Wheatland, Missouri (September 23, 2016) – Johnny Herrera made a late-race pass and held off veteran Sammy Swindell to prevail in the main event on Night One of the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Herrera, of Albuquerque, N.M., earned $3,000 for his fifth Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour victory of the season as the mega three-night Sprint Car event got underway.

Zach Daum drove to victory in the Boss Chassis Wingless Auto Racing Series feature on a night that 65 ASCS cars and 44 WAR Wingless Sprints checked into the pits.

Swindell, the 60-year-old veteran and three-time World of Outlaws Series champion, led the first 13 laps before Jonathan Cornell took the lead on lap 14 after a restart for the race’s fourth caution.

A red flag flew later that lap when Josh Baughman wound up on his top after jumping the cushion out of turn four. He was not injured and, because the red came out before the lap was official, Cornell was scored behind Swindell.

Swindell took advantage and went on to open up the lead on the restart with Cornell slipping to third behind Herrera.

Herrera tightened the margin and was pressuring Swindell when the sixth caution flew on lap 21. He quickly drove around Swindell on the high side to take his first lead of the race on lap 22 – but another red flag when Blake Hahn wound up on his side – halted things with three laps remaining.

But Herrera pulled away after the final restart to earn the victory.

“I had a really good car,” Herrera said. “Sammy is tough to beat. To out-run him, it’s always great.”

Swindell said he had some brake issues late in the race and had to fight to hang on for second. John Carney wound up third, Brad Loyet was fourth and Cornell took fifth.

A scary situation occurred on lap seven of B-Main 3 when Ray Allen Kulhanek of Danbury, Texas, had his car catch fire going down the back straightaway while leading the race. He spun the car to a stop against the wall near turn four, climbed from the cockpit and rolled, with his driver’s suit ablaze, until fire and safety crews arrived.

Daum earns WAR win: Zach Daum grabbed the lead with an outside pass of Korey Weyant coming to the finish of lap 17 and went on to capture the 25-lap WAR feature and $1,000 prize on night one of the Hockett-McMillin Memorial.

Daum, of Pocahontas, Ill., posted his second win in three WAR visits to Lucas Oil Speedway this season. It was hard-earned as he needed several laps, working both inside and outside, before making the pass of Weyant.

“This is as good as any dirt track is for the feature,” Daum said. “They did an excellent job on the track and for as many cars as are here … they did an excellent job on the surface.”

Weyant, of Springfield, Ill., held on for second and Clinton Boyles of Greenwood, Mo., charged from ninth to finish third.

Driver in both the ASCS and WAR divisions accumulate points the first two nights that go toward starting spots in Saturday’s finale night of action.

Round two Friday: Gates opening at 5, hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30 for Friday’s middle night of the Hockett/McMillin Memorial. A reminder that the action is part of the Free Kids Friday initiative at Lucas Oil Speedway this season with all youngsters 11-and-under admitted free. Kids 5-and-under always are free.

NASCAR legend Bobby Allison will be on hand as part of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety’s 2016 Designated Drivers Are Legendary campaign, showcasing the importance of sober driving in communities around Missouri.

Allison – inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011 and a winner of 84 Cup races including three Daytona 500s – will sign autographs and post for pictures from 6:45-7:15 p.m. Ticket prices:

Adults (16 and up) $20
