(Warrensburg, MO) Weekly racing continued Saturday night at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) with 84 drivers checked in for action among the competing car classes including USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Midwest Mod-Lites, USRA B-Mods, and Pure Stocks. As it turned out, the social media buzz was alive with excitement from drivers and fans after five outstanding main events closed out the night in a fast-moving three-hour time span.

Racing began with the Pure Stock division and three heat races for the 17 drivers on hand. Jeff Hardy picked up his second heat win of the year for the opening race of the night. Byron Glotzbach of Kansas motored to his second heat-race win of the year during heat two, while last week’s feature winner Darrin Christy grabbed the checkers in the final heat.

Next up were the USRA B-Mods with a field of 20 cars. For the opening heat race, Jake Richards powered around current point leader Jacob Ebert for the victory, his third heat win of the year. Shane Patch drove to his first heat victory of the year during heat-race two, while Jonathan Knotts also claimed his first heat-race win of the year, edging Jeremy Lile for the win.

Midwest Mod-Lites once again produced a strong field of cars with 19 competitors signing in for the night. Travis Ruff had a scary moment when his car received major damage and wound up on top of a utility tire in turn four, thankfully he was okay after the incident. When racing resumed, Brian ‘Ziggy’ Ziegler picked up the win in his first Mod-Lite appearance. Heat two went to point’s leader Dillon Raffurty, while the heat-three victory went to Justin Raffurty.

Street Stocks took to the track for a pair of heat races next in the program with Michael Mullins edging Brett Wood in the opening heat for his second heat win of the year. For heat two, a pair of former champions battled for the win as Clayton Campbell bested Marc Carter of Warrensburg for the victory.

Last out on the track for their preliminary heat races were the USRA Modifieds with 15 drivers on hand. It took a few tries to start but in the opening Modified heat, Jim Moody came from the back of the field to claim the win over Nathan Vaughn while Terry Schultz of Sedalia dominated heat two over Dalton Kirk to finish up the night’s preliminary action in 55 minutes.

When cars returned for the main events, the Pure Stocks were first up for their 12-lap main event with Jeff Hardy and Byron Glotzbach on the front row of the 17-car field. Glotzbach had a great start from his outside pole position and within three laps opened a fourth-straight-a-way lead over Darrin Christy and Rodger Detherage. On lap three, the field was slowed for a turn four caution for Rob Gard, Jeff Hardy, and Amanda Akers.

When racing resumed, Glotzbach led Christy, Detherage, Don Johnson and Josh Helm with three laps completed. A quick single-car spin on the restart by Dakkota Brisbin slowed the field once again with green-flag racing returning the next time around. Christy ran the low side with Detherage high as Glotzbach continued ever so slightly pulling away. By lap eight, Glotzbach had a half straightaway lead over the battle for second with Detherage and Christy. Christy’s night nearly came to an end when he came off turn two on the high side going up and over the berm and ultimately losing the spot to Detherage. However, the caution flew once again for a spin in turn four, when racing resumed it was still Glotzbach leading Christy, Detherage, Johnson, Helm, and Glenn Wilson.

For the final three-lap shootout, Glotzbach continued with his strong run and raced hard to keep Christy and point’s leader Detherage behind him. However, on lap ten, Christy found a boost of power off some low-side moisture and found a way around Glotzbach to take command of the race, coming to the white flag it was Christy leading Glotzbach with the lead duo racing close for the win. One final caution forced a green, white, and checkered flag finish as Christy grabbed his second feature win in a row over Glotzbach, Detherage, Helm, Johnson, and Wilson.

USRA B-Mods were next for their 20-lap event with Jake Richards and Cody Brill on row one. Jake Richards and Cody Brill amassed the most passing points on the night and began the 20-lap main event on row one. After several early caution-flags slowed the field, racing settled in for the opening laps with Brill taking command in a classic battle up front with Richards as the pair ran close for the lead in two race lines.

Richard used a high-side move around the low-running Brill on lap four to take the lead but Brill hung right with the leader challenging several times to keep Richards up on the wheel to hang onto the lead. A long period of green-flag racing settled and Cody Frazon was the man on the move during this stretch of racing as he advanced from eighth on the grid into the top five.

At lap fourteen the caution flew one more time with Richards in the lead over Brill, Jacob Ebert, Frazon and Doug Wetzel. Richards and Brill again had a strong restart but heartbreak settled in for Brill two laps later as he experienced mechanical issues and had to retire to the infield, bringing an end to his strong run. This placed Ebert in the runner-up spot for the final four laps but the current point’s leader was unable to reel in Richards who ultimately claimed his third main event of the season. Ebert finished second followed by Frazon, Doug Wetzel in fourth, and Bobby Russell fifth.

