th and won the last race at the 3/8-mile clay oval by more than eight seconds earlier this season, moved around Payne to slip into second with six laps to go.

The reigning USMTS National Champion reeled in Scott but was never able to mount a serious bid for the top spot, eventually settling for second place behind Scott.

The win, worth $2,000, was the third for Scott in his last four trips to the Southern Oklahoma Speedway, and stretched his late-season momentum after winning the Widow Wax USRA Fall Nationals just two weeks ago at his home town Southern New Mexico Speedway.

Dillard held on for third ahead of Shryock and Payne rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Jake Gallardo, Hughes, Grant Junghans, Tyler Townsend and Scott’s teammate, Bryan Rowland.

The stars and cars of the USMTS will be back in action Friday and Saturday, racing for $3,000 and $4,000 to win, respectively.

With Friday night’s event falling on Halloween, the youngsters are invited to do their trick-or-treating at the racetrack from 5-6 p.m. where the pit area will be filled with race teams at the ready with candy and other goodies for the kids in costumes.

Limited Modifieds will also be on the racing card the next two nights.

Special frighteningly low pricing is in place for Friday night with adults grandstand tickets just $15 while kids and seniors are $10. However, all kids in costumes get in for free on Friday. On Saturday, adults get in for $20 while kids ages 6-12 and seniors are just $15. Pit passes are $35 Friday and $40 Saturday.

The Southern Oklahoma Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 0.7 mile east of I-35 (exit 29) on US 70, then 1.8 miles south on US 77. For more information call 405-627-1766 or click www.southernoklahomaspeedway.com to visit the track’s official website.
