January 14, 2015, Tucson, Ariz. After showing flashes of dominance on the opening weekend of the 2015 Keyser Manufacturing Wild West Shootout, Jason Krohn was left with little to show for his efforts. The Slayton, MN racer jumped out to a dominating lead on Sunday night only to see a mechanical gremlin take him out before five laps could be run. On this night however, the sixth starting Krohn was not to be denied as he wheels his Krohn Farms, MB Custom to the USRA modified win.
Dave Mass and Joey Moriarty would bring the field of 24 to green and wage a spirited duel early until Moriarty settled in the top spot carrying over his impressive run from his heat race. Krohn meanwhile was charging getting past Mike Sterns, two-time winner on the week and current points leader Jake Gallardo, and Brad Diercks before setting his sights on the two leaders.
It wasn’t long before Krohn was up-on-the-wheel and working the USA Raceway cushion as he quickly tracked down and moved past Mass & Moriarty to grab the lead. Using the high side to keep up his momentum, Krohn opened-up a comfortable margin on the great race that was developing for the second and third.
Fourth row starters Ryan Gustin and Chase Junghans were locked together and moving through the field at a rapid pace. The young racers from Iowa and Kansas waged a spirited battle in their attempts to catch Krohn but neither had anything for the race leader as Gustin would hold off Junghans for the runner-up spot at the checkers. Gustin, would had to change engines in both is modified and late model after the weekend, backed-up his Saturday night run that ultimately ended in disappointment when his engine let go while leading.
Mass would come home in the fourth position continuing his streak of impressive runs in the his Don Shaw owned 42s and first time visitor in 2015 Alex Stanford garnered a top-five position after starting in the seventh spot. Moriarty would slip back to sixth in the final rundown followed by Jake Gallardo, Mike Sterns (2014’s Wednesday night victor) Clayton Wagamon, and Ricky Thornton, Jr., rounding out the top ten.
