Farmington, MO (September 18) – Championship Night at St Francois County Raceway provided action and drama. A good crowd and Boo’s Market and Grill of Potosi witnessed great action and some drama as the night unfolded. Two Divisional crowns had already been decided, but two remained to be crowned. Chris Boyd in the Pure Street Division and Kenny Harris in the B-Modified Division had already clinched their Championship coming into the night. Jimmy Hurley, Springfield, IL had some work to do in the Sprint Division. Hurley started the night out 20 points ahead of second place, Joey Montgomery and A-Modified Division was closer as Brent Thompson entered the night only 6 markers ahead of Billy Smith.

In preparation for next weekends Queens Royale, qualifications were in order. Keith Burch, Farmington, MO qualified in the second position, finished third in his heat, won the dash and claimed his first feature win of the season in style. The feature had its problems in getting started and ended up going to a single file start. Burch, Tommy Worley, Jr would take the field in turn one on the start. Burch was building his lead quickly, but a red flag came out as point chaser Joey Montgomery made contact with another driver and flipped his mount on the back straight. His heavily damaged race car was taken to the pit and his chase was finished. This opened the door for Hurley to claim the Championship for 2010. Hurley, however, had his issues as well. Although he qualified third in the order, during his heat mechanical trouble set in. So he went to a back-up car and had to make the feature by going through the B-Main. He finished second in that race and started the A-Main very deep in the field. From his sixteenth starting spot he managed only a fifteenth place finish, but with Montgomery already out the Championship was his for 2010. Burch continued to run away from the field. Catching traffic and working it well, he managed to hold off a hard charging Tommy Worley, Jr at the finish. Rounding out the top five are Joey Boyd, Kory Bales with a very nice run for fourth and Rod Carbdree in fifth. Do to impending weather no post race interview was held, but at intermission we spoke to Burch and told him he was very fast. In response he said they are going to be faster and they were.

Two drivers came to town like gunslingers in the old west. Billy Smith and Brent Thompson had come to let it all hang out for the Championship. Smith had command of the season for the most part. This chase should not have been this close. Smith had several DNF’s through the season and still managed to put himself in position for the Modified crown. Thompson on the other hand had his issues as well, but kept plugging away. Last week after Smith had a no finish and scored in the eleventh spot, Thompson took the win and the lead going into Saturday night. With only 6 point separating the two a tie could have also been in order. If that had occurred, Smith would have been the Champion based on feature wins. He told us at intermission as well that nothing would be left on the table. The statement was true as he ran the high line and Thompson ran the bottom. Brent could get along side, but could not quite get around so he finished second and took the championship by two points. This is unofficial until the points are audited before final posting. During his interview, Smith thanked his sponsors and told the crowd that even though the Championship is over, next weekends Modified Mania was going to be his and the big payoff that goes with it. Finishing third Jeremy Greenwalt hangs on to the third spot in points. Fourth place goes to Mike Francis with another strong run and Brian Worley bring home his car in fifth place.

The B-Modified Division as mentioned found Kenny Harris at the top of the points and the Championship. Michael Savage won the feature for his seventh of the season and was runner-up in the points. These two also kept it close for most of the season, until a couple of bad night took Savage out of the hunt. Although he finished second in the points, Savage had a good season. Having no experience in this type of car, he found everything but the track on opening night and progressively got better as the season wore on. Harris, a seasoned veteran with over 100 career feature wins, told us early on Mike will win several races. Savage took control early in the event and survived a couple of cautions for the win. Eddie Gross takes runner-up honors followed by Shane Blair in third, Kenny Harris in fourth and Randy Forster in fifth.

Jimmy Farris has hit on the combination late in the season as he picked up his fourth win in a row. Jimmy would start on front row outside of Kenny Kennedy. Kennedy was driving the car of Dave Wofford. Not sure if it is his car or Dave’s, none the less it was fast. Kennedy would lead into turn one, only to be overtaken by Farris. Josh Johnston brought out a early caution as he found himself in a spinning mode. Farris survived several more cautions including one he himself was involved. The ruling was that the second place car had intentionally taken him out so he retained his top spot and motored away for the win. Dusty Homan had his best run of the season for a second place finish. Driving it home in third was Charlie Savage. After a runner-up finish a week ago, Robbie Williams takes another top five finish in fourth, and 2010 Champion Chris Boyd completes the top five.

Next Saturday evening will the final night barring rain for 2010. The Annual Queens Royale and Modified Mania will be the headliners for the Sprints and the A-Modifieds. Tommy Worley, Jr will be looking to defend his Queens victory from a year ago and will have stiff competition as drivers who compete locally and some of the “invaders” will try to come in and steal the cash. Past Winners of this event, which started in 1995. Kelly Kinser won the 1st Queens in 1995, he also won it in 1998 and for the third time in 2001. Another three time winner Joey Montgomery, 2003, 2007, and 2008 will be looking to add the fourth jewel to his crown. Two time winners include Tim Montgomery, 2002 and 2005. Danny Smith is also a two time winner in 1996 and 2000. Single time winners include Danny Lasoski in 1996. Local favorite Lee Dunn in 1997 and Shane Stewart in 2004. Modified Mania will have its third running in 2010 and Past Winners Billy Smith and Brent Thompson will once again do battle for top honors. Gates open at 4:00, hot laps around 6:00. This will be followed by Sprint Qualifying and racing to follow. All Classes will be in competition on this night
