Wheatland, Missouri (June 12, 2016) – Eric Turner rode the high line around Lucas Oil Speedway to his second victory of the season, taking Saturday night’s featured Pitts Homes USRA Modified win in a duel with Jeff Cutshaw.

Turner, of Hermitage, earned $1,000 from Rains Ice on Hunting for Heroes Night at the Races Presented by KMIZ ABC 17.

Other winners as 94 cars checked into the pit area were: Derek Brown (Carson’s Corner NAPA Street Stocks), Jon Melloway (ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Models) and Andy Bryant (Ozark Golf Cars B-Mods).
Turner had more late-race drama than he wanted. With the checkers in sight on the 25th and final lap, a caution flag came out after Dwight Niehoff spun in turn four. That set up a one-lap shootout for the win.

But Turner, who had opened a 12-car length lead over Cutshaw and had it wiped out after the caution, pulled away on the restart to earn the victory.

Cutshaw grabbed the lead on lap five form Tad Davis with Turner in pursuit. He moved to the outside groove and went past Cutshaw on lap 15.

“That was a good race. I didn’t know really what to do, it was kind of a gamble to go up there on the top,” Turning said, noting that he had wanted to run that line all season but the track had not been conducive to doing so.

Cutshaw, the division’s points leader, wound up second with Johnny Fennewald of Appleton City third.

John Sheets earned the $100 product certificate Out-Pace Racing Products Featured Class Hard-Charger Award, advancing from 21st to sixth.

Five for Brown: Derek Brown of Stoutland made if five Street Stock feature victories in eight attempts this season.

Brown, the division’s runaway points leader, led all 20 laps but had to hold off a hard-charging Johnny Coats of Joplin over the final five laps. Coats settled for his second straight runner-up finish and Marc Carter of Warrensburg finished third.

“It was really good. I don’t know what else I could do to make it much better, but I guess I have to,” Brown said. “It looked like (Coats) was close the whole race.”

Shawn Whitman, going from 15th to fourth, earned the AR Bodies Street Stock $50 Hard-Charger product certificate.

Melloway denies Marrant: Jon Melloway snapped Aaron Marrant’s four-race winning streak in the ULMA Late Model division, holding on after a restart with three laps remaining.

Lucas Oil Speedway is located at Highways 83 and 54 in Wheatland, Missouri. A campground with shower and bathroom facilities is also available. With it’s entrance located just outside the pit gate this sprawling scenic camping facility will continue to enhance the racing experience at the Diamond of Dirt Tracks. “When there’s a high line here, this is a very fast track,” Melloway said. “This is one of the track I definitely have wanted to win at. It’s the best facility in the United States and to win here is quite an honor.”

Melloway, of Hallsville, took his first Lucas Oil Speedway feature win the season by denying Richmond’s Marrant. Kenny Mudd of Winfield finished third.

Earning the Keyser Manufacturing Hard Charger Award, worth a $100 product certificate, was Lane Elhert. He finished sixth after starting 15th.

Bryant wins, then crashes: Just after crossing the finish line for his second feature victory of the season, Bryant’s car veered right and into the wall entering turn one. He car was  damaged, but he was not injured.

“The right front caught when I got past the flag stand. I don’t know,” Bryant said in a somewhat-subdued victory lane celebration, his towed car behind him.

Bryant, of Fort Scott, Kan., took command on lap three, taking over the lead from pole-sitter J.C. Morton. Lebanon’s Kris Jackson finished second and Springfield’s Morton wound up third. For Morton, the season points leader, it was his sixth straight finish of fourth or better in as many races.

The program was part of a big weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway, that includes the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series. The 5th annual John Haas Memorial Drag Boat Classic concludes on Sunday as eliminations begin at 9 a.m.
