ASH FLAT, AR The West Plains Motor Speedway will open it's gates for the 15th year of competition on Thursday, March 18. The 5th Annual Dirt Works Stanfill Memorial Modified Special will get things underway as the season opener for 2004. A big field of modifieds from across the country should fill the pits for this big money event.

The winner of this years event will claim $8,000, while $800 will be paid to start the 24 car field on Saturday, March 20. The event will pay a purse that exceeds $40,000. The early entry list includes Gary Blackburn of Fulton, MO, Lucas Cox of Bald Knob, AR, Mike Mashl of Green Bay, WI, Brian Mullen of Green Bay, WI, Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, MN, Mike Sorensen of Rochester, MN, Jeremy Tharp of Bald Knob, AR and Ronnie Vernon of Friendship, TN; just to name a few travelling some distance to be on hand for this early season special.

There will be three opportunities to qualify for Saturday's main event. Each night, the field will draw for heat race positions, and the top finishers from the heats will go into a qualifying feature. The top eight from each night's qualifying feature will advance into the 50-lap main event on Saturday night, following the final round of qualifying. Any driver that does not make the nightly cut, can return for the next nights qualifying round to attempt again.

Even though this will not be a sanctioned event, IMCA modified rules will apply except for a $500 motor claim/exchange rule. Weight rule requires 2450 lbs. with the driver after the race, although with aluminum heads an additional 50 lbs. will be required to be positioned in front of the bellhousing for a total of 2500 lbs. No mufflers are required at WPMS.

Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. each night, with racing slated to get underway at 7:00 p.m. Grandstand admission will be $8 for adults, $2 for kids 7-11 on Thursday and Friday. Admission on Saturday will be $10 for adults, and $3 for kids 7-11. Kids 6 yrs. and under are always admitted free. Pit passes will be $25 Thursday and Friday, and $30 on Saturday.
