(Warrensburg, Missouri) The Sixth-Annual Super Stock Showdown highlighted the action on Pepsi Race Night Saturday at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) with 54 race teams competing. There were 20 POWRi Super Stocks, 11 B-Mods, 12 Pure Stocks, and 11 POWRi Midwest Mods.

Capturing the $2,000 payday in the 30-lap main event, was Johnny Coats of Joplin, Missouri in Super Stocks. Steven Bowers, Jr., picked up his second career CMS win by capturing the B-Mod main. Spencer Reiff collected his third trophy of the year in Pure Stock action while Earl Roark also as a three-time winner in POWRi Midwest Mods.

Johnny Coats of Joplin, Missouri, and Derek Henson of Russellville, Missouri, brought the Sixth-Annual Super Stock Showdown field to the initial green flag with Henson showing some early muscle before Coats made his way to the front before an early caution period slowed the field. On the restart, defending showdown champion Aaron Poe moved to second behind Coats looking to draw in the leader. A third of the way through the 30-lap event, Coats built a 1.98-second lead over Poe, Henson, Blaine Ewing, Jay Prevete. A second caution flew over the field at lap 12 and once again Coats held strong out front until the field slowed again at lap 16. Coats then led Poe, Henson, Prevete, and Ewing. Behind Coats, a close battle for second featured Henson, Poe, and Ewing until a lap-20 caution flew for Henson as his car left the surface in turn three after a previous lap incident with Ewing as he was unable to steer the car into the corner. After one additional caution, Ewing began to pressure Coats for the lead on several occasions, often pushing the limits in turns one and two as he nearly went over the embankment. Ewing’s hopes were dashed on lap 26 when he nearly spun trying to pass Coats on the high side. This left Coats all out front on his own as he ultimately captured his second win of the season and first-ever Super Stock Showdown victory. Ewing held on for second with Poe, Marc Carter, and Jay Prevete rounding out the top five.

The B-Mod 20-lap main event was a thriller from start to finish as pole-sitter Jeremy Lile led the opening laps ahead of Steven Bowers, Jr., Terry Schultz, and Jake Richards. By lap three, Bowers found his way to the front with Lile second and Schultz third. By lap five, Bowers and Schultz distanced themselves from Lile Richards, and Sturgis Streeter. Bowers ran low to middle while Schultz, was once again in familiar territory on the high side pressuring Bowers for the lead on every turn. By lap 14 Bowers had a comfortable but small three-car length advantage over Schultz but as the leaders diced their way through lapped traffic the battle for the lead tightened up again. A caution slowed the race a third of the way through the event and setup a restart in which Schultz again pressured for the lead pushing the turns one and two even wider and using up every inch of dirt to find a way to the front. Late in the race, Schultz pushed the limits a little too hard and slid off the embankment falling from contention on the final lap while miraculously saving the car from disaster off corner two and down the back stretch. Bowers ultimately claimed his second-ever CMS victory with Lile coming away second. Richards was consistent inside the top three all night and finished third ahead of Streeter and ninth-starting Jacob Ebert in fifth.

Spencer Reiff and Cory Flamm earned row one starting spots for the 20-lap Pure Stock main event. Reiff led the opening lap ahead of Conrad Workman and Jonathan Evans until yellow flag conditions slowed the field at lap three. On the restart, Reiff then led Evans and Larry Norris. By lap five, Leroy Morrison moved to second behind Reiff as David Doelz also advanced into the top four. The race was marred by several mid-race cautions through lap 12. Morrison’s car slowed to draw caution at lap 12 as Morrison was able to restart at the back of the field. After several cautions, officials cut five laps from the planned 20-lap distance. Morrison passed cars before the official starting cone on the front stretch and after crossing the finish line in fourth was penalized to sixth in the final rundown. Reiff went on to claim the victory, his third of the year ahead of Jonathan Evans in second. After a slow start, twelfth-starting Cameron Kelly rebounded to finish third, followed by Jeret Evans and Doelz inside the top five.

Kansas City, Missouri’s Tim Galvan led the field to the initial green flag for the 15-lap Midwest Mods main event and led the field early on over Shawn Burns and Earl Roark. Yellow conditions flew early with Galvan showing the way. At lap five, Roark began his charge towards the front on the high side as Galvan ran low with Roark eventually taking command of the race. Soon after, a second yellow-flag period waved over the field with Roark leading Galvan and Burns. One more caution slowed the field, but after that, it was a fast and furious fight to the end as Roark continued leading Galvan and Burns. Meanwhile, Dave Meyer worked to move forward as Josh Paul and Dakota Dillon fought for positions inside the top five. Eventually, Roark secured the win in a fantastic race over Burns and Galvan. Unfortunately, Burns’ car did not pass post-race technical inspection due to a throttle bore infraction, and he was disqualified from the finish. Galvan finished in second in the final rundown with Meyer third, Paul fourth, and Dillon fifth.

Several generous donations boosted the purse for the Super Stocks and the Pure Stocks. CMS wishes to thank Marc and Andrea Carter of Elite Auto Care LLC for adding to both purse payouts. In addition, ‘Nitro’ Nick Gibson’s Sweet Meats and Rockin’ A Distillery of Creighton, Missouri, added extra purse money for the Super Stocks. CMS Track Photographer Joshua Allee Photography boosted the longest haul awards for an out of state and Missouri-based driver and added to the Pure Stock winner’s take. CMS/Pub 13 employee also boosted the longest haul awards and hard-charger Super Stock awards, and Devin Wetzel Racing added to the hard-charger award.

We’re just a couple of weeks away from the annual Kid’s Night at the Races, slated for Saturday, August 6. Event Coordinator Barb Beck Wilson is actively seeking donations for the event, which may be brought to the track and dropped off at the pit entrance office on race day Saturdays. Items needed include, new and/or gently used bicycles for kids, toddler ages through age 12. Plus, crayons, colored pencils, dry-erase markers
glue sticks, loose leaf paper, scissors, folders, spiral notebook paper (school supplies), and small toys, trinkets, and candy treats (that will not melt), and driver memorabilia.
