By Lyndal Scranton – WHEATLAND, Missouri (May 25, 2017) – Earl Pearson Jr. fired the first winning shot Thursday night as the 25th annual Show-Me 100 Presented by ProtecttheHarvest.com kicked off its three-night run at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Pearson, of Jacksonville, Fla., led the final 24 laps to capture the opening-night “Cowboy Classic Presented by Hot Rod Processing,” outlasting Scott Bloomquist to take the $6,000 win.

“I enjoy coming here and racing. It’s a beautiful place,” said Pearson, a former Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion who last won at Lucas Oil Speedway in a mid-summer event in 2009. “All in all, for our guys and all the sponsors at Lucas Oil Speedway, I’m proud to be in victory lane.”

Four-time Show-Me 100 champ Jimmy Owens finished third, Tim McCreadie was fourth and Mike Marlar came home fifth. A total of 67 Late Models checked into the pits for the event, co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and Lucas Oil MLRA.

Billings’ Jesse Stovall started on the front row alongside Bloomquist and got the jump after the green flag. Stovall led the first 14 laps until Pearson passed him in lapped traffic on lap 15 with Pearson leading until Stovall went back in front on lap 21.

Pearson grabbed the lead for good on the next lap after Stovall made contact with a slower car, damaging the right side of his car. Stovall began a steady fade over the next few laps and, after a late-race incident brought out the race’s only caution on lap 39, he wound up 20th.

“Stovall had the right line there early and in lapped traffic, he had to move around,” Pearson said. “That definitely helped us in that situation.”

The lone caution set up a six-lap shootout in the 45-lapper – a tribute to the No. 45 driven by Chancellor during his racing career. While pondering the re-start, Pearson was less than thrilled by the scenario that saw his lead over Bloomquist wiped out.

“I didn’t need to see that caution. I knew Scott would be awfully tough,” Pearson said. “I’m just glad the checkered flag came out because I could hear him back there.”

Bloomquist, of Mooresburg, Tenn., said if the final lap had been for $30,000 instead of $6,000, “there might have been a few scratches on the side of the car.”

“But the car was good,” said Bloomquist, the only five-time Show-Me 100 winner, after gaining valuable points toward a starting spot in the big show on Saturday.

Top finishers got a jump-start on collecting points, awarded on the first two nights, toward the first 16 starting positions in Saturday night’s 100-lap Show-Me 100.

“We have two more days here,” Pearson said. “Maybe we can get back into victory lane.”

For Owens, of Newport, Tenn., it was a good start at a place where he’s won seven times in the last six years.

“We’ve just got a good little set-up here that seems to work good with about any car we run here,” Owens said. “This track just suits us real good.”

Heat race winners were Bloomquist, Darrell Lanigan, Payton Looney, Stovall, Pearson and Owens. Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pennsylvania set fast time with a lap of 15.986.

Duvall wires USRA Modified field: Joe Duvall of Claremore, Okla., led all 20 laps to capture the Pitts Homes USRA Modified feature.

Matt Dotson of Sturgeon, Mo., was second and Bolivar’s Jeff Cutshaw, the three-time reigning Lucas Oil Speedway track champ, finished third.

“The local cars here that race every week are pretty good,” said Duvall, who’s spending much of his season on the United States Modified Touring Series. “I got around Cutshaw pretty quick there and I didn’t know what to do.

“I lost a USMTS race a couple of weeks ago and I wasn’t gonna let that happen again.”

Ryan Middaugh came home fourth with Chad Wheeler in fifth.

Coming up: Action resumes on Friday night with another full program for the Late Models, featuring the $6,000-to-win “Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson” honoring the long-time West Plains Motor Speedway owners who started the Show-Me 100.

Drivers will collect points from Thursday and Friday races to set the first 18 starting position for Saturday’s 100-lap Show-Me 100.

Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds also will be running full programs on Friday and Saturday.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. Hot laps begin at 7 p.m. with racing action at 7:35.
