Central Missouri Speedway(Warrensburg, MO) Sizzling summer heat once again set in over the heartland as temperatures climbed well into the nineties on Midwest Coatings race night at Central Missouri Speedway. However, not even the soaring heat could dampen the spirits of the hearty race fans and 70 drivers on hand in the USRA Modified, Street Stock, B-Mod, and Pure Stock divisions.

Fans in the stands had a rare opportunity to take in two USRA Modified main events as the night began with a previously weathered-out event from May. It was an interesting situation given the track condition early on usually only sees heat race action, but on this night, the USRA Modified drivers did not disappoint as they took to the track to begin their program.

Veteran CMS aces Tim Karrick and Jim Moody shared the front row for the makeup USRA Modified main event to star the night. Moody quickly paced the field early on to pull away with a comfortable lead over Karrick, Gunner Martin, and Terry Schultz. The race remained green-flag status through the first 17 laps when Ron Westerhold’s car got upside down off of turn three and four. Westerhold was a bit shaken from the incident but was able to walk away from the incident.

When racing resumed, Martin continued to hound Moody up front as Schultz and Blackburn battled for the fourth position behind Karrick. On lap 19, the race was slowed for the final time for a quick caution involving two cars in turn four. Once the field was realigned Moody charged away from any pursuers to take his first main event win of the season after a string of bad luck.

In victory lane Moody stated, “I nearly quit it was getting so bad.” This win will surely help Moody gain some confidence heading into the Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl race, which he is the defending winner. Martin finished second followed by Karrick, Schultz, Blackburn, Ryan Middaugh, Brian Johnson, Dean Wille, Craig Crossette, and Tyler Shaw.

Once the Modified make-up event concluded, the regularly scheduled racing then began as the 10 Pure Stocks on hand competed in a pair of preliminary heat races. Points leader Rodger Detherage opened the night with a heat-race win over Derek Williams and Jimmy Smith. Byron Glotzbach of Topeka, Kansans took the checkers in heat two ahead of Larry Norris and Jeremiah Wilson.

B-Mods were next with 20 cars competing in three heat races and gunning for the spot in the 15-lap main event. Basehor, Kansas driver Colten Stevens drove from the tail of the field to claim the win in the opening heat over a returning Bradley Moore and Chris Brockway. Heat two went to Jacob Ebert ahead of another returning driver, James McMillin of Warrensburg, Dakota Foster finished third. The final B-mod heat of the night went to Lockwood, Missouri’s Russ Niehoff over Bobby Russell, and Doug Wetzel.

Up next was the talent rich group of 11 Street Stocks began their program for the night with a pair of heat races. Clayton Campbell, hot of his win last week claimed the opening heat race victory over Troy Turley and Brian Eckhoff in the opening heat with Brett Wood racing his way to the front in heat two over Jay Prevete and John Brooks.

USRA Modifieds then returned for their regularly scheduled events as the night continued on with 29 drivers taking to the track for four heat races. The opening heat race went to Jim Moody from the sixth-starting spot over Tyler Shaw and Ryan Middaugh. Terry Schultz fought off a hard-charging Brian Johnson for the win in heat two with Dwight Niehoff finishing third. The third heat race went to Lewis Jackson of Wellsville, Kansas over Dean Wille and Gunner Martin. The final heat went to Matt Dotson ahead of Kevin Blackburn and Nic Bidinger.

Byron Glotzbach and Rodger Detherage led the field to the green flag to start the Pure Stock 10-lap main event but a quick spin by Derek Williams saw the field realign for a complete restart with Williams reporting to the tail of the field. Glotzbach led the opening lap with Detherage in hot pursuit. Former champion Jeremiah Wilson moved into the third position early as he pressured for the second spot.

On lap three a quick yellow flag slowed the field before Glotzbach led the field for the restart. With Glotzbach solidly out front Wilson and Larry Norris then ran close for second with Detherage slipping to fourth with Jimmy Smith fifth.

By lap eight, Glotzbach enjoyed a full straightaway lead on the rest of the field but just before the white flag flew, Jason Ballard’s car contacted the utility tire in turn one setting up a green, white, and checkered flag finish. However, another incident Williams sparked a chain-reaction incident another caution flag as both Williams and Ballard were unable to continue. In the end, Glotzbach drove to his second win of the year, this time over Jimmy Smith, Larry Norris, Jeremiah Wilson and Amanda Sammons.

The next race up was the USRA Modified B-main event in which the top six cars transferred to the main event. Making their to the grid were Danny Scrogham, Jimmy Eaton, Jr., Kevin Newell, Ronnie Woods, Nick Pence, and Justin Plumb.

The 20-car starting field for the 15-lap B-mod main event then reported to the track for the next race with Colten Stevens and Jacob Ebert leading the way. Ebert and Stevens rand side-by-side to complete lap one with Stevens edging forward. A quick caution flag flew for Johnny McGinnis and Chris Brockway on lap two to realign the field.

