(Warrensburg, MO) Race fans and drivers started the night with a sun-filled muggy summer evening on KIX 105.7 Race Night at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS).  With 73 cars competing for the coveted double checkers, Terry Schultz from Sedalia fought for the win the USRA Modified feature for his first CMS victory of the season. In the USRA B-Mod feature, Jake Richards from Lansing, Kansas went home with his fourth victory of the year.  Clayton Campbell of Otterville worked hard for his fifth feature victory in the Street Stocks.  Midwest Mod-Lite action saw Donnie Dannar from Oak Grove in victory lane for his first feature win this year while Kyle Rowland of Olathe, Kansas also celebrated in victory lane for his first 2017 CMS Pure Stocks win.

The Pure Stocks started the program of heat racing with 20 drivers checked in for competition. During the three qualifying heat races, Don Johnson grabbed the opening heat race win, Rodger Detherage won the second heat race while Joey Harper hung on and earned the win in heat number three.

For the Pure Stock main event, Detherage took command of the race from the drop of the green flag until Johnson grabbed the lead on lap three. Johnson held the lead through several cautions until the white flag flew when Kyle Rowland found some room on the low side and moved ahead to take charge. Darrin Christy and Detherage also challenged inside the top five. When the checkers flew, it was Rowland claiming his first CMS victory of the year. After looking like he might claim the victory, Johnson hung on for second with Christy, Detherage and modified driver Nathan Vaughn piloting a Pure Stock for the first time coming away in fifth.

USRA B-Mod drivers competed against a tough field of 19 drivers registered for racing. Blake Pierce charged to the first heat win of the night with Michael Bixby claiming his first heat win this season in heat two while the final heat-race win went to Jake Richards.

When the USRA B-Mods returned for their main event, Jake Richards shot out to the lead from the pole position on the first lap and commanded the field throughout the race. Racing was interesting behind him as Pierce and Bixby raced closely in turn two until Bixby and Pierce collided ending Pierce’s night. Meanwhile, Steven Clancy who started sixth motored past Cody Brill on the low side into second as Jacob Ebert trailed close behind.  Richards never allowed anyone to move past him as Clancy looked to close the gap late in the race. Richards again prevailed in the B-Mods and claimed his fourth feature win and second in a row at CMS.  Clancy had a strong run up to second with Brill, Ebert and Cody Frazon rounding out the top five.

The Midwest Mod-Lites were once again entertaining and lightning fast on the smooth surface with Ed Griggs and Donnie Dannar charging to the checkers for their respective heat wins. In the feature event, drivers completed the race without a caution as Dannar took off from the beginning with Travis Alexander a nose behind him. Dannar eventually pulled away from the field by lap five. Behind him there were several good battles for positions as Dillon Raffurty, Ed Griggs, and Alexander maneuvered in the top three. When the checkers flew, Dannar claimed his first CMS feature win this season. Dillon Raffurty was second as Alexander had a great battle with Griggs for third and prevailed with Griggs fourth. Tim Sterner completed the top-five with a great run in fifth.

In the Street Stock division, drivers once again set their sights on the winner’s circle as drivers dialed in their cars for a heat win. The first heat had Aaron Poe with the win and Clayton Campbell stayed up front in heat two for the second heat-race win. Campbell began the race, already a winner of four feature wins in search of victory number five for the year. Poe eventually grabbed the lead after an early race caution for Danny McKenzie in turn two. Campbell then took advantage from Poe and used the low side and seized the lead again. Behind them, Jay Prevete searched for a line in third as Marc Carter and Brett Wood lurked behind looking for a way to move up. Campbell stayed error free and prevailed at the checkers for this fifth win. Poe once again looked strong with a nice run to second with Prevete, Carter and Wood completing the top five.

This week during the USRA “Mighty” Modified heat race the fans were entertained to some tight racing action as the drivers attempted to set up their starting feature positions. Dean Wille bested Jim Moody and Tim Karrick in the top three spots of the heat. As the skies lit up with threatening weather at the start of the 20-lap main event, Moody jumped out to the early lead using the high-side cushion to power off turn two. Terry Schultz used the low side with some moisture to counter Moody’s high side run. It appeared Moody had a good chance to win this one until he jumped the cushion high in turn one. Schultz pounced and took advantage of the momentary slip and charged into the lead. Ultimately, Schultz held on for the remainder of the race for his first CMS feature win this year ahead of Moody in second. Dean Wille had a good night and finished third with Tim Karrick fourth and Kerry Davis who started ninth, moving up to finish fifth.

Weekly racing returns next Saturday for Midwest Coating Race Night and one more weekend of regular championship racing prior to the impending Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl over Independence Day weekend.
