By Jimmy Dearing – Pontoon Beach, IL (March 25th, 2016) For the first time in the twelve year history of the Gundaker’s ownership of Tri-City Speedway, they got their season opening race in on the original scheduled date. A solid field of cars field the pit area in all five divisions.

Eighteen of the area’s best UMP DIRTcar Late Models were on hand. Michael Kloos of Trenton, IL would find victory lane after a hard fought battle with Jeff Herzog. Herzog jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green flag using his front row outside starting spot. Kloos settled into the second spot and chased Herzog for the first nine laps. Kloos would get past Herzog for the lead on lap ten, but Herzog would keep the pressure on Kloos for the lead throughout the remaining fifteen laps. But Kloos would pick up the season opening victory. Herzog would finish a close second. Tim Manville would get third after a tough start to the night. Manville would break a transmission on the first lap of qualifying, but his team would get repairs made and he was able to battle through the field for third. Defending track champion, Billy Laycock would bring home a fourth place finish while Jim Shereck rounded out the top five.

The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds once again put on a fantastic battle during their feature event. Three different drivers would lead the feature at some point, but it was defending track champion Michael Long picking up the victory. Indiana’s Levi Kissinger took the lead at the green flag ahead of Kenny Wallace. It didn’t take long for Kentucky’s Tyler Nicely to move in and battle with Kissinger for the top spot. Then just a few laps later, Michael Long would join them to make it a three way battle for the top spot. The three of them would battle for several laps for the top spot before Long would take command on lap ten. Long would pace the field the remaining ten laps to get the win. Dean Hoffman would battle his way to the front from a mid-pack starting spot to claim the second spot. Nicely would take third with Rick Conoyer coming home fourth. Dave Wietholder would round out the top five. Kissinger would jump the cushion on a late race restart and fell all the way back to finish ninth.

Danny Ems would take the lead at the drop of the green flag in the B-Modified feature and hold off all challengers enroute to the win. Ems biggest challenge came on a late race restart when Craig Bessinger pulled even with him for the lead down the back stretch. Bessinger would get into turns three and four way too hot and smoked the outside wall exiting turn four which then turned his car headon into the front stretch wall. The rest of the field was able to avoid contact with Bessinger in the aftermath. Ems would go on to get the win. Chris Bolyard was battling Tommie Seets, Jr. for second on the last lap, but Bolyard would spin in turn three collecting fourth place Tim Hancock. In the end Tommie Seets, Jr would finish second, followed by Trey Harris, Jeff LeBaube and BJ Seets to complete the top five.

Brent Weaver would get the win the Street Stock division. Weaver got past early leader Jason Walsh and powered away to get the win. AJ Cline would get past Walsh for the second spot on a late race restart and come home second. Walsh would take third, with Danny O’Dell and Cody Peter rounding out the top five.

Jeremy Callahan would hold off the challenges of Dallas Lugge to win the Sport Compact feature. The two of them battle for almost the entire distance of the feature for the lead. Sean McCarty would take third while Josh Callahan was fourth and Cole Queathem fifth. After winning his heat race, David Bolyard would go for spectacular flip early in the main event. He would walk away from the crash uninjured.
