Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (May 19, 2014) - Jamie Ball recorded his fourth top 10 of the season last Saturday at Knoxville Raceway for White Lightning Motorsports.
The night started off with Ball qualifying fourth quickest in the 360ci class, which was his best of the season around the half-mile oval.
"This past weekend's field of 360s was the toughest competition of the year with Brian Brown, Wayne Johnson and Jack Dover competing," he said. "So it was a real confidence booster to out-time those three."
That lined Ball up fifth in his heat race. After losing a spot on the initial start, he used the bottom groove to power to a third-place result to lock himself into the feature. Based on his qualifying result, Ball advanced into the feature redraw and he pulled the No. 4 in the random redraw to line up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
"The track was pretty slick and wide for the main," he said. "I got a terrible start and made contact with (Joe) Beaver in turns one and two. I missed the bottom off turn two and it was a three-way drag race into turn three with (Justin) Henderson and Dover."
Ball nearly got upside down as he clipped the berm prior to the yellow flag waving.
"The yellow really saved me and gave me another chance to get a much better start," he said. "I restarted fourth and had a decent start to come off turn two in third place. I was hanging with the top two until the Lap 4 caution. From then on it was a struggle. My car was extremely tight on exit and I battled that all night."
Ball ended with an eighth-place finish, which propelled him to fifth in the Knoxville Raceway championship standings.
"Overall it was a decent night," he said. "We just need to make a few minor adjustments when the track slicks off."
In 410ci action, Larry Ball Jr. qualified 23[sup]rd[/sup] quickest, which put him on the pole of a heat race for White Lightning Motorsports.
"It wasn't the result he was looking for, but being able to start at the front of a heat is always a plus as it makes transferring directly to the A Main much easier," Jamie Ball said.
Ball Jr. ended with at third-place finish in his heat race to lock into the main event, which he started on the inside of the 10[sup]th[/sup] row.
"Making the A Main is half the battle with the level of competition here at Knoxville this season," Jamie Ball said. "Larry has been making some major adjustments to the car and trying new things and the learning trend here seems to be what not to do. This season is proving to be a challenge in the 410 class."
Ball Jr. exited the race early and was credited with a 24[sup]th[/sup]-place finish.
White Lightning Motorsports will return to Knoxville Raceway this Saturday. Additionally, Ball is flying to North Carolina for the inaugural SPEED SPORT Challenge on Wednesday at Millbridge Speedway in Salisbury, N.C. The winged outlaw kart race featuring a variety of top-notch drivers is being taped for a delayed television broadcast on MAVTV.
