Bluegrass Speedway Set For 22nd Annual Dirt Track World Championship This Weekend

Bardstown, KY- The time, work, and preparation is just about complete as Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown is set to host the 22nd edition of the tradition-rich Dirt Late Model Championship event. The race, which is the third richest paying to win event in America for Dirt Late Models, will go off this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20.



The Late Model feature on Sunday afternoon will be 100 laps and pay the winner $50,000 for their efforts. The Modified division will also be in action during the weekend, with their feature on Sunday paying $2,000 to win. The total purse for the weekend of activities will be in excess of $160,000.



The Late Model division has 94 pre-entries leading into the event. Leading the list of those pre-entered is five-time DTWC winner Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN. Other previous winners of the DTWC that are also pre-entered include two-time DTWC champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AK, along with fellow Batesville resident Wendell Wallace. Among other drivers entered is 2002 Dream winner and UMP Summernationals champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, who has yet to grab a win in this prestigious event. Also entered is 2002 STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series champion Eddie Carrier, Jr. of Leburn, KY. Another entry is 2002 UMP Modified national champion Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN, as the open wheel ace races with front fenders for the weekend, along with the 2K2 UMP Late Model national champion Terry English of Benton, KY. Among other touring drivers pre-entered in the event include Jackie Boggs of Grayson, KY, Rodney Combs of Ft. Myers, FL, Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, WI, David Smith of Inman, SC, Eldora Million runner-up Steve Smith of Powell, TN, Steve Russell of Ponotoc, MS, former NASCAR Winston Racing Series national champion Gary Webb of Blue Grass, IA, Randle Chupp of Troutman, NC, Derreck Rainey of Powder Springs, GA, and Rodney Martin of Cartersville, GA. Among those drivers entered that have previous wins at Bluegrass Speedway in 2002 are Whitney McQueary of Dunnville, KY, Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN, Timmy Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY, Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY, Bob Pierce of Oakwood, IL, 2002 Bluegrass Speedway Late Model track champion Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY, and John Gill of Mitchell, IN.



The weekend begins on Friday morning, October 18, at 9:00 when Bluegrass Speedway track officials will open the pit gates and start parking tow rigs in the pit area. Fans will also be allowed to enter the grandstand area at 9:00 as well on Friday morning to mark off seats for the weekend. Then on Saturday, October 19, gates will open at 9:00 a.m., with hot laps set to begin at Noon. The remainder of Saturday’s events will consist of time trials for the Late Models and Modifieds, plus qualifying heat races in both divisions. Saturday’s festivities will conclude with a pig roast and live band behind the grandstand area. The weekend will culminate on Sunday, October 20, as gates will open again at 9:00, with action set to get underway around 1:00 p.m. with last chance races for both the Late Models and Modifieds, followed by the 100 lap Late Model Dirt Track World Championship, with the $2,000 to win Modified feature completing the weekend.
