For immediate release-

With rain around the Central Missouri area, things looked doubtful, but the owners and personnel at Double-X Speedway were determined to put on a show for the fans that came out to celebrate Mother’s Day, a family tradition on Sunday nights for 27 seasons. With a competitive field of cars on hand a fast track awaited the drivers on hand. It looked that repeat winners would be the order of the evening.

Showing that off season hard work can pay dividends, Cole Henson went two for two in the young season by picking up the victory in the feature event. The fleet red 31c of Henson put on a determined drive on the bottom of the track, holding off the strong challenges of brother Derek Henson who claimed the runner up spot for the second week in a row. John Clancy Jr. recovered from an opening lap bobble and raced back to a strong third place finish at the checker. Dale Berry finished fourth in his first outing at the track this season. Harlan Dowell rounded out the top five. Cole Henson claimed the heat race victory in the division.

In the Hobby Stock class, California, MO driver Rudy Wirts made in two wins on the season and two for his career by passing early race leader Mike Schrader on lap four and holding off the veteran driver over the remainder of the 12 lap event to claim the victory. Schrader finished second holding off the challenges of Chuck Coffey who finished third. Laura Atkinson of Eldon was fourth and rookie driver Curtis Schaeffer rounded out the top 5. Wirts also claimed the victory in the heat race.

Ayrton Gennetten claimed his second feature in a row at XX for 2016, with a convincing win in the 600cc Micro Sprint class. Warrensburg driver Kameron Key gave a valiant effort but could not mount a serious charge on the leader and finished in second place. Kyle Schlotz made his first trip to XX a success by claiming third, Nick Schaefer advanced from 8th to finish fourth edging out fifth place Nick Rasa by a bumper at the finish. Key and Gennetten claimed the qualifying heat races.

Fans were eagerly awaiting the feature event in the Winged Sprint Cars with Pocohontas,IL driver Zach Daum starting alongside perennial front runner Jonathan Cornell. With opening night victor Tyler Thomas starting in row two, the feature pace would be fast around the quarter mile oval. At the drop of the green flag, Cornell took the point with Daum and Thomas in chase. Through a series of early caution flags the running order remained the same. Cornell maintained his lead opening up 2 to 3 car lengths on second place Daum. On lap 15 the caution came out as Daum slowed in turn two and stopped on the back stretch, only to retire to the pit area with mechanical woes. On the restart Tyler Thomas was on Cornell’s rear bumper but the shoe from Sedalia wad not to be caught as Cornell was not to be denied. Thomas brought his 86 machine home second, California’s Tyler Blank came home a solid third, Corey Nelson was fourth and Broc Elliott rounded out the top five.
