LOCUST GROVE AR. Jack Sullivan headed a field of 194 Modifieds that attempted to qualify for the 3rd Annual Dirt Works World Modified Championship at the Batesville Speedway. Sullivan topped the first round of qualifying, and will be on the pole for Saturday's feature event. The top eight cars in Thursday's Qualifying Feature will make up the inside row of the three-wide feature start Saturday.
Jimmy Owens was on the pole for the 25 Lap Qualifier, with Wayne Brooks to his outside. Owens moved to the lead as the green flag waved, with Brooks, Jack Sullivan, Mark Norris, and Jason Hughes falling in behind. Hughes took the fourth spot from Norris on the second lap.
Out front, Owens was ten carlengths ahead of Brooks by lap five. Don Adams took over the fifth spot on lap six. Sullivan was on Brooks' back bumper on lap nine. The pair were side by side on lap ten, and Sullivan drove by Brooks for second in turn four. Hughes followed Sullivan through, going by Brooks on the next lap.
Sullivan was starting to reel Owens in. Sullivan had closed to five carlengths by lap 18, and had whittled Owens' margin down to two carlengths by lap 20. Sullivan got a look under Owens on lap 22. It wasn't until the pair hit the white flag at the start finish line that Sullivan was able to pull even. Sullivan was riding the bottom, and got his nose ahead of Owens going into turn one.
Jack Sullivan came home with the win, with Jimmy Owens, Jason Hughes, Wayne Brooks, and Don Adams making up the top five. Kelly Shryock, Johnny Bone Jr. and Denny Schwartz took the final three transfer spots. Mark Norris and Scott Drake rounded out the top ten.
