(Warrensburg, MO) The sun finally returned and after some hard work by the track maintenance crew, Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) fans and drivers took in a great night of racing to kick off the two-day Memorial Day race weekend!

Fans and drivers alike enjoyed some family time on the patriotic holiday weekend spending some time at CMS with 100 cars on hand. Jason Ryun from Kansas City celebrated his third CMS feature victory this year in the $500-to-win Pure Stock special feature. Matt Dotson from Hallsville, Missouri battled for the USRA Modified feature and claimed his first CMS feature win of the year. In the B-Mod feature, Tim Powell of Lansing, Kansas grabbed the win against another large field of drivers for his first-ever CMS feature win while Brett Wood from Warrensburg charged to his third feature victory in Street Stock action.

The Pure Stocks opened the heat racing action with 18 drivers checked in for competition. Byron Glotzbach snatched the first heat win and Kyle Rowland crossed the finish line for the checkers in heat two. For the main event special, Joshua Parcell looked strong and led early in the race with Kyle Rowland, Jason Ryun and Byron Glotzbach battling in the top four. Darrin Christy then entered the mix using the high side to move into the top three. Ryun grabbed the lead from Parcell on lap three and never looked back. Parcell ended his night after he hit a utility tire coming out of turn four.

Ryun won the big money feature and mentioned in his interview he heard the other cars attempting to work around him. Glotzbach tried several times to pass Ryun, but finished second followed by Christy, Rowland, and newcomer, John Shaver from Lamar, Missouri, who rounded out the top five.

B-Mod drivers had another chance to improve their driving skills against a large field of 34 drivers registered for racing. During the three qualifying heat races Chris Jackson, Jacob Ebert, Andy Bryant, and Tim Powell claimed the wins.

The feature began as Ebert took charge up front early in the race. Jackson pressured Ebert throughout the race until his night ended after he collided with a utility tire off of turn four. Bryant, Troy Carlyle, and Powell also moved up into the top five to pressure Ebert. Late in the race, Powell used the middle groove to push past Ebert on the low side to claim his first-ever CMS feature win after an appearance nine years ago. Ebert stayed strong in second followed by Russell Niehoff, Colton Stevens from his B-main win, and Bobby Russell also out of the B-main into fifth. In the Street Stock division, drivers once again set their sights on Victory lane as 16 drivers zeroed in on setting up their cars for a heat wins. Brian Eckhoff claimed his first heat win in the opening heat while the final heat went to Clayton Campbell.

As the green flag flew for the feature start, Eckhoff had a good groove in the middle of the track and held off Campbell until midway through the race. Campbell worked the low side for the lead with Jay Prevete moving up past Eckhoff into the second spot. The final lap of the race saw Brett Wood put his car up in the middle to high side on the last lap to claim the win. Campbell hung on to second with Prevete third. Zack Smith, the young third-generation driver, ran his best race at CMS this season in fourth while former track champion Marc Carter moved up into fifth.

A healthy count of 32 USRA ‘Mighty’ Modified drivers checked in for racing. This week, during the Modified heat races the fans were once again thrilled to see some entertaining racing as Brian Johnson, Danny Scrogham, Gunner Martin, and Lewis Jackson claimed the heat wins.

The USRA modifieds are always exciting to watch at CMS and last evening was another thriller. Scrogham dove low into the first turn to lead early and led for the first 17 laps before a caution flag emerged. Jackson used the high side on the multi-grooved surface to maintain third. Meanwhile, Johnson stayed in the mix until late in the race when he suffered a mechanical issue after a restart in turn two ended his night.

Matt Dotson pressured Scrogham later in the race after several restarts and finally made it stick in turn one after it appeared Scrogham’s car couldn’t hold the low side. Chad Lyle also moved up with Aaron Marrant to battle in the top three until Lyle’s car had a mechanical issue on the final lap, which ended his night. Dotson prevailed in the end and claimed his first CMS USRA Modified win this season. Marrant hung on and grabbed the second spot after Lyle departed the track. Scrogham also moved back up into third for his best finish this season. Tanner Mullins inside the top five.

USRA Modified drivers should take note of the special bonuses offered by promoters Earl and Susan Walls for the big three summer holiday special events. For any driver who wins the Memorial Day $3,000-to-win race and then also wins the Tom Wilson Memorial over Independence Day weekend, and then goes on to win the $3,000-to-win race later in the year over Labor Day weekend, they will earn a $5,000 bonus for the clean sweep! If you add the base purse “to win” money for the three events together it totals $11,000, now add on another $7,500 in bonus money and that totals a whopping possible $18,500 going to a driver who sweeps all three events. However, there’s still a $2,500 bonus for any driver that doubles up and wins any two of the three big-money events this summer.
