kentucky-lake-motor-speedwayCALVERT CITY, Kentucky – Survival was the key in Saturday’s Summit Racing Equipment AMS Modified feature, with only seven of 30 starters seeing the checkered flag wave.
However, all the carnage was in the rear-view mirror of Brian Shaw, who led from start to finish to claim the $4,000 first-place prize money.

Shaw, of Robinson, Illinois, finished a half-second ahead of Josh Harris, who was gunning for his second straight victory at KLMS, with Trent Young third.

Hometown driver Tait Davenport of Benton, Kentucky, won his second in a row in the Crate Late Model main event.

Other feature winners on the evening’s program of racing in five divisions included Charles LaPlant in Late Model, Chad Boone in Stock Car and Randy Swift in Pure Stock.

In the Modified main event, scheduled for 40 laps but cut to 35, several yellow flags waved and four cars were retired before the first green-flag lap was completed. The race was stopped numerous times for other incidents and one red flag was waved when Brent Glastetter flipped in Turns 3-4. Glastetter was not injured.

Each time, Shaw managed to pull away on the restart, although Harris gave furious chase in the late laps, nipping at the leader’s rear bumper.

Tyler Nicely was fourth, followed by Cory Daugherty.

LaPlant got his first Late Model win in a duel with Jason Riggs. The two tangled on the second lap of the 20-lap race, and Riggs went spinning on the front straightaway. He recovered from the spin and ended up third.

Tim Brown took the runner-up spot, with Jarryd Holshouser fourth, Tim Mevert fifth and Allen Christy sixth in the short field.

Davenport took the early lead over Brent Lewis and paced the field all the way in the 20-lap Crate feature. Ronnie Cooper got past Lewis for second, with Adam Ray and Kevin Poole rounding out the top five.

In the Stock Car feature, Boone got the lead from Dale Nelson, who led the first seven laps, and commanded the rest of the way in the 12-lap race. Bradley Hobbs, Brian Worley and Wyatt Hill were third through fifth.

Swift took his first-ever feature win in the Pure Stock event, leading from start to finish. Phillip Byard was second, followed by Mike Watson, Mike Welch and Lisa Wadley.

Racing continues at KLMS on Saturday night, April 25, with a special feature for Crate Late Model competitors paying $2,500 to the winner. Also on the program will be races for Late Model, Modified, Stock Car and Pure Stock drivers.
