August 7, 2016 Race Report

The final checkered flag at Double-X Speedway for 2016 flew August 7, 2016 after being delayed one week due to a rain cancellation. The track hosted it’s four weekly classes on the final night of the season with point championships in the Street Stock and Hobby Stock divisions to be decided on the track. The stars of the evening though were in the Sprint Cars as crowd favorite Corey Nelson picked up his first feature victory of the season in his last chance to do so. It was not a “give me” victory as Nelson advanced from his third row starting position to run down race long leader Curtis Boyer and make a pass for the lead in turns one and two on the white flag lap to claim the win. The second star in the class was Tyler Blank. Earlier in the day, Blank was issued a challenge by a fan to start at the rear of the field, and, if he could race his way into the top three, he would be rewarded with a $600 payday from the fan. Declining his original starting position on the pole for the feature event, Blank started at the rear and began a steady advance through the field. Withstanding yellow flags and traffic Blank was able to advance to third at the checkered and claim the additional payday. With Nelson picking up the win, Curtis Boyer had to settle for second, Blank finished third, Mike Trent was fourth and Dustin Homan rounded out the top five. Mile Paulus drove a good race picking up sixth, teammate Ben Brown was seventh, Kaitlin Boland in her first 360 Winged Sprint Car feature finished eighth, Mike Ell was ninth and Clyde Knipp was credited with tenth. Blank and TJ Muths claimed the heat race victories.

In the 600cc Micro Sprints, it looked as if Ryan Marsch would be on his was to a feature win by taking the early lead, but fellow heat race winner Austin Crane found some grip and was able to take control of the race by the midpoint of the event. Following Crane under the checkered flag was Kameron Key in second, Nick Rasa in third, Ryan Marsch was fourth and Gunner Ramey completed the top five. Braydon Cromwell ran sixth, Jon Bernhardt was seventh, Jason Keith finished eighth, Steve Finn was ninth and Paul Alberson completed the top ten.

The Hobby Stock class saw Rudy Wirts leading Chuck Coffey by twenty points in the season standings at the beginning of the night. By the end of the evening, though, it was Coffey who would prevail by claiming the feature victory in convincing fashion. Chris Brockert claimed second within striking distance of the leader for the entire feature event. Daniel Cary was third, Doug Coffey was fourth and Mike Schrader finished fifth. Jeremiah Wallingford finished sixth while Wirts struggled with mechanical issues all evening and claimed seventh in the feature event. Alvin Cooney was credited with eighth place after turning over in turn one on the opening lap. Cooney and Chuck Coffey claimed the heat race victories.

In the Street Stock division the season point race was even closer with Cole Henson leading his brother Derek by a slim twelve point margin going in to the evening’s events. With a victory in the first heat and Derek securing a second place in his heat the margin was safe heading into the feature event, but it was still an open battle for the championship. Starting alongside second heat race winner Harlan Dowell, Jr., It was Dowell that took the lead early in the event. With the brothers Henson battling on the track veterans Dale Berry and John Clancy, Jr. were also mixing it up. A mid race caution for the 31C of Cole Henson juggled the line up and the yougster began his drive back through the field. At the front of the field Dowell was in command with Derek Henson maintaining a close second. At the drop of the checkered it was Dowell claiming the win and Derek Henson coming in second. John Clancy,Jr. finished third, Cole Henson recovered nicely to claim fourth with Dale Berry rounding out the top five. Zack Smith finished sixth, Destiny Dowell was seventh, Brandon Hays finished eighth, James Keeran was ninth and Josh McGighy finished tenth.

After the evening’s races were complete the season point standings were recognized along with recipients of rookie of the year and perfect attendance. Following the awards presentation some special races were run and the winners are included in the results. The owners, staff, and sponsors of Double-X Speedway thank everyone who raced or came out as a fan to support the track in 2016. We hope to see each and every one of you back in 2017 for another edition of “Sunday Night Thunder”.
