If there was any doubt that Darrell Lanigan was attending the 2015 Keyser Manufacturing Wild West Shootout and not taking it seriously, that notion was put to rest when the Union, KY driver made an aggressive heat race move to take the win over Billy Moyer, Jr. It was cemented when the eighth starting Lanigan wheeled the Childress Inspection, Childress Fishing & Rentals, Andy Durham Racing Engines, Black Diamond/Club 29 to the lead on lap eleven and charged to his second win of the week and extended his mini-series points lead.
The win also continued the week-long domination for the Black Diamond/Club 29 chassis. The Ronnie Stucky/Darrell Lanigan creation has crossed the finish line first in all four 2015 Wild West Shootout events.
Las Cruses, NM driver Garrett Albertson and Wednesday night Modified winner Jason Krohn would lead the field to green for the 30-lapper. The duo would swap the lead in the opening laps with Alberson nabbing it at the end of lap two. Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth, Clay Daly, and a quick moving Lanigan rounded-out the top five. Rodney Sanders, Billy Moyer, AJ Diemel, Stormy Scott and Tony Jackson completed the top ten.
Wasting no time, Lanigan was up to fourth on lap three and third on lap five. Just ahead, Hollingsworth moved past Krohn for second also on lap four and went to work on Alberson, stealing the race lead on lap seven. Langian came along for the ride and took over second on the same circuit.
Billy Moyer was also charging forward coming up to sixth from tenth on lap five. He then subsequently moved past Sanders for fifth on lap eight and Krohn for fourth on lap nine.
With ten in the books Lanigan was firmly applying the pressure to Hollingsworth as the leaders began to negotiate the back of the field. Alberson and Moyer began contesting the third spot while Sanders and Clay Daly moved past the backsliding Krohn.
As Hollingsworth blasted around the cushion, Lanigan maneuvered through the middle to low line to take-over the number one spot on lap eleven. Both Moyer and Sanders both slipped past Alberson to run third and fourth on lap fifteen.
A little further back in the field, eighteenth starting Ryan Gustin had his foot firmly planted and sat eighth at the halfway mark and moved up to seventh at the two-thirds distance. Back up front Sanders and Moyer were going side by side for several laps in lapped traffic as they began to close on Hollingsworth and Lanigan.
As the five to go flashed from the flagstand, Lanigan’s margin was beginning to shrink as Moyer closed in for second. He would pull the pass on for the runner-up spot on lap twenty-nine while Gustin moved to sixth.
Heading into turn three for the final time, Hollingsworth jumped the cushion allowing Sanders to claim third and set-up a drag race with Gustin for fourth. Hollingsworth would nip Gustin at the line as Lanigan, Moyer, and Sanders streaked to the podium.
