For Immediate Release–

While the heat proved challenging for some, Jonathan Cornell was one cool customer during Sunday Night Thunder as he racked up yet another victory in winged sprint car action for Sonic at Double-X Speedway. Starting on the front row with fellow heat race winner Taylor Walton, Cornell took the lead in turn one on the opening lap and quickly opened up a sizeable lead. Walton gave chase for 24 laps, keeping the leader in sight but not able to make up any ground on the fleet #28 machine. As Cornell came out of turn four to take the checkered flag the red light came on as the checkered waved for Walton who had contacted the backstretch wall and turned over. With Cornell claiming the victory, Tyler Blank finished second, Corey Nelson earned third. Walton, as a result of bringing out the red was scored as the final car on the lead lap in fourth and Ricky Logan made a return to the speedway claiming fifth. Cornell and Walton claimed the heat races.

The Super Stock class saw a similar situation with Derek Henson taking the early lead with the remainder of the field giving chase. From the drop of the green flag, Harlan Dowell would run the high line slowly gaining on the leader and on lap 13 Dowell would pass Henson in turns one and two. A caution on lap 14, for a stalled car on the front stretch before the checkered flag was displayed forced a green, white, checker restart. Dowell would hold off Henson for the “overtime” period to claim the win. Derek Henson, John Clancy Jr., Clayton Campbell and Arthur Hays would round out the top five. Dowell claimed the lone heat race in the class.

The 600cc Micro Sprint class saw Kameron Key lead the green to checker feature event to claim the win. Braydon Cromwell drove a great race but was unable to mount a challenge for the leader and came home second. Travis Arnold, Nick Rasa and Brian Wood rounded out the top five. Key and Arnold claimed the heat race victories.

In the Hobby Stock Division, Chuck Coffey put his #171 machine into victory lane again this season. Mike Schrader worked his way into the second spot at the stripe with Derek West finishing third in his first visit to the track, Jeremiah Walligford was fourth and Rudy Wirts completed the top five. Coffey also claimed the heat race in the division.

Next Sunday night the ASCS Warrior Region returns for the 14th annual Clyde Wood Memorial event. Always an exciting event, top sprint car drivers are on hand to compete. Gates will open early for tailgating, be sure to join us for this annual event. The season will come to a close on Sunday July 31st when season long awards will be presented at the conclusion of the evenings races.
