(Warrensburg, MO) Central Missouri Speedway’s Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce Night at the Races drew a solid crowd to the grandstands for competition in USRA Modified, Street Stock, B-Mod, and Pure Stock competition. All total, 69 drivers competed throughout the night in the four divisions.

Pure Stocks began the night with their qualifying heat races with 16 drivers on hand in this continually growing car class. Jason Ryun outran Don Johnson and Gary Akers in heat one, Jimmy Smith bested Scott Martin and Darrin Christy in heat two, while defending Pure Stock champion, Jeremiah Wilson, raced to the win in the third heat over Rodger Detherage and Jason Burden.

B-Mods were next to hit the stage for three heat races ran for the 18 drivers on hand. Cody Frazon outlasted Bill Small and Johnny McGinnis in heat one. Last year’s champion, Jacob Ebert, crossed the checkers ahead of Dean Wille and Don Marrs in heat two, while sixth-starting Curtis Berry claimed heat three over Terry Wilburn and Bobby Russell.

Brett Wood picked up right where he left off last year on his quest to defend his Street Stock dominance by claiming head ahead of Brian Inlow and Clayton Campbell. Jay Prevete of Windsor, Missouri claimed heat two over Brian Eckhoff and Darren Phillips.

The ‘Mighty’ Modifieds were last to hit the track for their qualifying heat races with Steve Twenter pulling off a huge win over Tim Karrick and Tyler Shaw. Kevin Blackburn claimed the second heat race over Donnie Fellers and Lewis Jackson, while Shad Badder flew the checkers in heat three over Gunner Martin and Nathan Vaughn.

Main events closed out the night and the Pure Stocks were the first division to take to the track for their featured race. Jason Ryun and Jimmy Smith set the pass early as Ryun ultimately come out with the early race lead. On lap four, the first caution flag flew for Derek Williams. When the race resumed Ryun sat atop the standings with Smith, Detherage, Johnson, and Akers. On lap seven, the caution appeared again for Williams and the car of Rob Gard. For the restart, Ryun continued to lead the vent until a lap-10 caution flew.

After the final restart, Darrin Christy made things interesting in the race’s final stages as he closed in on race-long leader Ryun but had to settle for second at the end of the night with Ryun grabbing the first Pure Stock main event of the year. Christy, Smith, Detherage, Akers, and Jeremiah Wilson. Unfortunately, Smith’s car did not pass technical inspection and was disqualified from the events final rundown leaving the official finish as Ryun, Christy, Detherage, Akers, Wilson, and Don Johnson.

B-Mods hit the track next for their 15-lap main event. Curtis Berry and Jacob Ebert led the field of 18 to the initial green flag with Cody Frazon and Bill Small close behind. Terry Wilburn encountered a spin on lap four while solidly running inside the top five while not long after Johnny McGinnis and Dean Wille also encountered misfortune not long after, although Wille later returned after his UCM/SAE pit crew changed a tire allowing him to return to the race.

Ebert led Frazon, Berry, Marrs and Brill at this point in the race as Jason Reeves’ night ended with an excursion off the turn four area. A lap later, the caution flew again for debris on the speedway with Ebert still leading Berry and Frazon. Last year’s champion Jacob Ebert was too much to handle on this night as he marched to his first win of the season. Behind Ebert were Berry, with his best-ever CMS finish along with Frazon in third, Marrs fourth, and Brill sixth.

Brett Wood and Jay Prevete began the main event at the front of the field with Brian Inlow and Brian Eckhoff in tow. Wood shot out to an early race lead while Prevete did all he could to keep Wood within his grasp. A few cars suffered mechanical woes on opening night. Brian Inlow’s night came to a crashing to a halt with an encounter with the lapped machine of Nick Engelhardt. Both drivers were unable to continue.

Jason Ryun, who also won in the Pure Stick division earlier in the night, wasn’t so lucky in his Street Stock as a left rear flat tire ended his bid for a solid top-three run. Wood cruised to an easy victory over Prevete, Eckhoff, Campbell, Darren Phillips, and Wilson to round out the top six.

The night closed with a 25-lap Modified Main Event. Kevin Blackburn and Sedalia, Missouri driver Steve Twenter started the night up front to lead the field to green after a couple of false starts slowed the event. Blackburn and Badder had a whale of a battle near the front for the entire race distance and also while in the lead. Just when everyone thought it would be a Blackburn/Badder duel to the finish, Gunner Martin blasted around both drivers on the low side off turn two.

Travis Ruff drew a caution early in the event as Martin continued to leave Badder, Lewis Jackson, and Tyler Shaw. Former USRA National Champion Matt Dotson was an early retiree as was Matt Plumb. A lap 8 caution involved Nick Pence, Small, Wille, David Wood, and Jimmy Eaton. Martin led the fast-paced field to the green while keeping a short time later another caution flew a lap later for the 1x car of Matt Johnson and #68 Dean Wille. Additional cautions flew on 9, 14, and 15.

In the end, it was Martin, who stepped up his game from last season grabbing a huge victory of Badder, Blackburn, thirteen-starting Terry Schultz, Karrick, and Tyler Schmidt. All classes return again next weekend for University of Central Missouri (UCM) race night. All UCM students with a valid student I.D. will receive $5 for the grandstands.
