Jamaica, VA – The race for the Victory Lap Late Model Championship at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway couldn’t have been much tighter heading into the last point race of the season as Austin Hubbard of Seaford, DE and Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA went into the night a mire eight points apart. After qualifying Cohick had cut it to six points, that’s as close as Cohick would get. Come feature time Hubbard let it all hang out working his way to the front by lap 16 working inside Mark Parks of Forest, VA for the lead on way to his third win of the season and the 2007 Victory Late Model Championship. For his efforts Hubbard picked up $10,000 of the $25,000 championship point fund.
“This is the biggest accomplishment of my racing career, I told my crew that if we win the race then we know we win the championship, there was no holding back tonight,” commented an excited Hubbard in victory lane.
“To win the championship here is unbelievable, these are the best drivers in the country,” added Hubbard when asked about his competition.
Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Stevie Long, Louis Timberlake and Sommey Lacey. Scott Nelson picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with a thirteenth place finish.
In other action Page Harrison of Jetersville, VA picked up the Budweiser Modified victory in an exciting battle with Brian Dobie of Partlow, VA that saw six lead changes, while Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA picked up the 2007 Modified Championship. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Roger Jamerson of Glen Allen, VA took home his sixth victory of the season as Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA took home the Championship. In the Charger 25 lap feature Bob Terry of Stafford, VA put an exclamation point on his 2007 Championship by taking the lead on lap 14 to get his seventh win of the season. In the All American 15 lap feature Brett Adkins of Saluda, VA took home his first victory of 2007 as Kevin Fletcher of Saluda, VA finished seventh and was crowned the 2007 Champion.
In the Victory Lap Late Model 30 lap feature Sommey Lacey and Mark Parks led the field to green with Parks taking control and leading the first circuit followed closely by Lacey, Walker Arthur, Matt Morgan, Tom Cohick and Austin Hubbard.
On lap 4 Cohick brought out the races first caution with a spin in turn four ending his chances at the championship. On the restart Parks kept Lacey at bay as Arthur worked Morgan for third. On lap 8 Hubbard worked inside Arthur for fourth only to give it back the next lap. On lap 10 the races second caution came up for a spinning Morgan in turn 2.
On the restart Lacey took a peak under Parks but couldn’t make the pass as Hubbard worked inside Stevie Long to take back fourth. On lap 14 Hubbard made the move to take second from Lacey taking it at the line. Caution came out on lap 16 for Scott Tolbert as he came to rest on the backstretch.
On the restart Hubbard drove it hard under Parks into turn 1, the two battle side by side back to the line with Hubbard taking the lead by inches. On lap 18 the battle for second went three wide with Parks trying to hold off Arthur and Long. Arthur took the position as Parks had to come to pit road for a flat left front tire. Caution would come out for contact between Brett Royal and William King in turn 3.
On the restart Hubbard pulled away from the field. On lap 28 Louis Timberlake swept the outside of Lacey out of turn 2 to take fourth. On lap 29 the races last caution flew for a spin by Parks. On the restart Hubbard left Arthur, Long, Timberlake and lacey to battle for second on back as he cruised to his third win of the season, picking up the 2007 Victory Lap Late Model Championship.
Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Stevie Long, Louis Timberlake (started 13th) and Sommey Lacey.
In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Brian Dobie and Mark Schools led the field to green with Dobie leading the first lap. Dobie looked strong as he took command and pulled away by some eight car lengths. On lap 3 Matt Marshall worked inside Page Harrison to take third by inches at the line. Harrison battle back to the outside of Marshall to retake the spot on the next circuit and set out to catch Dobie.
Caution came out on lap 8 for a spinning Brent Bordeaux in turn 4. On the restart Harrison jumped inside Dobie to battle for the top spot. Harrison took the lead on lap 10 only to give it back the next lap as the two swapped the top spot six times before Harrison took control.
On lap 21 the battle for third intensified as Bret Hamilton swept the outside of Tommy Shiflet and Marshall to take the spot. On lap 22 Hamilton took second from Dobie but didn’t have enough to catch the leader as Harrison picked first win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Bret Hamilton, Brian Dobie, Matt Marshall and Tommy Shiflet. Matt Marshall picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fourth place finish.
In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Davis Lipscombe and Roger Jamerson led the field to green in a battle for the championship. Heading into turn 1 Lipscombe got on the gas a bit too quick spinning his car in front of the field, sending him to the rear.
On the restart Jamerson took control of the race as he pulled away from the second place battle between Tim Shelton and Walker Arthur. All eyes were on Lipscombe as he began his assault to get back into the top five. Lipscombe picked off positions one by one and by lap 14 was back in fifth.
By lap 20 Jamerson had worked his way to a substantial lead over Shelton who continued to race side by side with Arthur for second. On lap 24 Arthur finally got back by Shelton for second but had nothing for Jamerson who went on to collect his sixth win of the season but came up short in the chase for the championship. Davis Lipscombe brought home a fourth place finish to be crowned the 2007 champion. Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Tim Shelton, Lipscombe and Okey Synan, Jr. Kenny Moreland picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with a sixth place finish.
In the All American 15 lap feature Raymond Harper and Johnny Brooks Jr. led the field to green but it was fourth place starter William Dunn who would lead the first lap. Dunn set the pace with fast qualifier Brett Adkins working his way quickly to second. On lap 4 Atkins blew by Dunn out of turn 4 to take the lead.
Once out front the only thing to slow Adkins was the caution flag. On lap 12 the races second and final caution came out for a spin by Sabrina Harper. On the restart no one was able to stay with Adkins as he cruised to his first win of 2007. Rounding out the top fie were William Dunn, Marty Coltrain, Raymond Harper and Charles Duke II. Kevin Fletcher finished sixth as was crowned the 2007 champion in only his first full year in the division.

On lap 13 Toole’s motor expired in turn 3 as Wesley Givens, James Givens and Terry made it three wide in a battle for the lead, of which Terry took at the line. Once out front Terry ran his own line and was able to hold off a very fast Paul Bess to take his seventh victory of the season and the championship crown. Rounding out the top five were Paul Bess, James Givens, John Kirby and Wesley Givens. John Kirby picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fourth place finish.
Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will return to action next Friday and Saturday September 21 – 22 for the speedway’s 2007 season finale the 38th Annual Fall Classic presented by New Generation Racing. Its two night’s full of high octane, hard chargin’, elbow’s up short track racing! No points, no pressure, just racing for pride and bragging rights.
Friday, September 21st all six of the tracks weekly divisions will run hot laps, qualifying and heats to set the fields for Saturday night features. Competitor gates will open at 4:00 p.m. while the spectator gates swing open at 5:00 p.m. On Track Action begins at 7:15 p.m. with hot laps. Free camping is available, no hook ups.
Friday night’s admission will be $5 with children 6 and under admitted free with a paying adult.
Saturday, September 22nd all six divisions will run B Mains and Features to crown this year’s Fall Classic Champions. The New Generation Racing Sprint Cars will also be crowing their champion for 2007. Competitor gates will open at 3:00 p.m. while the spectator gates swing open at 5:00 p.m. On Track Action begins at 6:30 p.m. with hot laps.