Midwest Mod-Lites returned for their 20-lap main event with Brian Ziegler and Justin Raffurty on point for the initial green flag. Unfortunately, Charlie Laizure and Don Dannar did not have the start they were looking for as Dannar’s night came to an early end with Laizure restarting tail back for the restart. Ziegler led the early laps in front of a hornet’s nest of cars in a furious multi-lane battle until lap eight when the caution flew.

When racing resumed, the action was intense with Ziegler, Travis Alexander, Justin Raffurty, Cody Miller, and Ed Griggs racing all over the track in an epic battle up front. Another quick caution on lap ten waved for a single-car spin as Travis Alexander took command of the race. Again, when the green flew the close-quarters racing resumed with seven cars in the lead pack as Alexander tried to pull away. Ed Griggs made his way to third by lap twelve in a great battle with Ziegler.

As the laps wore down, Alexander kept his machine up front. By lap fifteen, Griggs found himself in second and closing in quickly on the leader. For the final five turns in the main event, Griggs began reeling in the leader as the pair broke away from the intense battle for third between Ziegler, Miller, and David Raffurty. Coming for the white flag, Griggs caught the leader and darted to the low side to make the pass but fell just short at the finish as Alexander came the finish line by less than a car length to claim his second feature win of the year. Griggs finished a strong second after starting 14th on the grid. Rounding out the top five were Brian Ziegler, Cody Miller, and David Raffurty.

Michael Mullins and Brett wood were both in search of their first main event wins of the year when Street Stocks returned to action for the 15-lap main event. In another classic battle, the pair raced hard and side-by-side for the opening circuits until Wood edged ahead at lap three. However, his comfortable lead did not last long as third-starting Marc Carter advanced to second by lap four and began putting heavy pressure on the leader for the next few circuits.

On lap seven, the caution flew for Joey Holdren, who spun in turns one and two. When racing resumed, Wood led Carter, Clayton Campbell, Jay Prevete, and Mullins inside the top five. With the low line being the preferred line, drivers had to fight to keep their machines down low and Carter found an opening on the next lap to grab the lead with Campbell as they raced three wide coming to the stripe. However, Wood took to the high side and found it to his liking as he moved back up on several occasions to challenge Carter for the win.

Carter continued ‘cat-fishing’ the low side as Campbell came up to challenge Wood for second with Prevete in fourth by lap eleven. Wood was strong off turn two but Carter repelled all challenges. Later, Prevete moved to the low side and tried to find a way around Campbell as the four cars pulled away from the field. In the final laps, Carter pulled away just enough to keep the flock behind him and hung on for his 41st career CMS victory, good for fourth on the all-times winner’s list. Campbell eventually claimed second with Wood finishing in third, Prevete was fourth with Mullins posting a solid fifth-place run. After a year-and-a-half out of the car, Jeremy McConville made a strong return to racing by finishing sixth in the main event.

The final race of the night was the 25-lap USRA Modified main event with Jim Moody and Kevin Blackburn leading the field ahead of Dalton Kirk and Terry Schultz. Blackburn darted out to the early race lead Moody and Schultz close behind. By lap five, it was obvious the race was going to be an epic battle to the finish with Moody using a low-side maneuver to move to the front only for Blackburn to sweep back around on the high side to reclaim the top spot.

Lap-after-lap the pair kept the crowd wanting more as they each took turns at sliders and cross-over moves in hopes of pacing the field. Meanwhile Schultz, Kirk, and Lyle moved up to the high side behind the exciting battle for the lead. Blackburn and Moody kept their battle going throughout the event as Kerry Davis moved up in the field and joined Schultz and Lyle inside the top five in their own close battle. With no caution flags to slow the race, Blackburn and Moody weaved in and out of lapped traffic at the front. Blackburn daringly moved to the low side in the late stages with Moody quickly taking the outside line to try and grab the lead.

As the white-flag lap flew over the field it was still anyone’s race until the final turns with Blackburn and Moody taking their battle right to the finish. Blackburn ultimately claimed his third feature win of the year, which came at the perfect time for him after a pair of heartbreaking main events the weeks before when strong finishes slipped away from him. Moody finished a strong second in the caution-free event with Schultz once again near the top in third. Chad Lyle claimed the fourth position with Davis turning in another top-five run in fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Tim Karrick, Dalton Kirk, Kyle Westerhold, John Allen, and Danny Scrogham.
