DuQuoin State Fairgoers get the unique opportunity of an added day of motor sport activity on the "Magic Mile" as the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series returns to the beautiful DuQuoin State Fairgrounds for the 5th Best Western-DuQuoin 30 on Sunday, August 24 along with the second appearance of the Crate Late Models, this time under United Midwestern Promoters sanction.

Brian Rowe won the first Best Western-DuQuoin 30 under the new lights on the 'Magic Mile" in 2003 and unfortunately the 2004 and 2005 races fell victim to rain. Nick Gullatta of Cleveland, Ohio led the last thirty circuits of the 2006 event after setting fast time and chasing John Kasmierski for the first ten circuits. Gullatta is currently second in the 2008 Lincoln Welders point chase (prior to Springfield) and won the Best Western challenge for the trucks at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on Saturday August 16,.

2006 ARCA Truck champ Paul Hahn of Canton, Michigan leads the 2008 title
chase in a quest for his second championship. Third through tenth in the
2008 ARCA point chase are Steve Christman of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mike Young of Toledo, Ohio, Norm Weaver of Clarksburg, West Virginia, Robbin Slaughter of Grove City, Ohio, Bill Withers of Columbus, Ohio, Ash Hawkins of Canfield, Ohio, Duane Bischoff of St. Leon, Indiana and Tim Schafer of Canfield, Ohio. Slaughter and Withers are two time ARCA Truck champions while Christman has raced on the Springfield Mile in modified stock car competition. Weaver scored an emotional win in the ARCA truck race held at Springfield in 2006. Thirty-two drivers have participated in the 2008 ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series which has 15 races on the slate.

Joining the trucks on the "Magic Mile" will be the UMP Pro (Crate) Late Models, late model stock cars driven on local race tracks by area stars.
Utilizing engines supplied by mostly by General Motors, the power plants meet certain criteria and are sealed at the factory that does not allow for upgrades or tampering by the crews. The 'crate' racing concept is one that is quickly growing in various sanctioning bodies and regions throughout the U.S.

Ken Schrader went on to post his first ever victory on the "Magic Mile: when he won the 2006 20-mile crate late model event, an event delayed one week by rain. The rain delay allowed Schrader to sweep Labor Day at DuQuoin in 2006, as he won the ARCA Federated-Southern Illinois 100 as well.

A number of local race tracks race the crate late models as part of their weekly show, including Paducah International Raceway, I57-64 Speedway in Mt. Vernon and Clay County Speedway in Flora. Several drivers from these tracks and many others are expected to try and tackle the "Magic Mile".
Paducah's Tait Davenport leads the national UMP Pro (crate) Late Model standings, with Aaron and Daniel Heck of Mt Vernon 10th and 11th, Benton's Shane Cockrum 17th and Scott Britton of Thompsonville 19th at the present time. At the present time gates are slated to open at 9 a.m. on August 24 with racing tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 (kids $5) and can be obtained at the DuQuoin State Fair Box Office, Ticketmaster or by calling 217-764-3200.
