(Warrensburg, Mo) Week two of the 2016 race season produced exciting racing for fans throughout the evening on University of Central Missouri race night at CMS. Matt Johnson of Archie, Missouri claimed the USRA Modified feature for his first victory the season. The B-Mod feature had Stephen Muilenburg from Sparta, Missouri competing against a tough field of drivers for his feature win. Brian ‘Ziggy’ Ziegler of Bates City, Missouri took home his first CMS feature win this season in the Street Stocks while Jason Ryun from Kansas City grabbed his second feature in a row in the Pure Stock division.

Pure Stocks opened the heat racing action night with 16 drivers checked in for competition. Jason Ryun grabbed the first heat win in front of Jeremiah Wilson and Jimmy Smith. In heat two, Byron Glotzbach claimed the win with Derek Williams and Jason Ballard following. Heat three had Darrin Christy flying the checkers over Gary Akers and Rob Gard.

The Pure Stock feature event started with Glotzbach as the early race leader with Ryun in close pursuit. Glotzbach had Ryun and Gary Akers attempting to work around him for the lead. Derek Williams was in the top five when he spun off of turn four on lap six. Finally, Ryun made his move to the front and never looked back. In the end Ryun crossed the line for his second victory with Glotzbach second, Darrin Christy third, followed by Gary Akers and Roger Detherage. In post-race technical inspection, Glotzbach’s car did not meet rules specifications and he was disqualified from the finish.

B-Mod drivers had another chance to test their skills with a competitive field of 19 drivers checked in. During the three qualifying heat races, Curtis Berry won the initial heat race ahead of Cody Brill and Ernie Walker. Kaleb Bray was just ahead of Stephen Muilenburg and Cody Frazon for the win in the second heat. Troy Carlyle crossed the finish line first ahead of Jacob Ebert and Dean Wille for the victory in heat three.

The B-Mod main event began with Muilenburg and Brill charging hard into the first turn as Muilenburg emerged with the lead with Brill stopping on the track with a flat tire. He was able to change the tire and return to racing. Jacob Ebert then made his presence known as he stalked Muilenburg for the remainder of the race. Troy Carlyle tangled in turn two with Leroy Morrison but never came to a complete stop and was able to return to his third-place spot in the race. Muilenburg was steady to the end and crossed the line ahead of Ebert. Carlyle finished third with Chad Staus coming from 13th to fourth and Dean Wille rounding out the top five.

In the Street Stocks division, drivers tuned their setups again this week to figure out a way around Warrensburg driver Brett Wood, who started the season in victory lane last weekend. The two heat race winners included Brian Inlow in the first heat ahead of Warren Hawthorne and Jeremiah Wilson. Brian Ziegler claimed the second and final heat race with Brett Wood and Clayton Campbell following.

As the green flag flew for the feature start, Ziegler dashed into first turn on the initial lap. Wood and Campbell worked behind him looking for an advantage. Ziegler pulled away on lap nine but a caution for Hawthorne bunched up the field for the restart. Ziegler kept Wood and Campbell behind him and eventually went on to claim his first win after working on the car until the early hours. Campbell drove his way past Wood into second as Wood settled for third. Brain Eckhoff worked his way up from tenth on the grid to a fourth-place finish. Robert Brown made his first night a racing in six years a memorable one with a fifth place finish.

This week the fans were entertained to close-quarters racing action in the highly competitive USRA Modified heat races as drivers attempted to maximize passing points with their heat race finishes. Shad Badder edged Brian Johnson and Eddie Bray, Jr., in heat one. Tim Karrick crossed the line ahead of Matt Johnson and Terry Schultz in heat two. The final heat of the night had Darron Fuqua taking the checkers in front of Kevin Blackburn and Gunner Martin.

The USRA modifieds once again showed their skills on the multi-grooved and smooth surface as Shad Badder led the early portion of the 25-lap feature. Brian Johnson and Kevin Blackburn battled early up front in the top three. Tim Karrick was also in the mix in the top five along with Darron Fuqua utilizing the high side of the track. Matt Johnson then started his move to the front also using the high side to eventually grab the lead on lap 11 and held on until the end. Terry Schultz’s car slowed on the restart on turn four, which led to some chain reaction damage for Dean Wille, who had to leave the race with heavy damage. When the race returned to green-flag conditions, the side-by-side, lap-after-lap battles were intense among drivers inside the top five as Badder, Matt Johnson, Blackburn, Fuqua, and Chad Lyle raced inside the top five.

Johnson proved to be resilient as the double checkers flew when he drove into victory lane with a well-deserved USRA feature win, his first at CMS this year. Badder hung onto second while Blackburn edged out Fuqua at the line for a tight third place finish. Chad Lyle advanced from eleventh on the starting grid to score a solid fifth-place finish.
