Barber, Lucas, Wilson, and Mattingly Honored as 2003 Bluegrass Speedway Champs

Bardstown, KY-November 16- Bluegrass Speedway track promoters David and Anita Ferrell honored the best of the best at Bluegrass Speedway in 2003 with their annual Championship Banquet on Sunday, November 16.



Bryan Barber of Buffalo, KY is the 2003 Hoosier Tire Late Model track champion as the third generation chauffer drove Ronnie Underwood’s MasterSbilt Race Car entry to three feature wins during the season on his way to capturing his first ever track championship. Barber also finished second in the AMS Race Engines Late Model Dash Series and also captured two Swafford Racing Graphics fast time awards. Defending Late Model track champion Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY finished second in Late Model points, having tallied five feature wins and also taking the AMS Race Engines Late Model Dash Series title. Bob Lanter of Cincinnati, OH took third place honors in the final points and scored more Swafford Racing Graphics fast time awards than anyone with four. Whitney McQueary of Dunnville, KY placed fourth in the final points after tallying two feature wins on the season and two Swafford Racing Graphics fast time awards. Joey Daniel of Liberty, KY, the 2001 Late Model track champion, completed the top five in Hoosier Tire Late Model points. The remainder of the top ten in Hoosier Tire Late Model points were Ed Behn of Salvisa, KY and Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY(both tied for sixth), Joey Kramer of Hanover, IN, Jeff Watson of Campbellsville, KY, and Terry Linville of Lancaster, KY. The Late Models also had a Dash Series sponsored by AMS Race Engines and that was won by Brad Neat, followed by Bryan Barber, Bob Lanter, Joey Daniel, Joey Kramer, and Whitney McQueary. The Brahm Trucking/Joe Porter Enterprises Late Model Rookie of the Year Award was won by Joey Kramer over Terry Linville and Jeff Bischoff. There were 10 different Late Model feature winners at Bluegrass in 2003, with MasterSbilt Race Cars winning 11 feature events and Cornett Race Engines powering the way to 10 feature race wins.



Josh Lucas of Bardstown, KY is the 2003 Hoosier Tire Modified track champion as he piloted the Gerald and Rita Lucas owned Lightning Chassis mount to five feature wins at Bluegrass Speedway in 2003. It was the second track championship for the second generation racer at Bluegrass, as he also captured the 1999 Modified track title and Lucas also totaled more points than any driver in any division at Bluegrass Speedway in 2003, as he only finished out of the top five one time during the points campaign at Bluegrass this season. Defending Modified track champion Benji Lee of Raywick, KY claimed runner-up honors in 2003 as this second generation driver totaled seven Hoosier Tire Modified feature wins for the 2003 season. Second generation pilot Joe Mattingly of New Hope, KY would take third in overall Modified points, as the 2000 and 2001 Modified track champion also nabbed one feature win during the season as well. Last year’s top Modified rookie, Joe Gray of Cecilia, KY, would break through with three feature wins on his way to claiming fourth in the final Hoosier Tire Modified points tally. Completing the top five in Modified points was yet another second generation young gun as Jason Wheatley of Raywick, KY became stronger and stronger each week. The remainder of the top ten in Hoosier Tire Modified track points were Dion Benningfield of Lebanon, KY, Robbie Gullion of Charlestown, IN, Sidney Sprague of Lexington, KY, Billy Despain of Campbellsville, KY, and Jerry Rutherford of Lawrenceburg, KY. Adam Gootee of Lebanon, KY was the 2003 Joe Porter Enterprises/Paula’s Performance Modified Rookie of the Year and was followed in the rookie points chase by Robbie Turner and Roy Herring. Bandit Race Cars won thirteen feature races at Bluegrass in 2003, with Steve Hughes Race Engines powering the way to seven feature wins for the season.



Bo Wilson of Bloomfield, KY returned to the racing scene after a two year absence and captured the 2003 Sportsman track championship and would become the first four time track champion in any class at Bluegrass Speedway, also capturing track titles in 1996, 1997, and 1998 in the Sportsman division, capturing three feature wins in the class for the season. Johnny Lee of Raywick, KY was take runner-up honors in the Sportsman class as this second generation shoe scored four feature wins after leading the points in the Sportsman class for most of the second half of the season. Defending Sportsman track champion Robert Cocanougher of Salvisa, KY placed third in the final points and picked one feature win along the way during the season. Barry Chesser of Chaplin, KY finished fourth in points and grabbed four feature checkered flags during the 2003 season. Completing the top five in Sportsman points was Kevin Wilson of Versailles, KY, as the brother of the Sportsman track champion took two feature wins for the season. Rounding the top ten in Sportsman points were Rocky Wilson of Hodgenville, KY, Darrell Gaddis of Junction City, KY, Kelly Riggs of Hodgenville, KY, Timmy Glazer of New Haven, KY, and Jimmy Bryan of New Haven, KY.



Bobby Mattingly of Louisville, KY captured his second consecutive Street Stock track championship as the winningest driver in the history of the Street Stock division scored five feature wins on the way to his second straight class championship. Trailing Mattingly in the final Street Stock points would be Dan Bryan of Bloomfield, KY who would score four feature wins on his way to taking runner-up honors. Third would go to Willie Edelen of Bardstown, KY, who grabbed one feature win during the season. Cotton Mattingly was again a mark of consistency as the Bardstown, KY driver finished fourth in the final points. Rounding out the top five in Street Stock points was Johnny Cecil of Loretto, KY, who notched two feature race wins during the season. The rest of the top ten in Street Stock track points would be Jaime Downs of Lebanon, KY, Terry Bartley of Bardstown, KY, Daroyl Samples of Shepherdsville, KY, Michael Coontz of Hustonville, KY, and Brian McCubbins of Bardstown, KY.