Stevens led Ebert, Russ Niehoff, Bobby Russell, Dakota Foster, and James McMillin for the restart. Russ Niehoff took the battle for the lead three wide with Ebert and Stevens and took command momentarily before Ebert shot back out front by lap four with Niehoff continuing to pressure the leader until a caution flew for Tim Smith’s single-car spin after the completion of lap four.

For the restart, Ebert led Niehoff, Stevens, Foster, Russell, and McMillin with 11 laps remaining. Just as things were heating up at in the top three, another caution flew for Leroy Morrison’s single-car spin. Ebert once again led the field to the restart a few moments later. Russ Niehoff’s strong night came to an end before the restart with a left-rear flat tire.

Behind Ebert up front, Stevens and Foster waged a classic battle for second with McMillin and Russell also running close. Dou Wetzel, Mark Forrester and Ernie Walker also ran inside the top ten. As the laps clicked away, Ebert pulled away from the rest of the field leaving them to battle for runner-up honors. However, coming for lap 11 off corner number four Ebert’s car spun around after contact with Rick Anderson, bringing out the caution flag with Ebert and Anderson reporting to the tail.

On the restart Stevens led Foster, McMillin, Russell, Wetzel, and Forrester to settle the last few laps; however, Wetzel experienced a single-car spin in turn four to draw another caution over the field. Stevens again led the way over Foster and McMillin when green-flag racing continued.

Over the last few laps the top four cars ran close but it was Foster who slipped by to grab the lead on the restart leaving Stevens in a battle with McMillin for second. Foster pulled out to a five-car length lead by the white flag but a single-car spin by Chris Brockway setup another main event green, white, and checkered flag finish.

Another single-car spin by Leroy Morrison setup yet another two-lap dash to the finish but in the end Foster prevailed to secure his first CMS win of the year over Stevens, McMillin, Russell, Forrester, and 78-year old Ernie Walker of Sedalia.

Street Stocks returned for their 15-lap main event with Clayton Campbell and Brett Wood continuing their season long battle from the front row. The opening laps of the event were racing personified as Campbell and Wood ran door panel to door panel never touching one another and respecting each other’s space. On lap two, a scary incident involving Rob Hardwick occurred as his throttle stuck coming down the back straightaway causing him to go airborne over the turn three embankment. Hardwick’s car slammed to the ground but thankfully remained on all four wheels. Unfortunately, the car then hit several of the outlying trees and came to a grinding halt. Hardwick was shaken from the incident but was able to come out of the car under his own power and walk to the emergency services vehicle. Hardwick later went to a local hospital to be checked on after complaining of some back pain. No further update was available at press time.

When racing resumed Campbell and Wood resumed their fierce battle but Jay Prevete was then able to come up and put his machine in the mix as he actually moved into second ahead of Wood. Meanwhile Brian Eckhoff, Troy Turley, Brian Inlow, and John Brooks waged their own battle for spots among the top five.

A second caution slowed the field midway through the event setting up a final restart and chance to steal away Campbell’s thunder. By lap 10, Campbell left his closest pursuers to battle for the runner-up spot as he pulled away for his third feature win of the year. Behind the leader Wood and Prevete took their intense battle for the runner-up finish right to the final moments as Wood edged Prevete for runner-up with Prevete third. Eckhoff ran a strong race to finish fourth with Turley, Inlow, Brooks, and Gary Akers rounding out the top eight in the final rundown.

USRA Modifieds returned to close out the night’s events just as they had opened it with a 25-lap feature. Make-up feature winner Jim Moody and USRA national point leader Terry Schultz led the field to the initial green flag racing. Moody and Schultz ran close during the initial stages with Moody once again asserting himself as the man to beat.

Schultz had his hands full with Matt Dotson and track point’s leader Kevin Blackburn as the trio of drivers battled for second trying to keep Moody in their site. The field slowed on lap four for debris in turn one but the race quickly resumed with Moody leading Dotson and Blackburn. Just outside of the top three Schultz and Dean Wille were the latest drivers to have a classic battle to remain in the top five. Lap-after-lap these men also ran several laps in close quarters racing without touching one another.

With Moody setting a blistering pace the drivers settled into their rhythm as the race remained in green flag-racing status. Moody pulled away from Dotson and Blackburn as these two drivers also ran several laps side-by-side to sort out who would pull into second place. Blackburn preferred the low line while Dotson sailed around the high side. Behind these drivers Wille and Schultz continued their battle for fourth. On back, Tyler Shaw was on his way to his best-ever CMS performance as he ran closely with Tim Karrick, Dalton Kirk, Justin Johnson, and Brian Johnson.

In the waning laps, Moody, who borrowed a motor from Bobby Ruff that matched the track’s surface and Moody’s driving style perfectly as he pulled away to claim his second-consecutive win of the night and solidifying himself in preparation for defending his $5,000 Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl win from last season. Blackburn prevailed in the battle for second with Dotson crossing the finish line third. Schultz edged Dean Wille for fourth with Wille rounding out the top five. Shaw, Karrick, Kirk, Justin Johnson and Brian Johnson completed the top ten.
