Meridian, Mississippi (10/24/10) Brian Birkhofer had only been to Whynot Motorsports Park once before this weekend, and that appearance came in 2008, when he lapped all but the top five competitors as he claimed his first Fall Classic title. Even though he would not find the going as easy, Birkhofer made a triumphant return in 2010 as he claimed the $15,000 winner’s check in the 16th Annual Coors Light Fall Classic at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Mississippi on Saturday night in front of a record crowd.

The 16th Annual Coors Light Fall Classic drew a total turnout of 220 race cars including 60 Super Late Models, representing 17 states. In Cliburn Performance qualifying on Friday night, Jack Sullivan from Greenbrier, Arkansas topped the star-studded field to set fast time overall around the 1/3 mile oval.

Via heat race action, Chris Wall from Springfield, Louisiana and Mike Marlar from Winfield, Tennessee claimed the front row starting spots for Saturday night’s finale. At the drop of the green flag Marlar jumped to a commanding advantage with Chris Wall and teammate, Don O’Neal, racing wheel to wheel for the second spot. By lap 14, O’Neal broke free of Wall and set his sights on Marlar. Three laps later Brian Birkhofer would move past Wall for the second position.

O’Neal would pursue Marlar for the next few laps before taking over the top spot on lap 25. O’Neal would maintain the lead for the next several laps as furious battles for position raged behind him, but on lap 42 Chris Wall would use a lightning move on the cushion to take over control of the top spot as a few laps later Birkhofer moved into the second position. Birkhofer would stalk Wall until lap 62, when he moved into the lead. Birkhofer would fend off various advances from Wall, O’Neal, and Marlar for the next few laps before he began to extend his advantage as Billy Moyer moved to second.

A late race caution set up a dash to the checkers, but Birkhofer would prove to be too much to handle as he claimed the $15,000 win ahead of Billy Moyer, Chris Wall, Mike Marlar, Dale McDowell.

Jimmy Mars from Menomonie, Wisconsin earned the Hard Charger Award after advancing from his 17th starting spot to a 6th place finish.

In the M-D Metals Crate Late Model division, a talented field of 38 cars entered the event, which saw Chase Washington and Jamie Tollison start on the front row for the $2,000 to win event. Tollison would prove to be too much for the competition as he charged to the biggest win of his career ahead of Chris Ragan, Chase Washington, Chip Brindle, and Jim McDuffie.

The LSI Open Wheel Modified division saw an impressive field of 38 entries from across the southeast enter the $2,500 to win program. For the feature it was Nettleton, Mississippi driver, Randol Harlow, who earned the pole position as he was joined by Greg Hopkins from Molino, Florida on the front row. The race would see hard racing throughout the pack, but at the checkered flag it was Hopkins, who picked up the big win over Jamie Burford, Noah Daspit, Randol Harlow, and Greg Hollingsworth.

In the Street Stock division 51 ground pounders were on hand to contend for the $1,000 top prize. Coker, Alabama’s Trey Bright, who was the defending Coors Light Fall Classic Champion, in the Street Stock division, quickly worked his way past front row starters Jerry Idom and Artis Bunyard to claim the big win. He was followed at the stripe by Trey Bright, Artis Bunyard, Jerry Idom, Tony Silvestri, and James Elfring.

The Kajun Mini Stock feature, which boasted a $1,000 first prize saw 23 cars in action, and it was 16th starting Elvis Turberville, who overtook Jared Neiswander late in the race to claim the big win. Following the top two finishers at the checkered flag were Benny Pickett, J.C. Pearson, and Wayne Everette.

Friday night’s Pure Stock feature was won by Kyle Mars over Tim Dees, and Brandon Leftwich, while Saturday night’s Stinger feature was topped by Chris Hagler with Brandon Leftwich and Mindi Sisson rounding out the podium.

Rodney Wing, Charles Thrash, and Jannie Thrash would like to thank all of the racers, sponsors and fans, who made the 16th Annual Coors Light Fall Classic the most successful in the history of the event and the facility. Stay tuned to www.WhynotMotorsportsPark.com for big announcements for 2011.
