(Warrensburg, Missouri) Excitement was in the air for Pepsi presents Kid’s Night at the Races on Saturday at Central Missouri Speedway with 65 race teams on hand in four divisions. During the intermission break, the youngsters ages 3 to 12 enjoyed their foot races and school supply goody bags with donated items from drivers, track staff, and race fans.
There were 17 Pure Stocks, 16 B-Mods, 16 POWRi Super Stocks, and 16 A-Mods signed in for the action. A total of 8 preliminary heat races were contested to determine the lineups for the four main events, which closed out the second half of the race program. Unfortunately for some drivers, disqualifications led to adjustments in the end results.

Rodney Schweizer and Kevin Blackburn sat atop the passing points after heat races and started the 25-lap main event from row one with Blackburn taking the early lead. Behind him, a furious battle for second ensued with three-wide racing by Schweizer, Tim Karrick, and Matt Johnson. At lap five, Johnson began his charge to the front and moved to second behind Blackburn while Karrick, Gunner Martin, and Dennis Elliott ran top five. Blackburn’s lead built to just over three seconds by lap ten. Shortly after, Johnson and Blackburn’s battle for the lead heated up with Johnson and Blackburn crossing lanes for the lead, initially missing one another in the process. However, on lap 17, Johnson’s attempt to slide in front of Blackburn led to contact between the two leaders in turn four, ending with Blackburn’s car too heavily damaged to continue after the caution flag was displayed. Johnson restarted at the tail of the field. Schweizer assumed the lead in his best-ever CMS run with Karrick and Martin searching for a way around the leader. The race dynamics changed again by lap 20 as Karrick, Elliott, and Kirk battled three-wide for third behind Schweizer and Martin with Elliott ultimately coming away with third. Martin was then the driver who tried slider moves on Schweizer as they swapped positions several times at the front of the field over the final two laps. After one last yellow-flag restart with two laps remaining, Elliott moved forward and made it a three-car race for the win. With one lap remaining, Schweizer fought off all slider attempts from Martin but coming for the checkered flag, as Schweizer tried to fend off Martin one last time, Elliott set them both up perfectly and collected his third main event win of the year. Martin was second in the initial finish with Schweizer third. After completion of the race, conduct points marred an otherwise exciting race (see page 4 of the track general rules) and disqualifications were issued by track owner Earl Walls to Kirk, Karrick, Johnson, and Blackburn due to various actions both on the track and in the pit area.

Devin Irvin and Clayton Campbell earned front-row honors to start the POWRi Super Stock 15-lap main event. Irvin has made his way to the upper echelon of the POWRi Super Stock national standings and looked to score additional points as he took the early lead. An early yellow flag slowed the field for a restart as Irvin led Cody Frazon and Campbell. The trio then settled in for a fantastic cleanly ran, side-by-side close-quarters battle for the lead. Campbell emerged as the leader with Frazon, Irvin and Aaron Poe left to battle for second. Shortly after, Poe’s car left the track over the berm in turns three and four as the caution waved, relegating Poe to the tail of the field. Another quick caution on the next lap flew as Campbell fended off Frazon, who challenged down low. Behind the leaders, Vaughn moved into the top five and raced for third against Irvin and Marc Carter. In the end, Campbell, the 2016 track champion held off a hard charge from Frazon to secure his 36th victory at CMS, good for eighth on the all-time winner’s list. Frazon was second followed by fourteenth-starting Vaughn in third, Irvin fourth and Carter fifth while Poe rebounded to sixth.

Joey Lile of Higginsville took top passing points honors in the B-Mods and began the night’s 20-lap event from row one alongside five-time track champion Jacob Ebert. A quick caution flew at the start of the race as Ebert battled Brad Smith at the front of the field. By lap five, Smith, the 2010 track champion had the lead over Ebert, Sebastian Wolfenbarger, Cody Brill, and Terry Schultz. By the time caution flew at lap seven, Smith had built nearly a full straightaway lead. On the restart, Smith led Wolfenbarger, and Schultze as Ebert faded to fourth just in front of Jeremy Lile in fifth. In the late stages of the race, Schultz moved in to take second as Smith continued to distance himself out front with Evert, Brill, and Lile still close inside the top five. With five laps remaining Smith led Schultz in the battle for the win; however, caution again flew at lap 16 setting up a four-lap dash to the finish after Wolfenbarger’s strong run came to an end with a lost drive shaft. Smith went on to score his 40th career CMS win holding off Schultz at the line. Ebert was third followed by Brill, Jeremy and Joey Lile inside the top six.

Gale Harper and Spencer Reiff led the field to the initial green flag for the Pure Stock 15-lap main event. Reiff took command early on and by lap five led over Gale Harper, Brian Cox, and Jeff Hardy. At lap nine, shortly before the restart, Reiff unexpectedly retired to the pits with Cox leading Gale Harper to the turns for the resumption of green-flag racing. This setup some exciting on track action as the Brothers Harper, Gale and Joey, worked to close in on Cox, who was in search of his first-ever victory, at the front of the field. Mean, eight-starting Bobby Russell moved forward to join the close competition while David Doelz and Cameron Kelly also moved forward from deep in the field. Just as it appeared Cox and Gale Harper would battle it out to collect a first CMS feature win, Cox’s car contacted the turn four wall and shot back down the track on the front stretch collecting Austin Story and Hardy in the process. The cars collided with Cox’s car slamming into the front stretch turn one utility tire. All three drivers were okay in the incident, their cars not so much as they retired from the event. This setup a two-lap sprint for the win between the Harper brothers, Russell, Doelz, and Kelly. Initially, Gale Harper narrowly edged out his brother Joey for his first-ever victory with Russell in third. However, post-race technical inspection led to disqualification for distributor and other violations for the Harpers as Russell was awarded the victory. Doelz finished second for a season-best second place run with Kelly also scoring a best finish of third. Scott Pullen, Cory Flamm, and Scott Martin added to the season-best runs by finishing fourth, fifth, and sixth in the revised standings.
