(Warrensburg, Missouri) Seventy-three drivers and teams signed in for Heartland Waste Race night on a hot summer night at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS), as the championship point’s earning season resumed.
Among drivers on hand were 13 A-Mods, 17 B-Mods, 17 Mod-Lites, 17 Pure Stocks, and 9 Street Stocks. Fans witnessed a total of nine preliminary heat races and five main events throughout the night’s program.
Pure Stock Recap, Heat Races: Spencer Reiff led the way in the opening heat race over Joey Harper while James Mirts held off a hard charge from fourth-starting DJ Barnes for the victory in heat two. Reiff and Mirts started the 15-lap main event from row one. Reiff shot out to an early lead but a multiple-car incident slowed the race on lap one. Reiff lost the lead after the restart on lap three to Logan Headley. Not long after, Reiff had to retire to the pits as the caution flew by lap five. Headley drove away after the restart leaving Darrin Christy Gale Harper and David Doelz to battle for second. By lap 11, Christy moved up to challenge the leader. A late caution setup a green, white, and checkered flag finish. Just as it looked like Headley had the win, Darrin Christy moved around to the low side on the final lap as Headley’s car mysteriously slowed to a sixth-place finish. It was Christy’s first feature win of the year in front of the approving fans. Gale Harper recorded his best finish of the year in second ahead of Steve Evens third, Joey Harper fourth, and Scott Pullen fifth.
Mod-Lite Recap: Heat Races: Dillon Raffurty came from seventh on the field to take the win over Tyler Furrell in the opening Mod-Lite heat. For heat two, it was Donnie Dannar who took the win ahead sixth-starting Ed Griggs. Dillon Raffurty and Ed Griggs were set to occupied row one at the start of the 20-lap Mod-Lite main event. Caution flew early as Dillon Raffurty led by lap two. After the restart Donnie Dannar held second with David and Michael Raffurty third and fourth. Caution flew again on lap five to bunch the field, but Dillon Raffurty again drove away from Dannar. Caution again flew on lap eight, with much the same outcome but this time Michael Raffurty moved to third over David and Justin Raffurty. Just as the race was nearly over, Jason Isabell’s car flipped on the front stretch and the driver was okay. The race was declared official and Dillon Raffurty kept his perfect win streak going with another win. Behind Raffurty at the finish were Donnie Dannar, Michael Raffurty, David Raffurty, and Justin Raffurty.
B-Mod Recap, Heat Races: Brad Smith took command late in the opening B-Mod heat to take the checkers over Jacob Ebert to start off the B-Mod portion of the program while third-starting Patrick Royalty blasted to the front of the field early on in heat two to claim the win over Jeremy Lile. Brad Smith and Patrick Royalty setup a showdown from the front row for the 20-lap B-Mod main. Royalty led the opening lap ahead of Smith, Jeremy Lile and Sturgis Streeter to start the race. Royalty ran the low line while Smith ran high to keep things close, the same for Lile and Streeter behind them. By lap seven, Royalty began lapping traffic. Caution waved on lap eight to regroup the field with Royalty leading Smith and Lile. Caution again flew on lap nine with Royalty still in command, but caution flew once again before lap ten. Lile ran close on the restart on the low side behind Royalty with Jacob Ebert and Streeter in a close battle for third. Royalty went high on the top of turn two, like Smith before and the caution waved as he slid over the embankment from the lead. On the restart, Lile led Ebert and Streeter. A debris caution flew shortly after restart once again slowing the field. Lile held strong until caution again slowed the field at lap 14. With four laps remaining, caution flew again as Lile continued to lead Ebert, Streeter, and Rick Beebe. Streeter slid too high on lap 18 and lost two spots to Beebe and Smith as Lile raced to his first checkered flag of the year in a hard-fought victory. Ebert was second at the finish with Beebe third. Smith recovered to fourth with Streeter hanging on for fifth.
Street Stock Recap, Heat Races: In the lone Street Stock heat race of the evening it was Aaron Poe of Warrensburg who commanded the race over John Brooks and sixth-starting Cody Frazon. Poe and Frazon earned the front row starting positions for the 15-lap main event. Poe led from the onset but Frazon was close with James Flood and John Brooks just behind in a tight battle for third. Nathan Vaughn and Marc Carter battled hard in the top five as well with Flood retiring by lap six with mechanical problems. By lap seven, Poe held a one-second lead over Frazon, Brooks, Carter, and Vaughn. Carter moved to third by lap twelve with Brooks and Vaughn in a close battle for fourth. Poe was once again too strong as he collected another CMS victory. Frazon was a strong second with Carter finishing third. Brooks crossed the line fourth with Vaughn in fifth to close out the race.
A-Mod Recap, Heat Races: A-Mods finished off the preliminary action with a pair of heat races and it was Fulton, Missouri’s Kevin Blackburn who made his return to CMS a good one by claiming heat one over Dalton Kirk. Dustin Hodges cruised to an easy win in the final heat of the night with Dean Wille coming away second. Blackburn and Hodges began the final race of the night from row one for the A-Mod 25-lap feature. The pair raced side-by-side off corner two but Hodges took command at lap one over Blackburn, Dean Wille and Gunner Martin. Dennis Elliott moved up to fifth and challenged Martin for the fourth position by lap five as Hodges pulled away over Blackburn and Wille. By ap eight, Wille moved in on Blackburn to challenge for second while Elliott passed for fourth. Shortly after Elliott’s strong run was interrupted by a flat rear tire. For the restart, Hodges led Blackburn and Wille. Martin moved to third by lap 11 as Hodges now led Wille, Martin, and Blackburn at lap twelve. Meanwhile Brad Smith and Terry Schultz were in a tight battle just outside the top five with Kameron Grindstaff. By lap 17, Wille moved up to challenge Hodges for the lead as the pair pulled away from the Martin and Blackburn battle for third. Caution flew for debris on lap 17 with Hodges leading Wille and Blackburn. Smith reported to the infield tire-changing area on lap 18 as caution flew again. Hodges and Wille resumed their tight battle up front as Schultz found his way to the top five with five laps remaining. The final few laps saw Wille close right on the backside of the leader just as Martin’s car succumbed to mechanical issues on lap 21. For the four-lap finish, Hodges took the green ahead of Wille. Schultz moved to third, but caution flew again on lap 22 for a caution. One more caution flew just as the white flag was set to fly with Schultz blasting to the front for the final few laps marred by cautions. In the end, Schultz used the top line to take his second win of the season over Wille in second, Hodges third, Elliott fourth, and Grindstaff in fifth.
Next up, July 25th – Race #10 – Comfort Inn Race Night, featuring the first-ever appearance by the USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association Sprint Cars. Also running A-Mods, B-Mods, Mod-Lites, and Pure Stocks. Street Stocks have the week off next weekend. Kid’s night is just two weeks away and donations such as school supplies, tablets, and small items to fill kids’ bags with are now being accepted!
Pit gates will open at 4:30, followed by grandstand admission at 5, driver pill draw cutoff at 6:15 (no passing points if driver is a late check-in), pit meeting at 6:30, hot laps at 7, and racing at 7:30. Special event pricing is in effect with Adult Admission $15, Active Duty Military and Senior Citizens aged 65 to 72 $12, Kids 6 to 12 years old $6, five and under free, 75 and older and individuals permanently confined to a wheelchair are free in the grandstands. All pit passes are $40, regardless of age.
