Lucas Oil SpeedwayBy Lyndal Scranton – Wheatland, Missouri (August 28, 2016) – It was celebration time for the Brown family Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Timothy Brown drove to victory in the Carson’s Corner NAPA Street Stocks feature and his son, Derek Brown, celebrated the track championship after a second-place finish.

“I wouldn’t rather lose to anyone else out here,” Derek Brown said on Bill Roberts Chevrolet-Buick Season Championship Night Presented by KYOO-Your Country 99 and KPOW-Power 97.7.
Other feature winners on what also was Public Safety Appreciation Night, as 125 cars checked into the pits, were: J.C. Morton (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Todd Shute (ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Models) and Eric Turner (Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds).

Joining Brown as track champs for 2016 were Morton (Ozark Golf Cars B-Mods),  Aaron Marrant (ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Models) and Jeff Cutshaw (Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds).

Timothy Brown captured his third Street Stocks feature victory of the season, hanging on to defeat his son after the race’s fourth caution wiped out a big lead with two laps to go.

Both Browns went to victory lane for the post-race celebration. Timothy Brown said it was gratifying to finish in front of son. Both are from Stoutland and have been competing against each other for several years.

“That’s better than him in front of me,” a smiling Timothy Brown said of the order of finish.

Derek Brown fell just short of his 10th feature win of the season, but with an insurmountable points lead headed into the final night of the regular season was plenty happy.

“We definitely put a good one together,” Derek Brown said of a season that included two second places and a trio of third-place finishes in 16 races.

Johnny Coats of Joplin, winner of the previous two features, finished third ahead of Republic’s Burl Woods.

Brandon Dunham was named AR Bodies Carson’s Corner NAPA Street Stock Hard Charger, starting 22nd and finishing 13th. He received a $50 product certificate.

Morton wins night, season: Springfield’s J.C. Morton clinched the B-Mod season championship in style, making a last-lap pass of Andy Bryant to claim his third feature victory of the season.

Bryant, of Fort Scott, Kan., was unable to hang on after the race’s fifth caution led to a restart with two laps to go. Morton used the high line to sail past Bryant in turn two on the final lap.

“I kind on set up on a mission tonight to be the only car out here” in B-Mod victory lane, Morton said. “There at the end there were two grooves, real racy, and I figured Andy would move up to block. He let me race and I was able to get by.”

Shawn Strong of Billings, who was seeking his third straight victory, finished third. That was Strong’s fifth straight top-three finish to close the season.

Shute scores first: Todd Shute, who’s only had a handful of starts in a ULMA Late Model, took the lead with five laps remaining and held off Jon Sheets for his first feature victory.

Shute, of Des Moines, Iowa, has been a Modified regular but got into a Late Model owned by Ed Young for the first time about a month ago. He was second at Lucas Oil Speedway a week earlier and broke through this time.

“I’m just glad I could sit in this chair,” Shute said of the Late Model ride. “Once I got by (Marrant) I was pretty sure we could stay out front.”

Marrant, of Richmond, led the first 15 laps and wound up third. Marrant also visited victory lane as the season champ, never giving up the points lead after four straight victories early in the season.

“We had a pretty good year, came out real strong,” Marrant said. “We’ve had a (tough) time this last month or so, but luckily we started strong.”

Sheets drove from a 13th starting position to finish second, earning the Keyser Manufacturing ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Model Hard Charger Award. He picked up a $100 product certificate.

Turner hangs on: Eric Turner of Hermitage led the final 11 laps, surviving several restarts after caution flags over the final half of the Pitts Homes USRA Modified feature.

Sedalia’s Terry Schultz finished second, harassing Turner over the final few laps – but was unable to get past as Turner hugged the bottom line around the track. Johnny Fennewald was third and Aaron Marrant fourth.

“Schultz was rolling up there (on the high line) and I wanted to move up there, but I figured I’d better stay down low,” Turner said.

Bolivar’s Cutshaw was running in the top five when he was involved in an accident with five laps remaining. He wound up 22nd, but had plenty of margin for error atop the standings to repeat his track championship.

Up next: Labor Day Weekend will be gigantic at Lucas Oil Speedway, with action on dirt and water. The 6th annual Diamond Drag Boat Nationals on the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series is next Friday through Sunday on Lake Lucas. Action will fire up with qualifying at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday with two runs both days. Eliminations are set for Sunday, Sept. 4.

Meanwhile, the Lucas Oil MLRA returns to the dirt track on Saturday night for the Larry Phillips Memorial Presented by G2 Gemini Apparel. The Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds will join the Late Models in a big program, starting at 7:30. Fans purchasing boat-race tickets that day – or a three-day boat race admission – will receive free admission to the stock-car races.
