The biggest winner’s check in USAC Midget racing awaits the winner of the October 10 DuPont “Gold Crown Midget Nationals” at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill. Defending winner Jerry Coons Jr. would like to repeat his 2008 win in his bid to overhaul the current point leaders in USAC’s Mopar National Midget Series.

Competitors in the USAC/SMRS Great Plains and Powri Midget Series will augment the October 8-10 Pontoon Beach event as those two series’ point standings will also be affected in the race which carries co-sanctioning.

Brad Sweet of Grass Valley, Calif. led all 25 laps to win Saturday nights’ Team Chevy “4-Crown Nationals” USAC Mopar National Midget feature at the Eldora Speedway. Sweet piloted the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Spike/Speedway Mopar to the win over Brad Kuhn, Dave Darland, Bryan Clauson and Darren Hagen. Kuhn continues to lead the series standings after his second-place finish. Bryan Clauson was the fastest qualifier and heats went to Coons, Sweet and Zach Daum.

The “Bob Wente Classic” on Saturday, October 10, concludes the Pontoon Beach program and four drivers are currently locked in a tight struggle for supremacy in USAC’s Mopar National Midget standings. Kuhn’s lead over Sweet is just 14 points, while Darren Hagen is third, 35 behind the leader and Coons is 95 back.

Kuhn also sits atop the Powri points and Brad Loyet of Sunset Hills, Mo. is currently atop the USAC/SMRS Great Plains Series.

Last year’s “Gold Crown Midget Nationals” featured USAC’s 50th event at the Tri-City oval. Bob Tattersall leads in terms of feature wins with four, while Mel Kenyon, Jack Hewitt and Doug Wolfgang each won three times on the dirt track, which has been reconfigured in recent years and now measures three-eighths mile.
